My girlfriends and I stop in from time to time and treat ourselves to some delicious chocolate..we feel guilty together, but the place is just too darn cute delicious, and fun!! ...

Worst

I don't know about this Alabama location, but when went to this new place located at Rice village, I wasn't very happy with the service I got. The price tag for the cherries I was...

Chocolate chocolate and more chocolate 3/11/2008

Stopped in during a girls night out. We were doing a progressive meal and completely were satisfied with the dessert here. Part of the shop is a little store and the other side is a little cafe type section. It was a bit crowded but it was also Saturday. The girls and I all shared and after trying the rocky road, mint, smore, and oreo cake, I was happily satisfied. Every single cake we tried was excellent. We also all left with a bag in hand and goodies inside. Kids will love it, it can be a date spot or a spot to drop by and pick up a dessert before going home. Do yourself a favor and try this place. You will not be disappointed. more

Not Good Chocolate 10/12/2007

I am a lover of all things chocolate and what I found here is among the worst tasting I have tried. There has got to be better in Houston somewhere. I am sure the ice cream or cake is good but I didn't get any after tasting the chocolate. No thanks. more

Houston's Hidden Treasure 9/26/2007

My girlfriend and I found this little spot in the Houston Press and made our way to it as soon as possible. The staff was patient and attentive as we took our time trying to see what to get. So many choices! I've been to speciality chocolate stores all over the country, but this place was the best! The Chocolatte drink was to die for! I'm thinkin about going back this afternoon! Everything in the store was well worth the price and I was even able to buy some treats for my dog..which he loved! Bring a date, bring the kids...whatever you do...you must go to this place! Pros: Friendly and helpful staff, world class chocolate Cons: Parking, Parking, Parking more

The best!!!!! Great for a girls night out! 9/19/2007

My girlfriends and I love to frquent this dangerous pplace when we are in the need for some tlc. Pros: Chocolate! Cons: Chocolate! more

Great chocolate 8/8/2007

For those that think it's overpriced maybe they should remember the place is called chocolate bar so that must mean they specialize in chocolate!! Who has even been to a specialty store that wasn't a little pricey. Really?!?!? Pros: Great chocolate, ice cream and cakes Cons: parking...parking...parking more

Obscene 7/31/2007

Here you will pay top dollar for dessert that no human should eat. Only in Houston would you find a place that overcharges because people seem to think that the ultimate in dessert means enough calories for an entire day packed into one slice of cake, cup of hot chocolate, OR cone of ice cream. I love dessert, and I love decadent, chocolatey cakes, and all that, but the desserts here actually make me feel sick if I finish one. It's good at the first bite, but if you can't eat one without feeling sick, they're doing something wrong! It's an abomination to have a shop full of desserts, each one so cloyingly sweet, and not have a single item that's appealing because it's made well WITHOUT going overboard! Parking is a nightmare, and they never seem to bother telling you where the line starts. Pros: Selection is diverse, you might enjoy up to three bites Cons: Food makes me sick, way overpriced, at that price point no good selections available more

Amazing ice cream, great chocolate for gifts, a fun place to sit with friends amidst the colorful walls 7/14/2007

I have bought Valentine's, Christmas and birthday gifts in the chocolate shop for years, and was excited when they expanded to include a cute sit-down area for eating cake and ice cream. The ice cream is what draws me and my friends, and while I'm sure the cake is good, I've never had it and don't take out-of-towners there for that. Make sure you take advantage of the fact that you can try as many different flavors as you want before you buy. My favorite is the orange chocolate ice cream, but some of my friends don't like it. I'm huge on chocolate (regular, dark, not white as much), but when someone had me try their lemon white chocolate, I was surprised by how it was different from what I expected and how much I enjoyed it. Their truffle ice cream has real huge truffles in it--it's tough to finish! As you can imagine, if you like chocolate, you'll probably like most of their ice cream flavors. It may have a slightly different vibe from places like Jaques Torres (Brooklyn, New York) and exquisite chocolatiers I've visited in Paris, but I think the chocolate here is pretty good in comparison, and I'm proud to have such a great shop so close to home. Pros: One of the best ice cream shops around, excellent gift choices available Cons: Parking available mostly on side streets when busy, expensive if you're not used to paying more than Blue Bell more

Celebrate Being Awesome at TCB. If you are not awesome, do not go TCB. 1/25/2007

I have no idea how a chocolate shop could be any better. The staff is kind and attractive. The food is amazing. The mint ice creams are especially good. I understand why one might be concerned with the prices; but I saw that Blue Bell was on sale at Walgreen's-- 2 for $7. If you want to eat ice cream at home or in the Walgreen's parking lot, out of a tub & in bulk, take advantage of the savings. The Chocolate Bar is a Houston hotspot. Anyone who thinks it is a candy store is really missing the point. I have been probably 50 times & have never been let down. Park on a side street so you don't have to worry about backing out on West Alabama. Pros: unmatched in houston Cons: parking is tricky more

Overpriced!!! Not Recommended! 1/3/2007

My husband and I went to the Chocolate Bar for the first time last weekend on a Friday Night, only to find out that it is not at all like I had heard it was! The cakes are totally over priced!, ($6.95 per slice) and over rated!, and they are not even big slices! I am a desert and chocolate freak and I have eaten desert just about all over Houston, if I ever got a slice of cake for $6.95 for sure it was a pretty big piece!, but not at this place!!! They do not offer good coffee either, only regular or decaf brewed coffee, no expresso machine! The service also was not that good either, you can not get even a glass of water! They have a water fountain by the restrooms where you can get some water or else buy some!, and not to mentioned parking!, it is terrible specially on a weekend night!!! After spending $20.00 for 2 slices of cake (that was not bad but not great either) and 2 cups of brewed coffee, I will never go back again! I definitely do not recommend this place at all! Cons: Overpriced cakes! No parking! Bad Service! No specialty coffees! more

very good, almost worth the price 12/4/2006

I love the Chocolate bar, the staff are rely nice, and the chocolate is great. but the price is just a little expensive. otherwise it is worth it to go here. Pros: best chcolate Cons: little expensive more

extensive dessert choices! 11/23/2006

quaint and cute, it is a gem snuggled off of shepherd and alabama ... a real find that is definitely a pleasant sweet tooth experience. there are every imaginable assortment of sweets that they offer, you wouldn't know where to begin! love the fun-loving ambience ... like having a flashback to your childhood. a great idea: fun after dinner date place to go.* Pros: extensive assortment of chocolate and desserts, ambience, cute, location Cons: parking! more

go for the chocolate, stay for the ice cream 11/12/2006

The chocolate is GREAT for gifts, but treat yourself with the homemade ice cream. The cakes are huge, but expensive and are outsourced from the Dessert Gallery, so go there for a cake fix. Besides, everyone gets the ice cream anyway. Open late, and always busy from 8pm to close. Not a whole lot of parking out front, try the side streets (easier to get out of). Smell selection of sugar free chocolate, but only bonbons. They have coffee and milk to go along with their cookies, too. As for the negative review below about offending their children's delicate sensibilities, forget it. No one likes bratty kids, but they can do get togethers/semi parties for people of all ages. This is not Willy Wonka you're talking to. Very friendly place, because who hates chocolate? Pros: good for late night, open late Cons: parking more

I MISS IT!! 10/26/2006

I left Houston a few years ago after grad school and am back in California, but every now and then I get a wistful feeling for the Chocolate Bar...I loved the ice cream the most. more

dreamy, creamy candy store will turn you into a chocolate junkie! 9/20/2006

People have been telling me about this place, and the candy store next-door, since I moved to Houston. So.... I dragged my new husband there the other afternoon and what a treat! The first thing you notice is the divine smell of chocolate, and the next thing is the bright colors of the decor. Very fun, eye catching and funky! Lot's of parents with their children but all were well behaved. Great, peppy music fills the store and the staff is so friendly. They showed us all the little chocolate ""toy"" items, which we bought as gifts for my nephew. What a great place to get things for a child's birthday party! I had some decadent chocolate ice cream and my husband had a creamy slice of dark, dense layer cake. I am a good baker but this cake was so amazing that I'm not sure how they achieved it! (Magic?!) We will be back.... Pros: everything Cons: hard to park a large SUV more

Must Have Aunt Etta's 9/18/2006

I know there is more there... but... I... must... have... Aunt... Etta's! more

Kids at the Chocolate Bar 7/24/2006

I must first start by saying the Chocolate Bar is one of the most creative and amazing places I have ever been. The chocolate is great, workers are friendly and the ice cream is to die for! But I have to say something about the review posted about the lady who brought her children and believes she was treated rudely. Pros: Chocolate, Ice Cream and Cake... oh my! more

a standout in the emerging cultural mecca of Houston 7/8/2006

I was at The Chocolate Bar the first week they opened and followed its growth with the additions of the dessert gallery and then the candy boutique next door. As a certified chocolate and dessert junkie I can say this place eclipses most any I've experienced anywhere. This is including NYC and San Francisco. Having moved to L.A this is at the top of my list of places genuinely missed. While L.A has to have the market on healthy sweets including chocolates not sweetend with refined sugar, The Chocolate Bar reigns above pretty much everything and anything. This is worth blowing your diet for. The spirit needs a little indulgence every now and then. If you're feeling decadent or wanting to stray from all that is Macro-biotic this is your place. Go all the way and get a piece of cake top it with the White chocolate chip icecream and then get a bag of the mixed chocolate(dark, milk and white)chips and dump it on top. If you're looking to go out in a blaze of a sugarholic rush this will do the trick. I miss you Gilbert, Brit and Joannie, anyone thinking of a move to L.A? Pros: unmatched variety, creative ideas for ice creams Cons: Parking is dismal and hours need to be extended more

Bring Your Kids! 6/25/2006

A treat for adults, but also my six-year old loved it! Along with five additional little children (ages 1 - 9). They were all delighted and over the moon. Pros: Wonderfully delightful Cons: parking more

great birthday! 3/20/2006

i had the best birthday! i was sent a cake from the chocolate bar and it was beautifl! perfect cake! great chocolate too!!!!!!! very happy. Pros: creative, yummy, good location Cons: needs another, location more

gourment apples 11/17/2005

I preordered a gourment apple dipped in carmel, chocolate and nuts. It was huge and wonderful. The staff there is so friendly and helpful. Pros: atmosphere, variety, helpful staff Cons: parking more
