After a long hospiatl stay, my mother re-gained her independence after therapy at Consulate Cheswick. The activities offered were plentiful and kept my mom busy on days we couldn't visit. The social service department was extremely helpful in helping my mother receive home health and meals on wheels upon her discharge Overall, Consulate = Excellence more

Ted was admitted to Consulate Health Care after experiencing a fall resulting in a cervical fracture and surgical stabilization. His mobility was limited and he had a Halo to maintain his vertabrae placement. His goal was to return home and perform his usual tasks independantly. Because he had steps outside and within his home, he was determined to ambulate with bilayteral loft stand crutches versus a walker. Through extensive PT and OT he was able to increase his upper and lower strength, along with improve his balance and endurance. Physical Therapy performed a home visit and deemed him safe to navigate in and out of his home. more

When I was admitted to the facility in 2012, I was inundated with myriad physical disabilities. I was admitted here after a three month stint at Allegheny General Hospital. While at the hospital for respiratory failure and a stroke, I acquired many bedsores and was administered a tracheotomy to aide my breathing. I was out of shape and weighed in at over 600 pounds when I arrived. \r After I left Allegheny General, I decided to come to Consulate because I heard many good things about the therapy department. Because I was so overweight and the stroke, I could not even feed myself. I needed total care; I couldn't even put my hand behind my head, let alone use the bathroom or dress myself. I had a hard time sitting up in a bed or wheelchair. \r I was always in pain, and my knees were killing me. Since I have been at Consulate, I have lost 130 pounds and have been much more active. The wound care here have cleaned up my bedsores, my trach was removed, and I exercise with the wonderful Therapy staff. Now I can walk where I want to go, and am happier than I have been for a long time. Without the ladies in therapy at Consulate, I couldn't have been so successful. The therapy team put emphasis on my specific problems, and they are great motivators. I like them all and will miss everyone when I go home. more

Submitted by Resident\r 47 years old\r When I came to Consulate Health Care of Cheswick, I couldn't even sit up by myself on the side of my bed. The Physical Therapy team worked with me from day one in my bed helping to take me from sitting to standing. I was very nervous that I would fall, but they assured me that I would be fine, and I was. They took their time with me. They not only worked closely with me but also took the time to get to know me as we'll which helped make my therapy easier. Before I knew it I was taking a few steps, and the next thing I knew I was walking out the door and climbing stairs. It's been three months and I'm ready to go home and I owe it all the people at Consulate Physical Therapy!\r more

One of the biggest problems of any healthcare facility, hospital or nursing care, is that everyone's expectations are unrealistic. Staffing levels are way too low for care giver to patient ratio (sometimes 1 to 12 or more). There has been so many cuts in reimbursement that there isn't enough to cover the thousands it costs to give the care that is needed or deserved. Most families or residents have unreal expectations that they are going to get close to one on one care. Good efforts are put into trying to make it a home away from home. Imagine having 100 people you had to give medicine to, take to the toilet, shower, clean and cook for as well as finding hobbies or activities to keep them happy. I can tell you that many will need the toilet at the same time, want showered at different times, not like how you made their food and want something different while you are trying to help the one that, and god forbid, might be having a medical emergency. You would be in a sour mood too. Not because you are a bad person, and some might be, but you're only a human being trying to make everyone happy and failing at it cause it's impossible. Most of us struggle trying to keep our own family happy! This care costs thousands, most can't afford it, and yet they are taken in and cared for when their families cant, or they have no one. I don't doubt there are some issues, and I don't doubt that efforts are made to say thank you for the hard work. Times are tough and most struggle to make ends meet and these businesses are no different. We need to stop being so critical and get back to being thankful for what we do have - whether its a job to complain about or people and places to complain about that take care of our loved ones so we can go to the job we complain about to pay for the bills we complain about. Where would you or they be otherwise? more

I have had my mother stay at Consulate in Cheswick and would recommend this facility as a place to go for rehab and nursing care. I had mother in a different nursing home up the street from Consulate who had a higher star rating and was very unhappy with their care. I tranferred my mom to consulate and am so happy with my choice. The nursing staff have been wonderful to me and my mom and provided excellent care. The therapy staff have also been great and helped improve my moms ambulation and strength. The food was ok and what we expected for a nursing home feeding over 100 people. When I read the negative comments below I have to disagree. My mom and I met many other residents there and they all had nothing but good to say about Consulate and their care. It sounds like a disgrentled employee wrote those comments. The DIrector of Nursing and Administrator were wonderful and friendly. During my moms stay they have showed their appreciation for their staff by buying them pizza, having cookouts and even had a Mary Kay Rep provide manicures with free gifts for the staff during their breaks. It is terrible how someone turned a good thing into a negative. Consulate recently had an appreciation event at Narsici Winery for MD's and other local hopsital staff as well. What a great idea! Also most places have designated parking spots for staff and doctors. Unfortunately the parking lot is very small and if you seen what the Administrator drove you would not park near anyone either. The staff there are good people and deserve some recognition. Overall the facility could use some cosmetic upgrades but it is clean. Consulate did wonders for my mother and I would choose them first if in need of nursing home care again. I give Consulate a 5 star! more

This facility is a joke!!! My Grandmother was there the care she received was not even close to mediocre the staff for the most part was in a bad mood 90% of the time the older maintenance guy walked around holding a coffe cup all day and did nothing even after i had asked for things to be fixed nursing staff was rude and the things i hurd them talk about was not even fit for a bar. The bathrooms there probly havent been cleaned in 5 years i have no idea how's the state has not shut the doors on this place. There are many good nursing homes in the area this is not one.... more

Incompetence from top to bottom 12/10/2011

Under staffed, uneducated and under qualified staff. Lack of necessary medical supplies and equipment. Unrealistic expectations made by management to staff. Unprofessional floor staff, nurses talking on cell phones while pouring medications. Inappropriate conduct amongst staff. RNs, LPNs and CNAs not accountable. Many medication errors. False promises made to new incoming patients and their families. Not prepared to handle high accuity patients. Poor food quality and choices. Roof leaks a lot. Administrator and director of nursing park in the ""no parking"" fire zone because they're entitled. Running out of clean linen and diapers is almost a weekly occurence. Administrator makes cut backs to staffing, food quality and medical supplies vital for properly taking care of sick patients, while providing the mangagement with Mary Kay make-up parties (on company time and property), cheese and wine tasting events, bonuses, etc... I'm giving this review 1 star only because you can't choose zero stars. A very poor facility indeed. more

Outstanding Care, very friendly staff 10/21/2011

I was very sick during my stay at this facility. The nurses had alot of responsibilities caring for my multiple wounds and IV's. The nurses were knowledgeable and that made me feel at ease knowing they new what they were diong. The staff was very quick to answer my call bell, even though they were busy, they made me feel like I was the only person they had to take care of. I did not have much of an appitite, but they brought me all of my favorite foods and I eventually started to gain weight. The therapy I received at Consulate was exceptional....I cannot thank enough of the employees for the great care and compassion I received from all of them...Thank you! more

Wouldn't leave a dog there... 11/17/2010

My mother never had the right size briefs. I constantly begged for a washcloths. There was dried food all over my mother when I came to visit. Her dressing supplies were minimal at best. There was always an odor. They put more time and effort into the appearance of the place, which was a joke anyhow, than resident care. Never again. more

A very satisfied customer 6/12/2009

I have been a resident at Consulate Healthcare in Cheswick on several different occassions. During each of my stays I have received nothing but the best of care and service. The staff were very accomodating to my needs. The therapy dept went above and beyond to assure that I had the best outcome for me to return to home independantly. One Therapist even called my Ins Co to make sure I would be approved to receive all the services I needed. The Nursing dept quickly noticed every change in my condition that led to a quick intervention so my health would not decline. Their professional quick thinking is evident. The Soc Serv Dept always helped me with every question I had and helped make my transition from their facilty to home a smooth one. The Activiy Dept always made sure I had something to do. I even had an outside nail tech come into the facility to give me manicures. The food was good and if I did not like what was served they always provided me with an alternate to my liking. I would highly recommend Consulate Healthcare of Cheswick as a place to consider for long or short term care. Pros: Excellect Therapy, Nursing, Activity and Soc. Serv Dept more

Pleasant Surprise! 5/22/2009

I have to admit, after reading some of the reviews about this facility online, I was very skeptical about placing my mother in this facility. From the moment we walked into tha facility, I was surprised by just about everything. The facility was clean and the staff was friendly and caring. My mother was treated with respect and compassion for her entire 3 week stay. I would certainly recommend this facility. Pros: Friendly Staff Cons: Parking more

Horrible staff, Horrible food, Horrible patient care! 8/29/2008

I wouldnt recommend this place to ANYONE.. I, myself am a CNA at a local hospital, and what I have seen here, in THIS place is rediculous! My grandmother has NEVER recieved such horrible care.. The food is disgusting.. half the time it wasn't even cooked, it was COLD! Then after having numerous conversaitons with the Director of Hospitality, I was fed up.. she had a serioud attitude problem and seemed to care more about her cleavage hanging from her shirt. The Director of Nursing didnt impress me much neither. I have tried to explain to her about my grandmothers care, she pretty much told me if I didnt like to leave, which is exactly what I did. Just dont let your family member stay here. The evening shift on the second floor is appaling! All i witnessed was nurses and aides talking on cell phones, and eating. Although I would have to say there was a few caring workers, they werent there all the time though. SOMEONE NEEDS TO CALL THE STATE ON THIS ESTABLISHMENT! Pros: A few ( I mean few by maybe 3) good Aides or Nurses Cons: Too many to list, the place was filthy, the aides were careless, the office staff is repulsive, the company seems to care more about money than care of patients more
