Belcourt is the place to go for obscure films -- obscure to most Nashvillians anyway. The theatre has struggled to stay open for years, operating on a shoestring budget; it's impressive that they are still making it happen.
The theatre is old and has lots of character. It has lots of broken seats, too. If you love small independent films, you have to put up with those small discomforts. The management tries to enhance your experience by offering grownup refreshment choices -- wine, liquor and pizza in addition to the usual popcorn and candy.
The Belcourt Theatre also hosts concerts and plays and is a supporter of local artistic endeavors. I wish that lots more people would visit the Belcourt on a regular basis; it deserves Nashville's support.
