I LOVE this place! I moved away for 3 yrs and couldnt wait to get back to shop. I have found so many treasures over the years. more

People who make a negative remark about this Thrift Store City on Victory Boulevard in Portsmouth, VA need to spend more time in their ""Ivory Palaces"" and less time in the BEST thrift store in Portsmouth!!! Thrift is Thrift!!! You still didn't pay the ""NEW"" price of any item you purchased! And if you don't like the store, then WHY do you keep coming back???!!! If you're a ""dealer"" of any kind, then you are only trying to rip someone else off at another time! And the ladies (Linet) behind the counters??? They are the best.!!! If you want to shop where you are NOT helped, then go to Home Depot! Of course, you all have a right to your own opinion. Here's mine and it's pretty darn accurate!!! :) more

It's not just the Chesapeake store the Norfolk store is just like it. I absolutely agree with comments made on this store. I think store owners might get the picture if we stop spending money. I didn't want to rate this store at all. more

WHOEVER PRICES THE MERCHANDISE DOES NOT KNOW THE MEANING OF THRIFT, WHEN THERE ARE ITEMS ON THE SHELF THAT HAVE THE ORIGINAL PRICE ""NEW"" OR ITEMS FROM THE DOLLAR TREE THAT HAVE MUCH HIGHER THAN ORIGINAL, SOMETHING IS WRONG. CAST IRON? FORGET IT . I CAN PURCHASE NEW CHEAPER AND NOT HAVE TO CORRECT PREVIOUS MISUSE. SOME ITEMS ARE PRICED RATIONALLY BUT MANY ARE NOT. DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF THRIFT SHOPPING FOR THOSE OF US WHO CANNOT AFFORD FULL RETAIL. more

They really need to get rid of the bad employees there and get more who actually do their jobs, including management! There are some good employees there but there are some lazy inconsiderate ones there too. more

This is a terrible store, filthy, there are several rude and hateful employees (younger african american cashiers!) Also they never keep anything on the floor. The manager wouldn't even tell me the price of a item, he told me that I couldn't buy it because they didn't price it yet..umm..ok.. so why is it on the shelf with everything else to buy? How ignorant. more

My mother in law was just fired from here about a week ago, no reason what so ever. They didn't even call her to tell her before she made the hour and 10 minute drive to work, she put her purse in the assigned lockers, clocked in then went to get her assigned department for the day. That is where the 'manager' Joe told her 'we have to let you go', no warning at all. No reason either, she has been there for almost three years, and has been a great employee unlike some rude obnoxious lazy ones whom work there (like 50% of them, not all Zena, the manager Dave and Rosie are very very nice and considerate). They fired her because her vacation pay was due at the end of this month and quite frankly they didn't want to pay her $300+ that was due, so about a week before it was owed to her they fired her! Then they preceeded to throw a tantrum and managed to get the unemployment benefits denied! We are appealing that ruling now, it is sad how this place has went downhill. Basically since Joe was hired as Manager, that's when it started to plumet. I have been going here since I was two years old, now I am 24. It is true what Christine wrote below about them not getting raises, she worked here for almost three years and never got a raise. They told her the same thing 'we believe an employee or employees are stealing from the store so we cannot afford to give anyone a raise'. Ridiculous! If they had a negative star button below I wouldn't hesitate to assign that. That store really needs a overhaul of management (besides Dave). more

If you ever walk into this store, it is like a sweat shop, I am not kiddding, I wish I was! The managers do nothing but walk around and talk and text on their phones all day and let their cashier or floor personel friends do the same. While everyone else there works their a$$es off and only gets paid $7.25 an hour. After reading the following review I have to ask, where is our money going? The employees don't get but 7.25 an hour, then overhead fee's, the store is always packed so no question on it making good money. I guess it is going to the managers and to the owner. SWEAT SHOP at it's worst. When I walk in there it feels like it's a slave house. more

Everyone there minus a cashier/stocker Leslie and the manager (I use this very loosely) Joe are fine. They are the only problems there, I have been shopping here since it opened and have a few good friends whom work there and there are great people working there whom are very courteous, EXCEPT Leslie and Joe. Joe is very very rude and borderline racist. He thinks being the manager makes him better than anyone else I suppose,which is a big joke. This store would be so much better if they let him go, call ahead of time to see if he isn't there before you go. Or leslie either since she wanted to proceed to slam the door on my nieces face whom was carrying a infant child in her arms!, then it is a great store to go to. I have seen to many people be fired since he started his reign there just so he could hire his good friends to take their place. Also do you know that no employee there minus the managers, have gotten any raises in over two years? They claim a employee is stealing there and that is the reason, well they have camera's. CATCH that person then give the good employees a raise, working for 7.25 is ridiculous for anyone over 19. It is just a story so they don't have to give them raises, and they also screw the employees out of their vacation pay and then later unemployment benefits! My sister-in-law works there and it just happened yet again to a friend of hers and it was all Joe's doing. GET RID OF JOE, he is incompetent and just drags the store further down. more

I have been going to this TSC for over fifteen years now, as well as my children and my husband. They have great prices, great clothes, toys, furniture, collectibles, electronics, employees and management. I have saved thouands of dollars, and have met many new great people from shopping here. I have been to the one in Norfolk as well, but I like the service at this one better. Do not let these two people stop you from checking it out, they sound awfully familiar don't you think? I believe it is the same person. Pros: Great deals, great employees, great variety of items to buy Cons: they are usually packed, which is understandable of course more

I think that the portsmouth thrift store is the best around I find great itenms at a very low price ans spend 40 dollars or more per day...I spend a lot of time in this store and know these employees by name, they are very helpful and are no way rude....I've seen so many customers come in act foolish and the managers,supervisors and floor associates handle them in a very professional manner. The customers come in and demand discounts or even steal and change prices on items. Maybe that's the reason for the bad reviews. In my opinion its a privilege to shop at thrift store city and prices are way more fair there then at any other thrift store in town. I agree with the stores logo ""miss a day,miss a deal"". I just cannot get over the FACT that employees are allowed to be so rude to customers. I even had one employee say that she could ""Talk to whomever, however I want, I work here"" well if that is the type of person you want working in your store it's a wonder you are even open. How is that again, that's right, because of the customers, huh, well you keep treating the customers all the same, and they will start to not come back and you will not sell as much stuff and someday you may have to close because you allowed your employees to be so rude to customers. I used to shop at this store and while they do have some good prices, their customer service is some of the worst I have ever encountered. I wanted to purchase some furniture, and when i asked the manager/owner? before I paid for it if someone would help me load it I was rudely told ""GIVE ME YOUR RECEIPT AND TICKETS"" I tried to be pleasant and said I haven't paid yet, I wanted to know if someone is available to help me load. To which the really rude guy( and rude is being nice) said ""I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR STUPID QUESTIONS, READ THE TICKET"". I was totally mortified that someone would speak to me this way so I left, and haven't been back. I understand you have to take the ticket up to the register and pay, I just had a question, which i would think a business would be more than happy to take 2 seconds to answer. I guess not. They get a bad rap sometimes from people who don't take the time to actually look at what they're buying.I've been going to this store for quite a few years and never really had a major problem.The prices are good,and the merchandize is in good shape.In a time when money needs to be stretched to the max,this is a good place to start.The shoe prices are the lowest around and in the best shape.Have fun there you won't be dissapointed. more

I purchased a product there that was clearly marked 2 Drapes. Got them home and it was a table cloth with two tie-backs. Not only was it mis-marked, the two tie-backs were deceptive. You don't use tie backs on a table cloth. So, the product was a complete deception. Store owners comments - buyer beware - I have been to court 5 times and have won everytime and hung up. So, it appears I am not the first who has experienced this store's lack of care of the consumer. No refund even if it is their fault. more
