Spent $140 on a pea coat. Upon the first wearing, I discovered that there were holes in both slash pockets. When I tried to exchange it t he woman working the register (one of the owners I believe) told me it was too strange to have holes in both pockets and she wouldn't take it back. I agreed it was strange to purchase ostensibly new but damaged merchandise and that's why I wanted to exchange the coat. She told me I could have the holes repaired ""for a couple of dollars."" I told her H & H and I wouldn't be doing business anymore. Unless you want to get stuck with faulty merchandise, you shouldn't, either. more

I used to avoid this store because of the attitudes, too. But, when it comes down to wanting something you can't find elsewhere, you go, expecting a bit of an ordeal. About a year ago, I was getting ready for a long camping trip and found that I needed to replace a broken tarp pole and didn't have time to order one online.\r \r In I went, looking for the owner (the guy who is always behind the register). Check. His son who I remember being even more rude than his father. Nope - not there. Going downstairs I was surprised to see the same guy I saw the last time I was there - probably 5 years before. He pointed me straight to where the poles were. The first happy surprise - they were $10 cheaper than anywhere else. Went upstairs to pay for it and (again) expecting some rudeness, I got my second surprise. The owner actually made a bit of small talk as he rung me up. Nothing major - but a far cry from being rude.\r \r I've since been back a few times and haven't encountered any kind of hostility from anyone in the store. And I don't see the son anymore so maybe that was the root cause of all the problems. Who knows? To sum it up, if you remember and liked the old Sunny Surplus before they shot themselves in the head by going preppy, you should check out this place. Upstairs is mostly packaged retail stuff, downstairs is a browser's dream. more

This is a surplus store. They buy and sell from ex-military and closeouts. If you don't know what you want this is not the place to go window shopping. If you know what you want it is a good-to-great place for getting very fair deals on 'Surplus' items. It you want anything else stick to Craig's List or E-mail or the malls. They don't need your business and it shows. Wear fatigues and a hunter's cap and you'll get better service.\r \r I'm glad that they are here. And - like a flea market- inspect your purchase or don't complain - it's not K-Mart.\r \r Ron G. more

The First time I went in... I was shopping for my sons birthday party... I walked to back of store looking around ...... I found a room that was not blocked off.. full of sweaters. Suddenly, this older man is yelling.. ""what are you doing"" and ""why are you in this room"" ""what is wrong with you""\r I was so shaken.... saying back to him... I was sorry and did not know ....\r \r AS i walked to front of store I began to cry...I was so distraught ... The woman and gentleman apologized at front of store... I was saying who was He? and is He ill?\r \r Today, I went back... and the same older man was there.... HE yelled at me again for looking at things... Then, yelled at my son.. saying what kind of child are you? How were you raised? and on and on... I began to yell back... \r OH---- it is YOU!!!!!!\r ------- last time I was here YOU made me cry. \r This time... I am aware you are mentally ill!!!\r I suggest you not speak to my son that way! Boy what an argument!!!!\r \r I want to call the police. do i have grounds? more

Prior to visiting the store, I had read quite a few negative reviews on the various H & H Outdoors websites. In spite of the negativity of the websites, I decide to give them a try anyway and BOY! WAS I PLEASANTLY SURPRISED! There were four gentlemen working at the time I visited; two on the first floor and two downstairs. All four treated me with the UTMOST respect. I was looking for a pea coat for my daughter who is very petite in size. Although they didn t have her size in stock; they offered to order one for me from the manufacturer. They placed my order on Monday afternoon and on Saturday morning I received a call from a member of the H & H staff that the coat was in and I could come and pick it up. I received GREAT customer service and would have missed out on a very pleasant shopping experience and a great quality product if I had paid attention to the negative reviews. more

Steer Clear! Not worth the trip... 3/22/2012

Dirty, smelly store with smelly, low-quality goods. Store employees and the OWNERS were rude and hostile to several customers. The mood was so bad I took my business else wear and I wouldn't go back if they were giving away merchandise FREE.... My visit was disturbing to say the least... more

No return policy for damaged goods 11/29/2011

My brother purchased a $100 backpack from this store yesterday. Today he noticed that one of the straps was already ripping. He went back to the store WITH HIS RECEIPT so that he could exchange it for another one. The store owner refused to give him a refund or exchange. He told my brother to bring it to a shoe repair shop and they could fix it for him. Needless to say, my brother and I will never buy anything from this store again. Buyer beware! You may have the same experience if you buy something from this store! more

Racist owners, horrible service - STAY AWAY!!! 9/21/2011

I am a professional, working in downtown Baltimore. My wife and I visited this store to buy heavy-duty winter coats for me and my two sons. The owner, who happened to be working the register at the time not only cursed at the two black gentlemen making purchases before me, but turned on me and my wife! I left my intended purchases at the counter and we left the store. These people were on the edge of violence towards their customers, and calling them rude. Would be an understatement. A terrible experience and I vowed never to return! Stay Away!! more

One winter, they had a type & size thermal underwear nobody else in town had. Stayed warm & comfy that year. Another time I bought a pocket knife and it took a while because of their big selection. No one rushed me or lost patience and I ended up with a great knife. more

WORST STORE EVER -- DON'T EXPECT FAIR SERVICE 12/27/2010

Bought a Leatherman tool there and it was broken in the packaging. The extremely rude owner/manager would not return the item then hung up on me with no explanation. I have been shopping there since I was a young girl and won't return ever again. more
