Chelsea Recreation center is part of the new york city park's and recreation service. As such, it offers free membership for children (under 18) and a 75 dollar year long membership for adults (there are discounts for senior citizens but you have to check that for yourself). With this membership, you can access ANY city or parks recreation center, not just the one where you signed up at, such as asser levey, for free. There are weekly chess games. The weight room here is extremely small, with no more than 5-10 equipment lined up. There is an additional room with then treadmills. There are 2-3 pool tables and one table tennis table. The greatest asset of Chelsea is the half size olympic swimming pool. Which is open year round (i believe). Free or deep discount classes, such as taichi and yoga, or learn to swim classes are offered year round. Located right across from a residential project, the neighborhood has a lot of flavor. Overall it is very safe. It is two blocks from the a,e train station on 23 rd st. hope this helps.
