I cant help but think that the glowing reviews are from desperate vegans aching for a restaurant that serves any vegan dishes. I'm an occasional ""flexatarian"" tending towards ve...

OPEN LATE! FOOD'S GREAT! MAKE A DATE! NOW! 3/17/2007

This is the best Indian food I've eaten in my life hands down. The Vegetarian is an undiscovered gem just a stone's throw from Minneapolis. We were seated without fuss at almost nine o'clock and were treated to some of the best service in the Twin Cities. Though we know the more people find out about the Vegetarian the harder it will be to get a table, it will be well worth it to keep this revelation alive. \r \r We each ordered the same dinner special, a sampler of Palak Paneer, Samosa, Pulao, Dal, Raita, Vegetable, and a mango desert that blew our minds. It was only $12 a piece and they kept the Chai coming the whole meal. You can't go wrong with such a reasonably priced offering that hits all the bases and leaves you wanting more. We almost went back again the next night, but I ate the leftovers for lunch.\r \r The chef came to our table to check on us and answer all of our questions. I implore everyone who loves food to check out the Vegetarian. Pros: Everything Cons: None. Seriously. more

Wonderful sattvic food 3/10/2007

Namaskar. Having recently re-adopted a vegetarian lifestyle I was pleasantly surprised to find this restaraunt in my neighborhood. My test of an Indian restaraunt is to ask them if they have anything appropriate for a ""Jain"" diet. Not only did they know what I was talking about, they whipped up some dal and recently a channa pinhdi (very nicely spiced) for me. The service is attentive but not intrusive. I was joined by five friends , four of them omniverous, who all enjoyed the food and the service. I have yet to sample the entire menu, and I really want to try the idli and the dosas. Seating is limited but I've always been seated quickly. This tells me that Ashok's advertising budget is too small. For the time being I am glad I found an ""undiscoverd"" gem, though I fervently hope that this restaraunt stays around for a long time and I'll need to wait for my dinner. I'll give it a ""10"" after I sampled more of the menu. Pros: Ample free parking behind the restaruant and knowlegable waitstaff for newbies more

Weekend Brunch/Lunch Haven with Prices to make you Blush 3/4/2007

\r \r I took my two adult daughters and 11-month old granson to this restaurant on a cold March Sunday when the wait at our usual veggie Indian buffet was too long for us. We are SO GLAD we drove a few blocks south to The Vegetarian. I'd driven by before, and thought the name was ordinary - but the food is not! \r \r The buffet at 11:30 Sunday morning was fresh, clean, and varied. Plenty of choices, and the seasonings were deeply spiced but not ""just"" hot, complex and fragrant and varied -- not just the same old curries. In fact, these seasonings were special, specific to this chef and this dining room, not just generic midwesternized curry. \r \r We were greeted warmly, and seated in a comfy draft-free place with the baby (who ATE and enjoyed the entire experience), received a warm basket of the best, fluffiest and crispiest and tenderest tandoori naan bread in town within minutes of grabbing our first platefuls of fabulous saag, curry, dal... and the biggest and tastiest crispy masala dosa in town arrived a few minutes later. \r \r The service was friendly without being intrusive, the fresh clean dining room mirrored and filled with gold and red hangings that warmed up the cold morning -- and the golbi, halwa and pretzelshaped jalebi for dessert were rich and sweet -- far superior to the usual mushy tasteless sweeties that are standard restaurant fare.\r \r The prices were indecent: we spent less than $40 for three adults and a hungry toddler. We will be back! Pros: Food, value, service, parking - date night or family night Cons: None - except that it's Minneapolis, and we'd been too dumb to drive nine blocks til now more

Great vegetarian Indian food 3/3/2007

This place has long been a family favorite and since their move to vegetarian cuisine it is HIGH on the list. The flavors are outstanding. Each dish is carefully prepared. The service is great and fairly attentive. Ashok continues to serve some of the best Indian food in the city. Pros: Amazing food and flavors. Cons: Service can seem a bit slow. more

My Vote for Best Indian Restaurant 3/2/2007

I have been to many Indian restaurants in this city, and this is my favorite. The chef, Ashok Bedi, creates dishes with spices I've never tasted to create savory complex flavors. I am not a vegetarian, but I would eat here once a week if my schedule allowed it! The samosas, onion bhaji (a more interesting form of an onion ring if you haven't had one) are delicious. The batter is spiced. I think the Palak Paneer is wonderful--it once again has Bedi's signature touch--his own flair for spice. The Pindi Chana may seem simple on the menu as it reads ""chickpeas in a pleasantly spiced sauce,"" but it tastes like butter. That's right, butter, because the rich flavors overwhelm the chickpeas and they just slide onto the fork ,and of course into the mouth. You may want to order a sweet Lassi to cool down your mouth. I like the spice medium. And, please, don't be surprised if you find yourself passing a green leaf across the table for a friend to try, or perhaps that plump herb that tastes like a raisin, but clearly isnt' --just to try to guess what these flavors are. They're clearly from a country far, far away! Pros: The food, the price, the smiling waitstaff, the chef who will come out to ask you how things are. more

Great Indian Food 2/21/2007

Tasty! This is an Indian restaurant I have visited twice now. Each time I've had interesting and satisfying meal. The servers and the owner are attentive and friendly. Our server on the most recent visit was particularly knowledgable and helped us choose a great meal according to our tastes. Tons of value for the buck here. This is a great place to eat! Pros: Service more

Great tasting food I can eat over and over again - and I'm not a vegetarian 2/9/2007

I eat their food often even though I'm not a vegetarian. The food is hearty, healthy, tasty and prepared to order. I like somewhat spicy food and the chef always gets it right. Eggplant Masala, Avial, Pindi Chana, Palak Paneer, rice pudding - they are all excellent and consistently prepared. And their menu is extensive so I can always try something new. Servers have come and gone but the best has been an attentive Indian woman who gives me dining recommendations that matches my mood and taste that day. She's never steered me wrong. The restaurant is a welcome change of pace from other area restaurants and also a good value for the money. Pros: Food; Parking; No need to make reservations; Small & quiet; Great chai & super desserts Cons: Cold restrooms in winter; Needs more ambiance; more
