stop!!! Before you make a reservation 5/16/2007

Three on Fourth not what I expected. We were excited to go because our friends reccomended it. They said they had a nice time, to order the toro and cod, and that the waitress they had was extremely knowledgable of the food and especially the wine. So you can see why we were so interested in going. Not often you get the complete package. So here it goes NOBODY was there, The accoustics are terrible, Not a place to have a private or even a quiet conversation. First we were greeted by a hostess that seemed she had too many glasses of wine, (only because she had a glass of wine at her host desk), we were promptly seated due to the open tables, breifly had the menu explained to us and greated by our waitress. I'm sorry from here it just turned worse. The waitress had NO idea about the food or wines. They also have sake which my friend wanted, which the waitress had no idea about either all she said was it was ""good"" to everything. We asked what they were known for; she responded to a quiche that was on the menu and some other items, food I would not order esp. for dinner. Where are the side dishes that normally come with your entree? I noticed one entree ranges from $30.00 to $40.00 and you get little on the plate, you have to order your side which puts another $10.00 to $20.00 on your ticket alone. I thought this restaurant was supposed to be more eclecctic than this, but seemed more French than anything with french servers as well. The decore is so not French everything is Gray; which is a little confusing. The whole dinner was confusing all the way down to the menu, everything meshed together. In the end you end up ordering WAY to much and spending a small fortune to leave dis-satisfied with horrible service and a bit like you have been takin advantage of. I know L.A. has pricey restaurants, and I really like dining at them but honestly I want to enjoy the food/service I am paying close to $200.00 for!! Goes under my top 5 worst restaurants in L.A.- Never again! Pros: parking close Cons: food, service, too much $$$ for what you get more

Wow!! Best restaurant in Santa Monica! 3/21/2007

I took my parents to 3 on Fourth last night for dinner after I read all the great reviews on Citysearch, and WOW!! This place is fantastic! I had the sweet-potato fries, a gourmet cheeseburger, and the Maytag blue cheese, honeycomb dessert, all of which were scrumptious! My parents loved their fish dishes, as well. Our waiter Mike was delightful, knowledgeable and highly attentive, and the atmosphere was lovely. Not only will I go back regularly, but I intend to give them a rave review in the magazine for which I write. Now, if they just took the fois gras off the menu, they'd be a PERFECT 10! Comes highly recommended folks. Bon appetit! Pros: Unique & delicious food, Great service, Lovely atmosphere, Parking lot next door Cons: Irresponsibly serve fois gras more

Half price wine night! 3/8/2007

I really like this place the menu ranges across a number of different cuisines, food is above average, the wine list is varied and reasonably priced. Service is acceptable although a little slow on busy nights, the real kicker is Monday nights though, half price wine night, several bottles wind up selling for below retail. Pros: Wine list, varied menu, cheap parking next door Cons: nothing major at this price point more

Bad on so many levels 3/6/2007

1. Acoustics make the restaurant extremely noisy.\r 2. Food was brought out 90 minutes after we ordered - not even the appetizers. The excuse they gave was the kitchen got backed up with orders. The place was about 50% full at the time we ordered (4 of us). \r 3. The kitchen managed to mess up our orders. The tuna/ahi salad is horrendous - 2 big chunks of poor quality tuna in soy sauce and limp salad leaves.\r 4. No valet parking available.\r 5. Terribly overpriced for mediocre food. Entrees ranged from $27-32 and did not include any side dishes. \r \r The service staff was nice, but after waiting so long for the food, we should have be comped something. If the management was better, they would have thought of this.\r \r Pros: in Santa Monica Cons: Food, wait, noise more

Food, Service, Wine***Best in Santa Monica 10/19/2006

I've eaten here close to 15 times. I've never been dissapointed. Simply stated, the food is amazing, the service the best in town and the ambience just plain cool. I hear that they are opening for lunch soon; great news, can't wait! Pros: Service, Food, Wine Cons: Wish they were open for lunch already! more

Nothing to Lose and Everything to Gain for 3 on 4th 8/25/2006

A first date and I decided to not wait for a table at the Boarder Grill. Throwing chance to the wind with nothing to lose, we stumbled across the street and into 3 on 4th. We were first attracted by the small menu and the minimalist chic gray interior that looks like Restoration Hardware done right. Our attraction did not stop there. At first, I was taken aback by the high energy with which the hostess greeted us. This was quickly dismissed. She gave us our choice of tables, pointing out the better one. She quickly let us know her favorites on the menu. The more we talked the closer we felt to her. Excitement about food is contagious. The warm and friendly service continued with our server who allowed us to try a few wines before selecting the perfect one for our meal. She gave us hints on what was best on the menu- reiterated by the hostesses. The menu changes daily so it is good to have the inside track. We followed their recommendations to a t. We chose a combination of tapas and a main course: celery soup with creme fraiche and chantrelles, followed by incredible crispy scallion pancakes topped with dill creme fraiche, smoked salmon and roe, which were pearlescent fireworks in the mouth. We then continued with the big seller, grilled stake with a blackberry and port reduction sauce, which was off that night but still good. Following, a whole white fish stuffed with rosemary and fried. The meat was so tender it fell off the bone. The dessert we were recommended was fresh cherries in a cheesecake-esque tart with a lavender creme fraiche sauce. Cherry juice popped in the mouth. There is everything to gain for 3 on 4th. Soon, we wont be able to get in the door. The self-trained chef is destined to have celebrity status within the next few years. The food, ambiance and service were a perfect setting for a romantic evening. I cant wait to go back, hopefully with the same date. Pros: Serive, daily menu, wine list more

best fries,cod and salad 8/14/2006

This is a great new place there is something for everyone. The small plates are great to share if you can part with any and you get to have alot of variety. The tuna salad was too good to share and the fries you can't stop eating. Tried alot of the dishes on menu nothing we didn't like and even ate dessert the poached pears were delicious.\r The staff is great very accomdating and helpful overall it was a great dinning experience. The decor is great love the big table in the middle inviting for those dinning alone. Great new place will definetly go back. Pros: great food lots of variety more

Best Burger In Town! 8/1/2006

After trying a few really good fish dishes (the cod is really tasty), I decided to try the hamburger that everyone's been talking about. I'm not a big fan of red meat so I wasn't expecting to enjoy it but it was amazing! I've been dreaming of eating another hamburger at Three on Fourth since then. The French cheese, the wild boar bacon, everything about it is just delectable. Great atmosphere, very friendly and knowledgeable staff, it's perfect! more

SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO LA MAG' REVIEW 7/29/2006

I WAS REALLY EXCITED TO CHECK OUT THIS NEW PLACE, CONSIDERING THE PREVIOUS PLACE (ROCCA) BEING SO SUCCESSFUL, HOWEVER, IT WAS A HUGE DISAPOINTMENT. THE CONCEPT IS COOL HAVING THREE DIFFERENT CUISINES BUT IT WAS REALLY DIFFICULT TO FIND SOMETHING I WANTED TO HAVE. WHEN I DID FINALLY ORDER, NOT ALL OF MY FOOD CAME. THE SERVER WAS APOLOGETIC, HOWEVER THEY SEEMED OVERWHELMED. IF IT WERE BUSY THERE, THEN I WOULD UNDERSTAND OVERSIGHT, BUT IT WAS DURING THE WEEKEND AND THE PLACE WAS QUIET, WITH A FEW TABLES, AND LACKED OVERALL ATMOSPHERE. I MAY BE MISTAKEN BUT I THOUGHT I SAW A MEMBER OF THE KITCHEN STAFF SMOKING OUT FRONT, LATE IN THE EVENING, WHEN WE WERE LEAVING, SANITARY? I FELT THAT HEAVY DISHES OUTWEIGHED HEALTHY, OPTIONS WERE LIMITED FOR HEALTH CONSCIOUS DINERS, AND THE CONCEPTS SEEMED TO BE ITEMS THAT ARE ALOMST COPIED VERBATEM FROM OTHER MENUS, WHETHER JAPANESE OR FRENCH. IF I WANTED SUSHI, I WOULD GO TO A SUSHI RESTAURANT. MAYBE THEY SHOULD JUST SERVE THEIR BURGER, IT SEEMED TO BE THE SAFEST OPTION. THE MUSIC NEXT DOOR WAS LOUD AND VIBRATED THROUGH THE WALLS, AND DISTRACTED CONVERSATION AND OVERALL EXPERIENCE. I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO THE LA MAG' REVIEW AND NOT WASTED MY TIME OR MONEY. IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE AMATEURS. Pros: FRIENDLY STAFF Cons: FOOD, VALET, AMBIENCE more

This place really Cooks! 7/11/2006

According to the hostess, they haven't even had their grand opening yet - I am so glad I found this place NOW because when they do put their name out there this place is going to EXPLODE!\r Really impressive menu - french bistro classics (but up-dated and with a twist - Moules in a Geuze Beer sauce, for example, was delicious) & Steak Frites (Sauce Brune- mmm!) - choice of 2 cuts. \r 5 friends and I came across this place by accident last Saturday (tired of our standard haunts) and were seated at the marble high table in the centre of the action - it got busy after 9pm so we lucked-out with our seats.\r We ordered just a couple of things to start - Mac and Cheese and Sweet Potato Fries from the ""American Classics"" page, with our various wines and really inventive list of beers - after they arrived and we tucked in, we quickly ordered just about everything on the menu! Mac & cheese was awesome - 3 types of cheese and loads of pancetta w/ farfalle macaroni plus a great crispy top - the way it's meant to be!\r Smoked Salmon over vegetable pancake with Creme Fraiche and Ikura was easily the winner in our group - but others enjoyed the Crab Cakes (were those really pieces of walnut inside?!? next time I'll ask - but it really worked) and Chicken Wings with Blue Cheese sauce and hot sauce on the same plate - cut creatively so that they can be eaten without sauce dripping! Fries were so very good - pleased to see house-made mayonnaise served alongside; belgian-style!\r Main plates were equally satisfying - the burger was gargantuan - but everybody finished - great cheeses inside plus arugula and caramelized onions (really caramelized - no short cuts here!) The Halibut special was in a sublime potatoe puree tempered with truffle oil - please put this back on the specials menu!\r Clafoutis astounded, figs not sweet enough, cabernet sorbet a delight - we stayed over 2.5 hours (wish the music had been a little louder) and check was less than expected! Pros: Great menu, friendly staff, relaxed & informal atmosphere Cons: Expand the menu please! more

Open 6 weeks and already highly rated by Zagat 7/8/2006

I believe I was there the same night as ""foodiewino"" and need to correct him or her on a few things. Fish: not only did they have tuna and cod, but salmon and halibut both flown in that morning from Alaska. I had the halibut, by the way, and it was very tasty and my server paired it with a delicious white wine which I wish I could remember because we went through two bottles and loved it. I understand it's Santa Monica, but you don't want fish that was caught off the pier, do you? As for the wine list, my friends and I were a bit put off by it because it seemed rather pretentious for a casual/tapas restaurant. And when I asked by server about the list I was told that they weren't very familiar with the list and hadn't had the opportunity to taste any of them or learn about them, but that this situation was being remedied now that there was a new manager in place who was more familiar with running a restaurant and not just building a wine list that was a bit out of touch. I don't mean to rant, but my friends and I just had such a good time at 3 that I couldn't let someone who OBVIOUSLY has a grudge to bear say things that were in bad form and all together misleading. more

Here today gone in a few months 7/7/2006

Is this tapas? If so say it. No real direction on the menu, and limited at best. I had to go over the menu many times and force myself to find something. Cod and Tuna, the only fish? Boring! This is santa monica, we're next to the ocean! No valet! Next to harvells (great blues bar), so don't dine after 9:30 unless you like hearing bass booming through the walls. Interesting and fun wine list, but servers can hardly explain the glass pours, let alone bottles. Very cold atmosphere with no art. Desserts (that's spelled with two s's) are good, but I don't dine for desserts. Great Beer and Sake list but again, no one knows what is what . At least know your booze before youopen a place. I give it a 3 to 4.....out of 10. more

Best Figs in the World! 6/16/2006

Yes, the menu does take a couple of minutes to decipher, but really it's a small learning curve for great rewards; and besides why rush when you get to sit in the cushy booths and enjoy the romantic soft glow of the place? Fries are fantastic and also the croquettes (careful though--the sauce is SPICY, I didn't use too much of it); great spin on the classic burger (my boyfriend who is the pickiest eater and hates to deviate from the norm actually loves it), and the cod (as was all the fish-- the salmon with the veggie pancakes are so good) was so fresh! But the best is really the warm figs for dessert--to die for! (the poached pears run a VERY close 2nd)... but the figs are seasonal so get there earlier in the evening if you don't want to miss them! Oh and I forgot-- they have Young's Chocolate Stout! You can't find that anywhere! amazing. more

Hidden Gem 6/14/2006

I have been religiously eating at 3 on Fourth for the past year. This place is a hidden foodie secret! The dishes are all amazing...toro tartare, truffle potato puree, scrambled eggs with uni (sea urchin) and black truffles..ummm. I highly recommend trying this place before you can't get a reservation anymore! Can't seem to get enough... Pros: The Entire Menu, Cheese Plates, Half price wine on Mondays (Hello!!) more

THREE ON FOURTH 6/13/2006

WARM, FRIENDLY & EFFICIENT. GREAT TUNA TARTARE & SALMON WITH CAVIAR APPETIZERS. STEAK & FRITES, A CUT ABOVE THE TRADITIONAL BRASSERIE SERVING. HAMBURGER IS JUICY, PLUMP & RARE, A MUST FOR HAMBURGERS LOVERS. TRY THE FIG WITH ICE CREAM FOR DESERT. IT'S A WINNER. A WINE MENU SURE TO PLEASE EVERYONE EVEN THE MORE SOPHISTICATED PALATE AT REASONABLE PRICES. more

An Eclectic Menu for an Eclectic City 6/13/2006

Given that my friends can never agree on what to eat, Three, takes a smart and bold approach to its open menu and wide variety of sake, wine, and beer. One can see much thought was taken to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for dinner or just to hang and drink. \r \r I was never a fan of cod before, yet I am now, especially with the Chimay on draft. The crab cakes are the best Ive had in a long time aswell. more

GREAT NEW RESTAURANT! 6/12/2006

I love this place! Great food, cool ambience, extensive wine and beer list. Best burger in town, hands down! more

Great New Place 6/6/2006

The wine and beer selection is extensive. Never have i seen my favorite wine (a rose from south africa) and beer (choclate stout from longdon) in the same place. I had the steak frite with sweet potatoe fries...sooo good. The brune sauce was amazingly falvourful! Also, we shard a bunch of the toppas and they were equally good. Reminds me of a new fussion. Great JOB!!!! Pros: hot waitresses and celebrities more

User review by marialosch 6/4/2006

I like the variety of choices on the menu. It makes it easy if one friend is in the mood for a cheeseburger and some else wants tuna tartare. Love the decor and look forward to seeing this restaurant fine tune and flourish. more

Great Space - Confusing Menu 6/3/2006

Food is decent. Nothing stands out on the menu. The larger entres should be in bold. Also the restaurant's theme should be explained at the beginning of the menu. The staff comes across as a bit pompous. Kudos to the designer though. more
