Do not take your pet to VCA! 6/2/2012

This is the worst animal hospital I have ever experienced. Please do yourself and your pet a favor and do NOT go here! \r Our little dog was misdiagnosed, treated with the wrong antibiotics, MISDIAGNOSED AGAIN, and treated again with the wrong antibiotics. We are $1200 into getting treatment for a SIMPLE URINARY TRACT INFECTION! \r In addition, the doctor has twice been incredibly rude and condescending to me. She just would not listen to the symptoms I was telling her the dog was experiencing. I suspect to cover up the fact that she was unable to diagnose a urinary tract infection without charging us yet another $200, for a test she claimed needed to be done "just to be sure" that the infection was cured. By the way, each antibiotic was $66! We have worked with veterinarians for years and have never experienced this level of incompetence and unjustifiable cost. I will also warn you that that their marketing is impeccable. I have been hounded with phone calls and mailings for routine, an more

I will never go back - Over priced - Misdiagnosed 8/5/2010

Took my dogs in for the annual exam and vaccinations. I did think the doctor and the assistant were very friendly. They both were really slow and took forever giving me all kinds of info multiple times. I was in there a total of 3 hours.\r \r I paid $1400 for three dogs. Two of which were regular checks and the other one had what they said was an ear infection. They assured me it was minor and no ruptured ear drum. She was medicated for the infection and not the rupture. Those meds are actually harmful to ruptures. My dog got worse and I took her to a different vet. VCA old town would only release her partial records to the new vet. I spent another $360 for a treatment that will work either way for an infection or rupture.\r \r I will never be back to VCA. more

Over Charged and Rude - Dr. Pohl gets two thumbs down! 12/27/2009

I recently brought my dog to VCA Old Town because he was suffering from heart problems. They charged me $600 to diagnose him only enough to refer him to a cardiologist. The cardiologist was surprised to see the amount of tests they ran and I found out most were unneccesary by another vet. They also put him on a diaretic to clear fluid that was in his lungs. After a few weeks on the diaretic I was leaving on vacation with my dog and tried to get a refill. Out of nowhere they said they could not refill without another full exam. I tried to explain that I did not have time or the money and they refused to fill the perscription and also said that it was probably not neccesary. Talking to Dr Pohl about this is like talking to a brick wall - after every question she would simply repeat the same thing in her usuall rude way of talking down to people. Within a few days my dog was very sick again and had to go to an emergency room. The vet there was able to perform the same exam for le more

Vca Old Town Animal Hospital is great for acupunture 6/28/2009

The staff at Old Town is great. I have been bringing my pets there for several years. They have acupuncture that I have been doing with my cat. She feels great afterwards and you can barley tell that she has joint problems. This hospital work with you to find the best treatment for your pet. more

LOVE THEM!! 5/27/2009

They listen to me. I've been to other vets where my pet and I where just numbers in a computer. They treat the pets & owners like family. The front desk is great--they always great us by name. I know that all medicine is expensive. For animals or people, but I know at Old Town they will give us the best care more

Excellent Care 10/5/2008

I first came to VCA 11.5 years ago after we found our dog in Rock Creek Park. She was about 9 months old. The vet check for a microchip and brought Honey dog up to date on shots. They have never insisted on unnecessary vaccines or anything else. Everyone has always been helpful, friendly and kind--when Honey needed a cancerous tumor removed 18 months ago-they did the surgery-called me with results and follow up. When arthritis immobilized her suddenly three years ago--they took care of her and the meds made all the difference--she could walk and play again within 2 weeks. She is in her end of life time now and they are extraordinarily supportive. Drs. McClean, Reed-Angela, Jessica, India and the young techs. more

Best in Alexandria!! 10/2/2008

My family has used Old Town Hospital for 8+ years. I have seen each vet at least once or twice. They are very compassionate. They treat your pet as if they are theirs. Last year, I had my 14 year old cat put down--they were right by my side until the end. I could not have asked for more. more

People should pay attention 7/29/2008

I have been going to Old Town for 6+ years. They have never given my dog a Giardia vaccine. They test for it once a year in my dog's stool. I know that one of the reasons we began using Old Town is because they are AAHA certified. I think the person below is thinking of Banfield. My sister goes to the one in Alexandria by Target and her dog gets every vaccine you can think of. I think that they puppy below got tested for giardia not the shot.\r \r Dr. Maclean & Dr. Cheema, & Angela are great! more

They don't follow AAHA guidelines for canine vaccines 7/26/2008

If you think your vet should follow the guidelines for treatment recommend by the AAHA and US veternarian medical schools, don't bring your dog here. For example, my new puppy received a combo vaccine here which included giardia. Well, the AAHA latest guidelines for vaccine recommendations says the giardia vaccine is not recommended (among others)! Why? because it doesn't prevent giardi according to published studies. Read here: http://www.aahanet.org/resources/guidelines_canine.aspx\r They do this just to make a buck - they don't follow common sense or good practice when treating pets. There are other vaccines as well like leptospirosis- which they will talk you into and which is noncore or not required. No they won't tell you this, or explain this to you.\r Further, my dog has come down with giardia twice since getting this vaccine from VCA which he didn't need and is not recommended.\r I would use extreme caution when taking my pet to a vet who doesn't follow the latest guidelin more

VCA - creative vets/team approach 7/25/2008

I have been using VCA since 2004. I adopted a dog who was (unknown to me) found to be terminally ill. The vets and staff treated her with so much care. They said 6-8 weeks left. With their research and willingness to try different therapies, she was comfortable for another 8 months. I appreciated the collaborative way they worked for this dear girl. My next dog had a torn ligament which we got a good surgery referral and the VCA vets followed up with me to make sure it all went well. On balance, they are not cheap, but I've never had a problem getting into the office. more

Wonderful! 7/10/2008

I don't know which hospital the bottom people went to. But VCA OLD TOWN was great!! All of the girls in the front were just as nice and helpful the names I belive are Angela & India. Also I thought the doctors took extra care in treating my dog, They were also very informative and nice. \r Sincerly! more

Don't recommend VCA 7/3/2008

Went there for my new puppy. The vet (we saw a couple over the course of the puppy shots) insisted on many different foods, treats, and procedures which were overly expensive and not needed. I had the same experience of not being super wealthy, yet having all these charges thrown at me on my bill. For instance, an assistance charged me $30 to show me how to put drops in my puppies ears - which was ridiculous since I clearly can do this myself and don't need to be charged to be shown!!!! And it was an assistant, not the vet. Anyway, for three months worth of puppy vaccines/food/treatment I spent around $1500. I will never go back there. more

Horrible Experience! 9/19/2007

The staff at this hospital is so rude and uncaring. the only exception was the receptionist Jessica who was very nice. Doctor Pohl treated me like I was an idiot! They really get you by charging for every possible thing they can. When I tried to explain that I am a recent graduate who is job searching and doesn't have a lot of money, she tried to make me feel bad for not having all kinds of money to do this unnecessary tests! She didn't listen to a word I said and then repeatedly kept telling me that I really needed to do this for my pets health. Lady do I need to spell it out for you....I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY! She talked to me like I was a little kid, who was dumb or something. Not to mention when I picked up my dog from being kennelled there. One of the technicians said to me "oh your here to pick up "my dog" ". When I said yes, she proceeded to laugh hysterically. When I asked why she was laughing she said "oh nothing" and then every time she looked at me started to crack up again. more
