Love the atmosphere 3/31/2011

Nice, high end establishment. Food and service pretty good, as expected for the price range. Worth a visit. more

Good food 3/19/2010

Best in dining and steaks in my opinon !! Pros: Great Service more

Bad Service and Worse Food 3/11/2010

The wait staff was totally incompetent and several errors were made on our order. Our waiter could not make a recommendation to save his life. The food itself was way over priced and mediocre at best. We ordered several rolls and one of the ""chef specials"". My wife made the comment that it was the worst sushi she had ever eaten and that the pre-packaged stuff at the HEB grocery store was better. I have to agree with her assessment. We would not recommend this place to anybody!! Pros: Seating Area was well decorated Cons: Slow service, mediocre food, indifferent staff more

Love the Sushi! 12/10/2009

The sushi was the best I've had in Austin so far. I loved the ""Finn"". It was fresh and uniquely prepared. Daily specials are offered and several at the table raved about the filet stuffed with crab meat. Great spot for a special evening or for a business dinner--I might have to just grab sushi at the sushi bar on my next visit. Pros: Great Food, Good Service, Nice Atmosphere more

Wonderful seafood experience 11/24/2009

We went on a night that was quite busy and our meal took a while to arrive. Our waitress was very helpful and even brought us something extra for our troubles. We will visit again. Pros: Delicious food, great service Cons: kitchen was a little slow more

Great place 10/16/2009

Great service staff. We had dinner in one of the new private dining rooms (table of ten, highly suggest securing the ""small PDR"" for a group this size, our waiter Doug was fantastic. Both the General Manager Jason and the Chef Ryan visited our table. We opted for the sushi platter as a starter and then I chose the roasted duck breat as my entree. While the food was exceptional, I found the wine list diverse with many great wines by the glass. My wife and I chose an Albarino at the staff's suggestion and it was absolutely delightful. (without breaking the bank). Highly recommend and we'll be back! Pros: Great food with approachable wine list more

love This Place! 7/13/2009

This restaurant is always a great experience! They have wonderful Salmon, & the sushi is excellent! The 1/2 price sushi happy hour is worth a visit! The atmosphere is elegant but not stuffy. This is my first choice for a nice dinner with friends or my husband in downtown Austin! Pros: Great Sushi!!!!! more

Amazing Dinner & Excellent Service! 6/22/2009

We went in with a group of 12 total for a nice dinner. We were seated in the semi private dining room and taken care of very well. Our servers were polite, attentive, & truly concerned about our comfort. Our group sampled everything from the calamari, to sushi, to the Trio-of steak, lobster & a crab cake! It was AMAZING. My hawaiin mahi mahi was fresh and perfectly prepared. Everything was exactly as I would expect from a fine dining establishment. I look forward to my next meal at Finn & Porter. Thanks to everyone for a wonderful evening. Pros: beautiful semi-private dining room, amazing staff! Cons: None... more

awful dining experience from beginning to end 6/19/2009

Wow!! What a mistake! My husband and I came here based on the decent reviews and couldn't have been more dissapointed. The waitstaff was unknowledgable, sloppy, and slow. The waiter knew nothing about wine and brought our drinks out 15 minutes after our dinner. My husband's dish was cold and had old mussells in it and mine had to be sent back because it was so off!! All in all a really bad experience for a fine dining establishment. There are so many other fantastic places in Austin. Don't waste your time or the hefty valet parking fee!!! :o( Cons: cheesy atmosphere, sloppy waiters, bad food more

Yummmmmmm 6/19/2009

Had a great dinner at Finn & Porter the other night. We had a party of 8 and they were able to put us in a private dining area which was really nice. The waitstaff was very accomodating and the service was top notch. They had some sushi happy hour specials so the prices weren't bad at all. We got some calamari - big portion - for $5. This is a great restaurant for a group of people and the atmosphere is very nice. You forget that it's inside the Hilton. more

Overrated 5/6/2009

I took my wife and daughter there for my daughter's birthday. We were seated around six, and the light shining through the windows was so bright that it blinded us. We had to move to another table. The sushi rolls were good, but the steak was overcooked and tough. Our waiter was a nice enough guy, but he was sloppily dressed and slow. The noise from the bar upstairs was very loud, too. Not worth 200$. Next time, I'll go to ALC. Pros: Sushi rolls Cons: steak overcooked more

Great Steaks! 2/11/2009

We had a wonderful dinner here on a Monday night. We were actually staying at the hotel and I went on line to find a recommendation for a good steak in Austin..I was surprised to find Finn and Porter and all the wonderful reviews given here. It was a wonderful experience. Recently renovated and beautiful it has wonderful ambiance. Jason the manager made sure we had the most wonderful dining experience. Our server was equally greatl and the food was out of this world. My daughter and husband had the bone-in rib eye and said it was fabulous. I had the Finn and Porter trio and every bite was delicious. The crab cake was the best I have ever had! This is a wonderful place for a group or a romantic dinner. You will not be treated better anywhere else! Pros: Food and service more

Fantastic! 10/19/2008

For my Dad's retirement party dinner we wanted a restaurant that would provide not only a wonderful ambience, but outstanding food and service as well. Finn & Porters was the perfect choice! The manager (John) was helpful, knowledgeable and made us feel right at home. The food was fantastic. The crab cakes, sushi, and oysters were perfect. My halibut had an unepxected zing and flavor. Our steaks, and stuffed chicken were amazing. The wine options were outstanding. Every detail was taken into consideration by the staff and kitchen - and every course was worth the wait. The restaurant can be a little noisy thanks to the acoustics, but its well worth it. The menu is reasonably priced, the food and wine pairings are wonderful, and the staff is attentive and helpful. This is definitely a place worth putting on your favorites or must visit list! Pros: Food, Wine, Ambience, Service Cons: Parking, Construction on nearby streets more

A Fantastic Experience and a Hidden Gem! 7/28/2008

We've been hitting different Austin restaurants for some time now, but we had never heard of Finn & Porter before. We were hearing some wonderful things, so we decided to give it a try. What an incredible experience. We weren't sure what to expect with it being a hotel restaurant, but when we arrived, it felt like anything but. All the food we had (sushi better than Uchi!) Griddle Corn Cakes with Lobster, Scallops with some kind of Cauliflower Puree, Seabass with Creamed Corn and Port Cherries and the Steak? . . . The best I've ever had! The food all had memorable flavors and balance. We had to try the Chocolate Truffle Donuts for dessert, what an ending! Our server, Jacob seemed to know exactly what we needed before we could even give him a hint. John the manager helped us explore some new wine flavors and really made us feel welcome. He was everywhere in the dining room. The most impressive thing about our dinner here was that we truly felt that everyone we interacted with was GENUINE about seeing us and other guests enjoying their dinner. The prices were rather reasonable for the menu and wines, but the experience you got for your money is what stood out. I don't know how we hadn't heard about this sooner. We'll definitely be back!! Pros: Complete dining experience, quality of food, genuine staff Cons: make sure you validate parking more

Great service 4/19/2008

I do not really recommend this restaurant for someone who is looking for a mouth-watering, once-in-a-lifetime-to-taste, delicious meal. The fish is very bland. And the steaks, or the one I ordered, are/ was very overcooked. The soup is delicious, though. It is full of flavor. The calamari is exquisite. Probably the only thing I enjoyed the most. But, it has a very high class atmosphere. I wouldn't really go there again. It is more like a go-once-never-again. Pros: Atmosphere, service, calamari, soup Cons: steaks, seafood more

Best customer service 7/25/2007

My financee and I visited Austin (her hometown) from Atlanta (my hometown) this weekend. We were recently engaged, and I wanted to take her somewhere nice in Austin to celebrate, and I found Finn & Porter on Citysearch. The restaurant has a great look and feel, and the server was very cordial. Our food, however, wasn't very good, which is why I considered writing a bad review. HOWEVER, the reason the restaurant redeemed itself is because of the excellent customer service we received. After we complained that the steaks were too salty (they were mistakenly double seasoned, the manager later told us), the server and manager both apologized and took the steaks off of our tab. We also received complimentary champagne and dessert so in essence, we got a lot for a little. I won't remember the restaurant for its salty steaks but instead will remember it for the top rate customer service we received. I know that the salty steak experience was an isolated incident, and the next time I go to Austin, I'd still consider going back. more

Good dining experience 1/8/2007

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Finn & Porter this past weekend. We had the Pan Seared Foie Gras (slightly overcooked in a couple of the areas) and the Ceasar Salad (a little on the salty side) for starters. He ordered the Tasmanian King Salmon (excellent dish!!) and I ordered the Filet of Ribeye (I don't like mashed potatoes, but their mashed potatoes are the best ever!). We also ended the evening with the Sorbet for dessert (The grapefruit and Guava flavor were tasty!! The Ginger-Lime had too much ginger for my tastebuds). The presentation of each dish was absolutely beautiful and we even had a couple of free samples. Not everything was perfect for the price, but we were overall content with the food. The service was good, but it could've been a bit better. For example, if some of the desserts take longer to create, then they should've mentioned that as we were halfway through our main course instead of mentioning it after our plates were cleared. Also, we made reservations, but the Hostess did not see that reservation. Luckily, it was not that busy and we were able to get a table. I hope they see this review and make small changes to perfect the place for the price! I still would recommend this place. =) Cons: Service could be improved to perfection for the price more

Very Upscale Atmosphere 1/2/2007

This is my first review and I'd like to first mention that the dollar range given is off by about $10 it is more in the $$$$ range. I mean who goes out for a fancy meal and doesn't enjoy something extra like wine, an appetizer, dessert or something. Pros: ambience, service Cons: price, cold more

Fantastic Dining Experience 6/28/2006

We went on a whim (decided at 7:30) on a Saturday nite - called up, got a reservation at 9pm. Got to the bar about 8:15 and first off were blown away by the decor. It was much nicer than we were expecting. The bartender (Heath) was very friendly, accomodating and provided great service. My girlfriend and I both commented that we'd love to return some night and just chill at the bar - or even eat at the bar, as another couple were doing. Pros: THE FOOD, friendly and ATTENTIVE service, atmosphere - and did we mention the FOOD? Cons: Only thing I can think of is that this is an upscale resaurant, therefore somewhat expensive, but you can't expect to eat a fine meal for less - and for what we got more
