EST is a New York institution offering great off-off-Broadway theatre, as well as acting classes and internship opportunities. Their annual one act festival, Marathon, is great. They also produce the Sloane Festival which focuses on works related to science and technology and a host of other innovative programming. Definitely a part of the New York theater scene to support. more

Editorial
  • What It Is
This is one of the nation's premiere developers of new theatrical works. Ensemble members--including Danny DeVito, Wendy Wasserstein, Christopher Durang and Jon Voight--collaborate to bring forth 250 projects every year, ranging from readings to workshops to fully produced plays. Not every play is great, but the excitement of seeing a script performed for the first time almost always generates some electricity. Productions take place year-round, but the majority occur during the theater's two festivals, the Octoberfest in the fall and the One-Act Festival in late spring.

    The Space
There are two venues: a second-floor main stage and a studio space on the sixth floor. Both adhere to an open-seating policy, so it's prudent to arrive early; the unfortunate can wind up behind a column.
