Best

A restaurant that has consistently delivered for us fine food and solid service in a stylish space.\r \r A nice Peninsula dining option. Highly recommended.

Awful Service/Expensive/Better Alternatives 10/3/2009

Went there many times. The service kept getting worse and worse. Finally, took a client to brunch. They took 45 minutes to serve our brunch order! No explanation. Kept asking server about meal and send would check but no response. I can not risk taking friends or clients here again. Sorry, but when I pay this type of money, I expect at the least good service. Pros: Elegant Cons: Service is incredibly slow more

Nothing French or edible here! 2/15/2007

If it wasn't so expensive, this place would be laughable. The $75 valentine's day dinner was really vile....blini appetizer: blini hard; no measurable caviar...so it's some smoked salmon.\r \r The lobster dish was tough and the risotto cloying and salty....really bad!\r \r Desert was a joke..some stale things (fondue??) to be dipped in chocolate...hardly anything to eat.\r \r folks, this place is overpriced, pretentious and bad....and the wine list is a catastrophe unless you have options at a silicon valley company........avoid this place at all (high) costs.....oh yes, they rammed 4 courses on us in less than an hour........................ Pros: it has an elevator Cons: everything else, particularly the food and service more

Awful service, bad attitude 9/24/2006

This overpriced and ""over attitude"" restaurant is dated. It shouldn't take 2 1/2 hours for dinner when there's no one else in the restaurant. Their corkage policy is stiff and given their overpriced wine list, their philosophy seems to be maximize profits, minimize customer experience. We're not going back! Pros: Food is good, not great Cons: Service was awful - slow combined with too much attitude more

kudos on all fronts!! 4/17/2006

i love this place. always a consistent dining experience at viognier - from the food, wine, service, ambience, all-around wonderful. absolutely recommend the pairings (you'll stand amazed at how pairings enhance flavor/taste. side note - J's bubble room also great with their pairings). i have yet to encounter a 'missed' entree at viognier; flavor always outstanding. if there's one constructive thing i can point to, i could say i've had better desserts. last note - if you're a pinot fan, don't miss out on their merry edwards reserves! more

Wonderful find on the peninsula! 4/1/2006

I only recently ventured upon Viognier after a friend of mine suggested we dine there after our sunday afternoon cooking class. Our entire 3hour dining experience was superb. From the sommelier to our fantastic waiter to all the other service staff, everyone was extremely friendly and created for a fine dining experience. We decided not to opt for the course pairings (which I will definitely be back to try out!) and opted for oysters on the halfshell, duck prosciutto pizzetta and ahi (prepared 3different ways/flavors). and of course a fabulous pinot, william selyem which always wins me over hands-down. EVERYTHING was so wonderful to the taste. You always know when you've had a great meal at a great restaurant when you're looking forward to introducing more of your friends to the place AND wanting to go back with them! more

great service great food 2/11/2006

Its nice to have a restaurant like Viognier located here in downtown San Mateo. The food is well prepared and imaginative, and the service is polite and professional. San Francisco is the closest place to get anything compareable and after a nice enjoyable meal, maybe a tasting menu with wine, I don't feel like driving. Plus it is located at Draeger's so you can pick up a neat cooking tool or something for the pantry. I always like to bring my out of town friends to impress them. Pros: parking, private room, cooking school more

top chef in unique setting 12/8/2005

This is by far one of the top culinary spots on the peninsula. Food is always excellent. Reserve a seat near the cooking class room to get a peak at the culinary offering of the evening. Pros: free tasters more

Summer is here 7/25/2005

I have always liked going to Draeger's market and I just recently tried dining at Viognier. What a wonderful experience. Chef Scott Giambastiani's new summer menu is great. The heirloom tomato salad with corn, arugula and basil viniagrette really says summer, and for my entree I had the Ahi Tuna prepared three ways. Three perfect different preparations of tuna on the same plate. Save some room for desert, the ice creams and sorbets are to die for. Our server wsa attentive and very knowledgeable about everything on the menu, and the sommelier reccommended a great pinot noir to complement our meal. One of the best meals I have ever had. more

decent food, slow service and odd decor 12/22/2004

the food was inventive and nicely displayed, but it took forever for them to serve. the decor is terribly strange for an upscale restaurant. i appreciate great food, but at these prices, i also want my food to arrive at a decent hour and i want to experience real ambiance, not some second rate interior designer's idea of what defines class. Pros: inventive food Cons: , odd decor more

my favorite in the bay area 2/9/2004

I've dined at Viognier at least a dozen times, and they have all been terrific. The seasonal menu makes every trip a different experience, and all the dishes have been excellent. The tastings menu is very worthwhile. But what makes this restaurant so special is that the staff and the kitchen are very willing to produce a ""unique"" dining experience for you with your own customized tastings menu. We've done this twice now, and they are very good in working with you to create dishes that you want or recommend dishes based on ingredients. Viognier is hands down my favorite restaurance in the Bay Area. Pros: flexible kitchen, easy parking, great value more

Creation 8/6/2003

Viognier is on of my very favorite restaurants. Chef Scott Giambastiani is very creative with all the flavors and food products. His Lobster bisk soup is one of my many favorites. The ambience is great, very inviting..Service was great, David Partney is excellent server, truly madde my dining experience on eto remember. With Scott changing the menu every season, I get more compelled to dine again and again with the change of season. I highly this restaurant to all my friends and family. Pros: Great Food, Ambience, Service more

Excellent food and services 7/25/2003

The food was just excellent there - everything from entrees to appetizers to desserts. Definitely worth a try for fusion cruisine lovers! Pros: Excellent Food, Excellent Desserts, Good Parking Cons: Expensive more

great food, odd service 3/11/2003

excellent food (roasted mushroom & sherry soup = esp. excellent), excellent wine (2000 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir), but the service was absolutely not what one would expect for the price we paid; our server seemed flustered & on the verge of panic throughout the meal, and there were lengthy delays between every course. Probably an anomaly, I would certainly dine there again. Pros: wine list, creative menu Cons: bizarre service more

Great Cuisine 9/26/2002

The dining experience is fantastic. Ken Knox is one of the best and truly makes dining at Viognier a wonderful experience. His knowledge of wines is unbelievable. Viognier is the best restaurant in the Bay Area in my opinion. more
