I found HIAC through the Simonton website. I called the four closest authorized dealers and HIAC was within a hundred dollars or so of the lowest bidder. I met with Chris and finalized the order with him. As the windows are custom sized, for the most part, and I have a lot of them to do, we're at the mercy of the manufacturer in scheduling delivery.
There's no excuse for the salesperson not giving an estimate and I only found one company which was actually not willing to provide a written estimate. The others provided a hand-written estimate with sizes and prices as well as all other charges or they sent a formal estimate later.
The biggest problem with contractors is scheduling. Few will give a firm committment date and, when they do, are usually unable to stick to them. Of course, there are always problems which come up but I want a firm date so that I can plan my life around it. Instead, most want to seem like they're trying to be helpful by trying to "fit you in" their busy schedules. That doesn't work for me. I would rather set a firm date 6 weeks out than have them keep saying that they might be able to start in the next couple of days.
Pros: Friendly, good communication, good people
Cons: Didn't meet time committments
