Always a good time at Fat Cat Billiards 10/17/2011

Billiard, shuffleboard, ping pong, scrabble, chess + cheap beer and wine. Just one of those places where you need to go to at least once in your life. more

Great date night location! 11/10/2009

Fat Cat is so much fun! I love going here with my friends or on a date. They have pool, ping pong, shuffleboard, and all sorts of board games, plus beer & wine. I do wish they had a full bar, though. more

Chill out 24x7 3/16/2009

This underground place depicts NYC in steroids. You get there, there is a bar that only serves beer and label-less wine, and then to your right a live jazz band, a lounge, ahead of you pool tables, then ping-pong on the back, scrabble to your left, people making out to your right, this place is just great, it's where you feel home and nobody judges you. You will meet interesting people, from the B&T that came because of this review to the local millionaire that spits on Bagatelle/1OAK, the gold diggers and the spoiled cute girls (saw many cute girls at Fat Cat, trust me). If your girl likes this place, marry her, she is good sports. Don't forget to bring a Lysol spray though... Pros: Location, friendly staff, large area, diversity, music Cons: Pretty dirty, but oh well... more

A RARE FIND FOR GREAT JAZZ IN A FUNKY GAME ROOM 2/11/2009

Fat Cat is mainly a game room. BUT you go down the stairs, pay only 3 bucks, and you go past the bar to the right, and THERE is the music. Nice comfortable sofas and chairs in a comfortable FUNKY setting, but interestingly enough, you can't hear any of the noise from the games going on in the rest of the place. You get your drinks, beer or soft drinks only, from the bar, and bring them to where you are sitting. A REALLY great find for some GREAT music and an AMAZINGLY cheap price. What a bargain!\r Some really great musicians play here and you get to sit within a few feet of the band on a comfortable couch and hang out all night. Can't beat this in NYC. Pros: GREAT MUSIC at a VERY cheap price. If you don't mind funky, this is the place to go. more

More basementy than divey... but fun for groups 2/7/2009

A ton of us shoved ourselves into a corner on a couch that looked like it had been dumpster dived. We were surrounded by other furniture that looked like all the stuff someone couldn't get rid of on eBay. The lightbulb above the table didn't work. After half an hour, I complained to the doorman who was collecting the $3 cover. An hour latter, somebody from the bar came to look at it, gave the ON switch a pull. When nothing happened he shrugged... twice... and walked away. ""Food"" was a notebook filled with take-out menus of nearby restaurants. Booze was order at the bar.\r This basement club packed with pool tables, ping pong tables, chess board tables, you name it. A CitySearch review called it Granddad's basement. I'd say that... times 10. We had a great pool game with no discernible rules. Just enjoy yourself and aim for a hole! (A good philosophy of life, I'd say!)\r It's a dive, but if you're with a lot of people, is as fun as you wanna make it. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers Pros: lots of things to do Cons: You need to do them all yourself more

One of My Favorite NYC Bars 11/4/2008

Every time I come here, I have a great time. It's open late, and the chess/checkers are definitely ridiculous for drunk people. My last time at Fat Cat, I played chess with checkers pieces and had an amazing end-of-night. A great place, overall! more

Just plain awesome! 7/25/2008

Not for the sensitive! this place is made for REAL people who REALLY want to have fun. They have everything you could want to do and all for a great price. The bartenders have great suggestions for their beers or wines. Major bummer they don't have spirits but the live jazz and over all cheap entertainment makes this one of the best hangouts in the city. The only place like it! I'm glad I found It! Also, (my favourite part about this place!) they give you a letter card when you open a tab so that only you and your guest can put things on your tab by flashing your card, makes you feel super safe about keeping an open tab. Plus the music adds to the boho feel of the place. Who is the mastermind behind this?! Pros: Music, games and atmosphere! Cons: ... more

I wish it were my living room... 3/27/2008

The fat cat is a great place to come and relax, any time of the day or night, and any day of the week. I haven't found anywhere else where you can play ping pong or fusball to live jazz, while drinking a great pint of beer (the Stones rocks - no pun intended). It's casual, completely attitude free, and just plain good fun. It's the bar equivelant of your favorite pair of jeans. Pros: Ping pong, ping pong, jazz, ping pong, ping pong. Cons: Can get very busy. more

Grunge perfection 2/19/2008

Cheap beer, dirty but plentiful pool tables, and any board came you could hope for, all with live music to keep you entertained. You might not take your mother here, but you should certainly take your friends! more

Home away from Home 2/7/2008

Something for everyone. Pool, ping pong, shuffleboard, etc. Staff is very friendly, good music, but who the hell makes a mean Manhattan? There's no hard liquor in there-just beer and wine-and the beer is on tap. Whoever said something about bottles of beer, maybe 3 years ago, but not lately. Tables need to be cleaned and leveled though. A shoutout to Mackenzie001. 8 year old girls should not get drunk. Nice try Timmy, but your horrible spelling is a dead giveaway. more

Jazzy, Hip, Affordable, and Fun 12/16/2007

Fat Cat Billiards was an amazing experience! I went there on a Sunday night, had to pay a small $3 cover, and got myself a pool table (it was either $5 or $6 an hour). Overall it was a lot of fun and most importantly affordable. Beer was $3 for PBR and $6 for all other beers. The band they had playing that night, Fat Cat Big Band was pretty impressive. Great to watch if your on a date or just hanging out with your buds. There's plenty to do. With pool, ping pong, chess, shuffle board, jazz bands, beer, etc. all in one place, you'll never get bored. Pros: Affordable, plenty options to keep you entertained and busy more

Something for everyone 1/20/2007

Don't be fooled by the divey atmophere, this place offers a great variety of classy imported bottled beers. I had no problem finding a chess partner while I waited for my friends to arrive. A unique, fun spot for a night out with a group or a casual date. Pros: chess, ping pong, drink selection Cons: It can be a bit drafty more

hello my sister whent their 12/19/2006

just you guys are great my sister went their she was drunk the door man made sure he put her in a cab and than called to tell she was ok just want thank you his name was timmy just a good guy thank you their needs to more people like you thank you fat cat and timmy two more

LaidBack For Fat Cat 11/13/2006

For music there are clubs. For drinks, there are lounges. Throw the two together and a few pool tables, you have Fat Cat. The vibe is quiet, yet chill at the same time. It may not be extraordinarily cheap, but at least it beats wandering through a crowd of people who can't stand your BO. At least you have a stick to defend yourself in this scenario. Pros: Game Variety, Atmosphere Cons: Prices, Service more

Great Place to Start the Night 11/4/2006

Meet all your friends at the Fat Cat, it's in a great location and they have alright happy hour specials. Bartenders are great and make a mean Manhattan! Get's crowded later, but it's perfect for starting out the night. Pros: Great atmosphere and alright deals for happy hour. Cons: Can get crowded later into the night and on weekends. more

always a good place for pool 10/30/2006

the place gets a very mixed crowd and i have felt safe here. a good place for meeting friends as it is close to all subways more

Swingin Salsa/Jazz Music and shootin some pool....questionable waitstaff 6/24/2006

Great place to hang with your friends (though they try to charge for people not playing sometimes).. there is a nameless bartender who likes to reply to everything you say in a truly condescending fashion and roll her eyes to everything to you ask.... but other than that, i loved the joint. Pros: great variety of games (pool, foozball, air hockey Cons: gets loud and too crowded on weekends more

Friends will get charged 10/11/2005

This is a really great place to hang out and play ping-pong. Just be aware that if you bring friends that just want to drink beer and watch, that they will try to charge your friends as if they are players. I protested this policy when I found out because it clearly says $6 per player and nothing about being charged for just watching. So, if you go, be very explicit that only a certain number of people are playing and make Fat Cat agree that that is the number that they will charge for. Their excuse for this policy is that they can't keep track of everyone once they go into the pool and ping-pong area. My response - Put up a sign that states this! Pros: Cheap drinks Cons: Sneaky Fees for Games more

All around good place 9/11/2005

Drinks don't cost much. Jazz music. If you bring a couple of friends that don't like pool or pingpong they can sit back and play checkers or chess or even scrabble. This beatnick pool hall is not pretensious. It's a good place to bring co-workers or friends with different ideas of fun. There is something for everyone. Pros: good music, not too busy, inexpensive Cons: no fuzball! more

I approve 12/16/2004

The atmosphere: nothing short marvelous. Much enjoyment to be had by all. I heard Nellie McKay (a singer/songwriter you should have heard of by now) was devasted when Small's closed and pitched in to give Fat Cat a face lift. It's looking, feeling good. more

  • In Short
This is the sort of pool hall that fables are made of--cheap and gritty and cool. There's a communal feel in the low-ceilinged, well-worn basement, in the spacious sprawl of 10...
