Bad all around 4/2/2012

My not-so-great experience began with my phone call to place an order. The young woman who I dealt with was less than helpful and actually a little bit snippy. I told her I had never been there before and wanted help selecting flavors for cupcakes and frosting. She made me repeat EVERY SINGLE THING I said at least twice, and not just to confirm things. She just didn't understand my simple request for six rather ordinary cupcakes. She wasn't helpful. When I sent my husband to pick up the cupcakes, they were already sealed in a box so he couldn't even look at them without destroying the box. Since they were a gift, he didn't want to end up with the wrong cupcakes, but he also couldn't get enough assistance to get a new box. STRIKE ONE.\r \r When we finally did open the box, we had no clue what flavor was what since three of the six cupcakes looked identical and we did not order any duplicates. (I had ordered specific flavors for specific people.) We decided to just cut up the cupcakes and share since we didn't know what flavor was what. All except for the ""Reese's"" flavor, we didn't like any of them very much and never did manage to identify what one of those three identical cupcakes was, which doesn't say much for their flavor.\r We were also disappointed to see that these were cupcakes only the size of what you would make at home, not the generously sized ones you would normally get from a place that specializes in cakes and cupcakes. STRIKE TWO. \r \r We found the cupcakes to be dry. The frosting was waaaaay too sweet, and I'm a sugar addict - I don't know if I've ever said something was too sweet before in my lifetime. Also, the frosting didn't taste fresh and we couldn't tell what it was made out of - maybe buttercream? Yuck. I think so, because it was greasy and I specifically said that we didn't want any buttercream frosting and was assured that it wasn't when I ordered the cupcakes. STRIKE THREE.\r \r Guess, what, Violet's Cakes? YOU'RE OUT! !!\r \r How in the world could you possibly have won anything on Food Network, as you claim? \r more

New owner = decline in quality 6/29/2011

If you've loved Violet's in the past, be ready for a totally different experience today. I understand that it has changed owners and I couldn't be more disappointed to have lost a local treasure. Whereas the prior ownership was easy to work with, accommodating, creative and talented, my most recent experience was with a difficult to work with and rude staff. More importantly, the product has suffered greatly. I've always raved about the quality of the cake and the amazing creations Violets would produce. This time the cupcakes were terrible - the flavor & consistency were mediocre and the decorations sloppy. We'll be finding a new bakery. more

Most beautiful wedding cakes, don't let anyone tell you differently, for a great price. 9/8/2008

I just want to let everyone know that Violet's cakes goes above and beyond what you ask for. I recently got my wedding cake from them in August, and it was going to ride on my lap to San Diego in the heat of the day. It was a beautiful 3 tierd red and black cake with a bow on the top. It was definately bigger than I thought it was going to be, but it was the most beautiful cake I had ever seen. I had told Denise what I wanted, and they took my dream cake and made it sooo much better. The ride to San Diego was cold, but it made it in one piece, after a nervous 3 hour ride in traffic to San Diego. I would buy another cake from them in a heartbeat. They are super nice and Denise is a godsend. Thanks for everything Violet's cakes.--Melissa Pros: Super nice employees and great atmosphere more

Dangerously delicious!!!! 11/6/2007

The first thing I noticed was how friendly the staff was. They were completely accomadating! The cupcakes were like none other. I picked up a couple dozen to take to friends. We completely pigged out!! My favorite was the mint chocolate chip and the the red velvet chocolate. The cake is so moist and the frosting was....I can't even describe it! Totally yummy ,go check it out for yourself. I also saw them decorating an outragesly cool cake. They said they make cakes for all occasions. :) Check them out you won['t be sorry! Pros: customer service, flavor, variety Cons: parking more

Not Worth the Icing on their Cake 10/10/2007

I have never been so insulted! I ordered cupcakes over the phone and specifically asked if it would be possible to pick them up at 5p on a Wednesday! Only to find that the order was never started! And I was not even offered an alternative. Instead the employee looked at me as if I were her annoyance. This place is not worth the icing on their damn cake! I recommend Sprinkles!! \r \r I have had better service from a six year old selling me lemonade on the corner!! Cons: Horrible Customer Service! more

best cupcakes in l.a. 9/26/2007

Friendly service and excellent cupcakes! 6/20/2007

Violet's was a transcendent experience. Not only is the service wonderful (everyone there was really nice), the cupcakes are amazing. I am especially fond of their frosting which is creamy and perfectly complements the cake. They are delicious cupcakes! Pros: Great cupcakes Cons: Street parking, closes early more

BETTER THEN SPRINKLES!!! 4/7/2007

Far better then Sprinkles....and at a better price. I used to be a hard core sprinkles patron and wel...having stopped by Violet's I have to say I am converted. Her cupcakes are so moist and the ratio of frosting to cake is sublime....The strawberry cupcake has actual strawberry puree in the frosting and is exquisite. And the Red velvet would make any southern person homesick. If you are lucky enough to live in the pasedena area frequent Violet's and if like me you don't live in pasadena...IT IS WORTH THE DRIVE. Pros: great service and cupcake selections Cons: parking....? more

She Shoots, She Scores! 1/6/2007

Small family owned bakery. Really small. Her cupcakes are excellent. I bring them to meetings and people just flip out, even the girls ""who never eat sweets."" My girlfriend said the brownie was one of the best she has ever had, and that is saying something. The flavors rotate every day. I tried a peppermint one, my girl had vanilla on vanilla. Both fantastic. Pasadena needs a little cupcake place. The Westside has Sprinkles, now we have Violet's. It is creative and high quality. Get there early as she sells out fast. Hours are weird. Closed on Sundays and Mondays and closes Tuesday at 3pm. You will end up bringing these to people/meetings etc. because you will always get a positive review. Cupcakes are the bomb. Long may they reign. Pros: Delicious Cupcakes and Brownies. Cons: None. more
