I would have expected the elitist attitude of Silvertone's hostess ""Mo"" to come from an exclusive, upscale restaurant in New York City, NOT from a place like Silvertone's. She w...

If you're Gay stay away ah come on... 1/6/2007

Initially, I thought not to respond to these dangerous allegations and then reconsidered solely to defuse possible misconceptions of any unsuspecting potential GUEST of Silvertone who might have been infected by this poor review. I say Guest simply because everyone is welcome, everyone! I personally assess individuals according to what they say and do. Not their sexual orientation, gender or religion. After all, words and actions are the only two things we truly own, everything else fades away. And for this reason I must respond, not to you (anonymous writer) but to the public at large. First, let me say to the group who felt comfortable enough to share Silvertone with others, thank you and we will see you again soon. We have more Duval Leroy and will leave a bottle set aside for your next visit. Thank you for the 25% tip and the warm wishes for a Happy New Year. It?s a shame everyone in your party was not as enthused. I hope you chose your company for your New Years festivities well. I trust you had no idea a member of your party, on the evening in question, was capable of calling anyone an ?Idiotic person of color? or insinuate that the couple that approached the bar would stand for an outrageously damming statement from any bartender/person without defending the honor of their guests. And to the most important thing, everyone please be aware of third party information. In the ?He said, She said? game, sometimes people get hurt. All too often, what starts out as one thing quickly turns into something completely different. If your at ?The Tone? and see a flashlight streaming into a crowd coupled with a ?woooo? it means we are highlighting people having fun, dancing or what ever. Not some lecherous act to get a better view of breast. To the guy doing the funky chicken, no harm no foul (pun intended). There it?s all been said. No hard feelings, in fact I was so moved by this event I wrote a song, check it out at myspace/8734808 entitled? If I were you? more

Love us or hate us, not for everyone................... 1/3/2007

Hello to all of you who have supported us for the past 10 years and those we hope to meet in the coming 10. Normally, I would let this sort of thing slide, but these last two reviews need to be addressed. more

Great staff... not haters! 1/3/2007

Listen. I normally would never write a review, but I have to respond to the previous author. This is a very good, laid-back establishment. The staff is great (I am biased- I go here quite a bit). Sometimes the bar is busy, sometimes slow, but never, ever could I imagine anything being said in a prejudicial way.\r Please folks, before writing a review make sure you're not getting info third hand, particularly when making harsh accusations. more

If you're gay, stay away. 12/31/2006

Heard a lot about this place, and was out with friends and we decided to go to Silvertone for drinks about midnight or so. There were 7 of us, and off we went. We were greeted by a ""what the hell do you want?"" sort of look from the 2 bartenders; from what I could tell there were no other employees in the place. A small and sort of sad looking crowd was at the bar, but whatever. We ordered some wine and then sat down at a table, and were basically ignored for the rest of the evening, which was okay, cuz we were having our own fun. Pros: the wine was cheap Cons: atmosphere, bar crowd is sad, service more

A bad experience 12/20/2006

A friend and I went here for the famous mac n' cheese during lunch. When we got there (11:45) the place was empty, but as usual, it filled in very quickly. We were placed at a small two person table in a corner of the back room. Halfway through our meal, the waiter seated a large party of 8 directly next to us at a table suited for four. Once they sat down, their backs were pressed up against our table, their hair was practically in our food, and I was trapped in my seat. The waiter offered no apologies, and as the party was very loud and practically on top of us, we were forced to cut our lunch short. The food here is great and it's the best value around but this is not the first time I have experienced terrible service from them. Definitely give it a try, but know what you are getting into and don't expect good service! Pros: Macaroni and Cheese Cons: Terrible Service more

Cheap comfort food in the heart of Boston 11/22/2006

This place has delicious mac and cheese and meatloaf and is a cheap and tasty find right next to Park Street in the hub of touristy Boston. It can get quite crowded before concerts at the Orpheum, and during these nights service might rush dinners, but besides that, it's a great place for comfort food. Pros: Meatloaf, mac and cheese, salads Cons: Orpheum crowds more

Best deal anywhere 11/13/2006

I love Silvertone, it never disappoints. Start with their homemade raspberry vodka, its delicious, but be forewarned its very sweet. Try the raspberry martini. The mussels are always a great choice, as is the mac and cheese. I almost always order the summer salad with chicken, its always great. The one con is they sort of rush you through dinner. Pros: Raspberry Martinis Cons: Rush you through dinner more

Take it as a good sign: crowded means the food is GOOD. 8/23/2006

I'm assuming the people below who are upset about the ""we won't seat you until your whole party is present"" rule don't eat out much--unless it's a big chain restaurant, this is a pretty standard policy. Given the size of SliverTone, I'm not surprised or bothered by their ""no one can add on to your party once you're served"" rule, either. Sure, it can be annoying if people are meeting up, but it's also a strain on the server and the wait if people keep filing in all night. If you want to do that, go somewhere where you can sit at the bar. Pros: vamped-up comfort food, great wine selection/price, fun atmosphere Cons: small, so could get noisy more

Great place in the city 5/26/2006

I've had good experiences here and will be going again with friends this afternoon. I don't really understand the negative posts below... I think the hostess' request seemed normal - especially when you admitted that you didn't think your 3rd would show. This place does get very busy so I'd agree you don't go here for the service alone. The place is a little funky and retro which is a unexpected based on the corporate surroundings. The food is very good for the price and I, like others, also enjoyed the martinis. Pros: Inexpensive, Good food more

Best mac 'n' cheese in Boston 3/25/2006

Great place for lunch or after-work drinks with friends. The decor is very warm & inviting with its red leather booths and wood seating at the bar area. The cocktails are excellent (the raspberry martini is phenomenal) and I've never seen a better priced wine list in all of Boston... something like $10-15 over retail. As for the food, they have a great selection of salads, sandwiches, appetizers and mains. The food isn't fancy, but you'll get generous portions of delicious homey concoctions like Shepherd's pie, steak tips, calamari, etc. at extremely reasonable prices -- which is why I think it makes for a better than average place for lunch or a great place to grab dinner with lots of people. Yes, it can get extremely crowded (and noisy!) so you may have a bit of a wait, but it's totally worth it... especially for that macaroni & cheese! Pros: comfort food, reasonable prices, good drinks Cons: can get very crowded, a bit noisy, no reservation policy more

Unprofessional Hostess and Disrespectful Service. 3/17/2006

After an exhausted work day, like most Boston professionals, my friend and I were searching for a casual dinner. When we arrived at Silvertone and requested a table for 3, the hostess refused to seat us till the 3rd party arrives. Since we were so hungry and tired and not sure whether the 3rd party will arrive, we told the hostess that only 2 of us will be having dinner. She then told us that if our remaining party shows up later, he will not be allowed to join us. She sat us at a small table, where we ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees immediately. Later, our 3rd party showed up. The hostess came over and scolded at us with the most disrespect I've ever experienced in a restaurant. We didn't want to lower ourselves to her level, make a foolish scene and ruin our evening. Neverthless: DON'T GO THERE. Pros: Cheap food Cons: Poor service, Rude hostess more

DO NOT GO UNLESS YOU HATE YOURSELF 12/5/2005

I'm not one to post comments but something needs to be done about this place. This is the second time I've been to Silvertone-- and the second awful experience I have had. This most recent time, we were told we had to wait for our whole party was present before being seated. Ten minutes later our server/host sat three of us with the stipulation that Silvertone normally does not do this but since it was not crowded would let us in. Four of us ordered drinks, appetizers, and had also placed our entree order when a friend popped in. When we asked for a chair, we were yelled at by the server/host and told that if the place suddenly got busy we would have to leave. Well, we left right then-- the host/server slammed our check on the table and then the manager cooly dismissed us. DO NOT GO HERE. Pros: cheap eats Cons: poor service more

I like the ""tone"" of this place! 11/25/2005

Silvertone's continues to impress, I love this place! From amazing cold lomein noodles, delicious chicken wings, the best mac and cheese in all of Boston, and a grilled cheese that rivals the one served at Delux Cafe (another one of my faves in the South End), you can't go wrong if you can get a table. Arrive early or be willing to wait in an over-crowded hip bar area on busy nights, if you're looking to eat anyways. If you can get a good spot at or near the bar, you won't even remember to order any food, as the bar scene and cocktails make the visit worth it in itself. Silvertone's is platinum in my book, Boston needs more places like this! Pros: inexpensive, amazing food, romantic Cons: over-crowded bar more

Feeling forced out 10/10/2005

We arrived just ahead of the dinner crowd on a Saturday and were seated promptly in a booth. We ordered drinks and the soda in mine was flat, so when I was able to flag down our waiter, I requested another - and waited. And waited. It never came. Our meals arrived and I had to again flag down our waiter, who explained they were trying to fix it and tried to tke off without offering me another drink after 15 minutes had passed. I got a beer, and we enjoyed an excellent meal. The prices are terrific here and the portions don't even skimp. But when we finished our meal and requested another drink it became clear that we were not welcome to stay. No fewer than three people came by to ""clear"" our table and We left half finished beers on the table rather than continue being harassed. Pros: Value, Food, Ambience Cons: Service more

Great casual dining/hanging out spot 3/20/2005

Good food and laidback atmoshphere with hip, but not too hip crowd. The food is basic comfort food, sandwiches, straightforward preparations of meats and seafoods and very good salads. Prices are very reasonable. Definitely recommended. more

Best Calamari in Town 12/17/2004

We love this place. It is consistantly great. Chatted with the owner about how he creates such sublime calamari - we won't tell the secret, you will have to ask him yourself! The one place worth eating at in DTC (Dowtown Crossing). PS: Get there early if you want the roast chicken - it is always sold out by the end of the night! Pros: Food, Drinks, Value Cons: , Crowded more

Down Home Goodness!! 1/17/2003

Best rasberry vodka martini in the city (home made to boot)!! Great chow too! Gets crowded quickly after work so get there early, and the mac and cheese is fantastic. more

FAN tastic! 1/12/2003

The food here is great and its a great place to meet up with friends after work or grab lunch with some co-workers. Mac and Cheese and the Steak tips are a must. more

My vote for Best in Boston! 1/2/2003

This is by far my favorite bar in Boston. The service is friendly, the food is cheap, and they have wonderful drinks- Silvertone is a ""must go"" bar! Pros: Inexpensive, Great Crowd more

Overrated 12/23/2002

Good atmosphere but very poor service and only ok food. Don't see what all the hype is about. more
