I was in New York for about a week, getting myself geared up for an acting career, and found this small ad on Craigslist saying they are looking for extras, and to go ahead and email them my name and phone number for more info. I did this, asking for more info of course, but I got none. Just a hey, come see us today after 4.
But I was curious and new, so I went, got some small paragraph to read for an audition, and upon completion of the reading, I was told to call their CEO, at 10:30AM or so the next day. I did this and he said that they are very interested in me, and that they want to start using me regularly as an extra so I can get some experience. Next he told me that I needed to bring him a resume and headshot, and as I started to tell him that I didn't have them, he then told me that I am new at this, so we're gonna do it the right way. He gave me the number of a photographer named Jerry, told me to make an appointment with him, and to call him right back when I do, at which point he promptly hung up the phone before I could ask him any more questions.
So I took the next step in calling the photography studio, and this rude guy answered and defensively asked me where I got the number, that it is a private studio. I felt like I was being interrogated, but once I got it through to him that I was calling as instructed by the CEO, he lightened up and set me up for an appointment. I call the CEO back and he set me up to meet with him at AR's Times Square location after I get the pictures taken.
Thankfully I wised up, did some research, and applied some common sense, only to find that it wreaked of a scam. Why? Well lets look back on things. I'd never seen the CEO, yet, somehow he knew I was going to make him all this money without meeting me beforehand. It was not him who screened the audition keep in mind. But might I highlight the fact that the Craigslist ad said ""email for more info."" But I went through all of this, and what do I still not get?? Info! I didn't know what the hell I was going to be cast in, when, or how much it paid, yet he wanted me to go to his photographer and pay for headshots when I knew nothing about this guy, his agency, or his face. BS, look out people, it stinks, and many of us here share similar stories it seems. I mean, it could just be bad business practice, but I would think it should be better given the fact that they say they've been around for 34 years. Scams have been around for awhile, so wouldn't it behoove them to change things up if so many people online are saying they're system is reminiscent of a con artist's scheme? I would keep my distance.
Pros: Many of the reviews on this place seem to coincide.
Cons: The collection of reviews brings the foul smell of a scam.
