Avoid rude customers 7/4/2008

I honestly pity the person below me who wrote the review about 19Market. It's so interesting to see people who go to restaurants and have no patience and don't know the little things behind the scene and then act as if they are the only customers in the place and go online and start their bash talking. Little does she know that people who are placed in the patio area already have plates that are only there for display, and when the server seats you down and at least orders some drinks or appetizers for you, she will then change out the REAL plate seatings. If i wasn't wrong, it was a blazing hot day at 19Market where the air conditioner was not working so everyone wanted to sit outside and in the backroom where there was cool air. The funny thing is that the host who had an ""attitude"" was actually also a server who was tending to a backroom full of people. Basically, all there is to it is that people should not go to a restaurant and think that they are the only special people there who need special service. As far as the person who ""could have been the owner that didn't know how to run the place;"" well, I hate to say this but she was not there to begin with. more

Abysmal service 6/23/2008

I rarely feel I want to leave no tip at a restaurant, but 19 Market had AWFUL service. Too bad...it was near our hotel and we were in town for a concert. Our hotel suggested it because we wanted good food and it's near the HP pavillion. We walked in and the host was talking to someone at the bar, back to the door and didn't turn around until I said hello. First she wanted to seat us in the back room of an entirely empty restaurant, but we asked for front patio because it was nice out. Our plates on the table were very dirty, and we realized it was only the host and the bartender working, so someone barely came to the table, and the host had major attitude, really bad. The bartender was at least helpful, changing out my plate when she saw me wiping it down. We never saw them again and when we asked for the bill, it never came out, and we had to go inside on numerous occasions to find them. I saw a woman who looked like the owner, just standing around, and she clearly didn't run this restaurant well the day we were there. What a bummer. We would have rather enjoyed picking up a burrito around the corner or even a hot pretzyl at the pavillion than sit at that miserable dinner. We cancelled our dinner entrees because a)we were full from appetizers and b)couldn't stand being there any longer. The food was not bad, but the experience ensured we'll never go back. If you're understaffed and can't serve customers, at least acknowledge it, don't give attitude and disappear and make us find you to get our food and check! Sorry to be bitter, but that's how it made us feel. We did leave a tip, but only because we felt bad for the overworked bartender who was pouring drinks and trying to wait on the tables the host/server abandoned. Pros: close to hotels, hp pavillion Cons: poor service more

A Great Place to Eat! 12/29/2007

Recently, a friend and I ate at 19 Market. We were looking for a restaurant that served good food, contemporary setting, and a helpful staff. After reading the reviews I was looking forward to eating there. When I arrived the owner greeted us and sat us down. The server was friendly and helpful. We ordered fresh spring rolls, mango beef, scallop in black bean sauce, and garlic noodles. The food was well proportioned and tasty. After dinner we got a drinks from the bar. The bar is well stocked. Overall, a great place for dinner. I will go back again. Try ""Hanna Kisses""-- a tasty drink made by the owner. Pros: Tasty food, Ambience, Well-stocked bar, Right Price, Service more

THE BEST 11/26/2007

Me and my wife eat here every month. I LOVE food, and I absolutely love 19 Market. The food is wonderful, especially the Bo Luc Lac, and the desserts are delectable. The service is great. I always get my orders brought to me in little time, and good manner. The waiters are are courteous and respectful. I have spoken to the manager few times, and she is a very polite, respectful, professional woman. I also love the wine list. I always eat here on special occasion, and this is by far my most favorite restaurant. EAT AT 19 MARKET!!! Pros: Everything About It! Cons: That I can't eat here everyday! more

Try the calamari....yum! 9/15/2007

My husband and I poped into 19 Market after dining next door at ""the coop"" and just went in for an appetizer and a couple of drinks. We were really just killing time until we went to a show. We sat at the bar and everyone in the place seemed warm and friendly. We had a nice conversation with the bartender and got our appetizer and drinks quickly. The calamari was one of the best that I have ever had. The decor is nice and our whole experience was a delightful surprise. more

Concerned about the bad reviews 7/27/2007

OK I am writing this review because I am a very concerned fan of this restaurant. I have read the good reviews and balanced it with the bad reviews and I truly just want the readers of citysearch to judge with an open mind before making final judgements. Points to consider;\r 1. 3 of the 9 reviews I believe are an anomaly\r 2. The restaurant has been open for 3 years and has developed a steady fand loyal following \r 3. The owner is a charming, reasonable and most of all the most respectful and accomodating person you will ever meet UNLESS you disrespect her, like any passionate creative woman who believes in her work.\r 4. Empirical data \r a. The owner has been voted one of the top chefs/owner in San Jose not once but several times\r b. The restaurant consistenly has great reviews from other sites and magazine i.e Wave Magazine \r 5. Personal Note - The staff and owner have become my personal friends and we have developed a really good client/restaurant relationship\r 6. Personal Note - The food is one of the best culinary experience for Vietnamese fusion food I have ever experienced, their prices do not exactly reflect the same price as your top Vietnamese restaurants in the Bay area but the food is certainly head and shoulders apart from ANY restaurant in the area\r 7. Two of the three bad reviews happened on ""Valentines"" which is the busiest time for a romantic moderately priced restaurant\r \r In conclusion dear readers of citysearch. I do not know of any POPULAR restaurant that does not have its detractors. I do not know of any POPULAR/SUCCESSFUL restaurant that has always made EVERYBODY happy. In jest, I would even say that the most successful restaurants because of how busy they are and not because of WHO they are, service quality tend to be sacrificed because DEMAND is higher than the SUPPLY. Pros: The food and owner are very delicious Cons: Like any restaurant when they are busy THEY ARE BUSY more

Horrible Experience with Owner and Staff 7/4/2007

We ordered our food ""to-go"" because we were running late for the 4th of July celebration in San Jose. We are vegetarians and ordered Garlic Noodles. The only request we had was to substitute the egg noodles with some kind of vegetarian noodles. What we got was boiled noodles, with nothing...no salt, no spices, nothing just boiled cold noodles for $7.00. When we questioned our order, the staff gave us a refund of $4.00 and asked us to leave. We were humiliated and asked to speak with the manager. She was incredibly rude, and told us we didn't place the order with her and she was not responsible for the fact they fleeced us. She didn't even care to listen to what we wanted to say. Even the waiter was on our side, and she told him to get us out of the restaurant. She also told us that she has to charge $7.00 for boiled noodles because she has many overhead charges. We returned the money, and she could didn't even bother apologizing once. \r \r Its a rude, and dishonest business they run there!!! Do not bother returning anything you've ordered, because you will get a rude staff humiliating you. Pros: Same as every other place in San Jose Cons: Incredily rude service, prices not too low more

A very Nice Surprise 3/31/2007

On a recent business trip through San Jose, a friend recommended this vietnamese restaurant in downtown san jose. What a nice surprise, the decor was warm and very inviting, which is not the same as a typical vietnamsese restaurant. While waiting to be seated we were at the bar, and it seemed like everyone knew each other. Once seated, the service was friendly, efficient and helpful since some of the dishes were not familiar to us. Our group of four ordered dishes to share. We found the BBQ short ribs, crab puffs, spring rolls, shrimp bruschetta and the baby clams to be delicious appertizers. The green papaya/mango salads and flank steak with green apples are a must try. For main courses, we loved the sea bass, ""Bo luc lac"", HaLong Bay fried rice, tiger prawns, very tasty and delicious, especially the sauce, so good that you can just eat the mixture of the sauce and rice and that would wonderful aready. For dessert try, the mango sticky rice and chocolate lava.\r \r The wine list included a pretty good variety and from different regions of the world, the price was reasonable and a few good bargains. The cocktail menu included traditional drinks as well as a variety of drinks made up by the chef/owner Hanna and her bartenders ( apparently most of whom have a day job and doing this just for extra income and for fun), and actually some of the drinks are quite good.\r \r By the way, besides what we mentioned above, this restaurant is a very good place to conduct business as well as relax or unwind at the end of the day. \r \r Highly recommeded. Pros: atmosphere, food, bar, service, free/validated parking Cons: closed a little too early for downtown. more

Great vietnamese spot 3/29/2007

Great ambiance, and food. no question...I enjoyed my entire two hours at this restaurant, and it it truly one of the gems of downtown san jose. more

Overpriced, So so food 3/23/2007

I tried this restaurant because they participate with milleage plus dining program. I was disappointed with my experience. I ordered one of the expensive item on the menu seabass in claypot for $19 and garlic noodle for $7. The seabass was one of the smallest piece I ever seen, it was okay, cooked with sweet soysause but not worth $19. The garlic noodle was equally bad. I couldn't taste the garlic, butter or pepper just bland noodle that you can boil yourself at home. For garlic noodle, this restaurant can't compare with Thanh Long in SF. Perhaps they should buy the recipe. Service was okay, the waiter was friendly. Not recommended. Pros: Free parking Cons: Overpriced more

rude owner nightmare.... 2/15/2007

Stephan15's comments are spot on....we arrived at this place the same night, but right at 5pm and our experience was one of the worst experiences of BAD ATTITUDE i have ever experienced in a restaurant. the owner was completely rude to us, insisting we have two of the prix fix dinners despite the fact that we ordered one and explained that we were just stopping in for a quick snack before a business meeting. She came over 25 minutes after we ordered, told us she made two $40/dinners for us and said we couldn't split the dinner (the place probably had a total of 8 diners, so we weren't cutting her out of 2 diner revenues), and we we only wanted the appetizer and entree so she would have made plenty of money on our tab.. We re-explained and she threw down the one plate and stormed away. At that point we pushed the plate across the bar, paid our bar tab, and walked out as she very publicly lectured her employees about our order. I feel sorry for anybody that works for this woman. take the drive up to the Slanted Door in SF and spare yourself the experience. Pros: nobody in the place so it's not too noisy Cons: you deserve beter for your dining dollar. more

Horrible customer service - Lucky the food was delicious - if not COLD.... 2/15/2007

Went there for Valentine's Day. Had a late dinner at 9pm but the place was still full, but I was seated promtly. The place only has about 12 tables, but the service was BAD. I felt really bad cuz the food was so good, but oh my God... good thing Im with my hottie and Im feeling good. First off, the menu is price fixed on V-day with 2 options for each course, so you'd think service would be fast... \r So we wait about 15-20 min till they finally take our order and ask for water as well since people who arrived after us have their water and champagne toast already. We ordered some wine as well which I assumed would come out after finishing the champagne. Our appetizers finally came out after another 20-25 min which were slightly cold already and we realized we didnt have any silverware or napkins. THEN about 5 min later our main course came out! And no wine! So I canceled the wine, they appologized and offered 2 glasses of house red on the house which I agreed on. Im a very tolerant person, but MY GOD, whats going on? I dont mind waiting for whatever if we have drinks; I love 3 hour dinners, but waiting for so long with no drink then having all the food come out at once is UNPROFESSIONAL - something that should happen at Denny's.\r \r So overall the food was really good so It's a shame that their service is SO BAD. I don't think Ill be going back there. Pros: Food, Ambiance Cons: Service more

So Good! 11/11/2006

This place is really great. Much cooler than your typical downtown SJ spot. The food was great, the service was friendly and the atmosphere is very good. more

Great food, friendly staff 10/12/2006

I have dined here 3 times - twice it was a party of 4 and once was a party of 12. All three times the staff was friendly with great service, and the food was very good. It is a touch pricy compared to other places in the area, but I think the overal experience is top notch and the quality and selection of food is makes it an enjoyable dining experience. I will definately return. Pros: friendly staff, good selection of food, good quality Cons: can get loud when crowded more

Good Date Night Place and Great alternative to PF Changs 9/6/2006

19 Market is a modern high end Asian-Vietnamese Resturant. Upon walking in here I was very impressed with the decore of 19 Market. The decore is a modern sophisticated asian style done just right. 19 Market has a good menu choice to choose from that will appeal to most appetites. The have a nice balance of beef, seafood, chicken, and vegitarian options prepared in different ways from curry, terriyaki, grilled, stir fried, and some claypot options. They have a good drink menu with a variety of mixed drink specials and good wine selection.\r \r The food quality here is good. It is a step up or two from most take out asian resturants and just slightly above a PF Changs. The portion sizes are just about right and everything is spiced with the right amount of flavor. The prices here are on the high side and on par with PF Changs. Most of the appitizers run between $6-$9, entrees $10-$20, and vegitable and sides about $13-$20.\r \r The only real negative I have to say about 19 Market is service. When I arrived there, there was only 1 server taking care of about 10 tables. The server was also the bartender/hostess/bust boy. This guy did work hard to serve us all (much kudos to him) but for the this type of place there should have been atleast 2 people. Might be just a 1 time thing because someone called in sick. \r \r One tip, probably the best deal here is their happy hour deal. Appitizers are half off and so are drinks. If you can make happy hour, there are enough options on the appitizers to make a pretty good meal.\r \r Overall this is good place to come to as a better alternative to PF Changs, for a date night, or for the happy hour specials. Pros: Ambience, Food Quality, Menu Selection Cons: May lack proper staffing needs, Prices are on the High Side more
