Who You Are and How You Live 1/24/2007

We had a terrific experience with the Shelter people. We were looking at an old home in the exact location we wanted, and we knew that if we were going to make it our own, we would need some very good support on a whole-house remodel. Even before we bought the home, we consulted with Shelter to ensure that the rough ideas we were noodling around could become a reality in a home that, frankly, we couldn't stand. The Shelter team listened carefully, focussing not just on WHAT our family wanted, but also on who we were, what we cared about, and how we lived. Looking back on it, that made the remodel process one of discovery -- something we really didn't expect -- and the result is a home that doesn't just look nice, but also simpley works for us. We loved the way the Shelter folks took scraps of ideas from us and turned them into something functional, novel, and affordable. If and when the need for architecture/design comes up for us again, we'll be calling Shelter. more

Friendly, flexible, very knowledgeable, very ""Green"" (concerned with the environment) 1/24/2007

I first heard of Shelter Architecture because of all the work they are doing down in New Orleans, helping out after the flooding. I was looking to find a firm that focused on sustainable architecture, and it turns out that they are the one firm that focuses on that area. They worked with me on my remodeling project and actually LISTENED to what I had to say! All the other architects just had their own ideas of how to remake my windows, but John at Shelter really paid attention to what I was looking for and found some unique solutions. \r \r I recommend Shelter Architecture to anyone, and especially to those interested in ""Green"" architecture. A+!!! Pros: Thumbs WAY up - head and shoulders above everyone else I talked to more

Really Creative, out-of-the box, easy to work with 1/15/2007

In a large remodel project, these guys designed the two key elements and ended up ""ringing the bell"" on both! I asked them for some out-of-the-box thinking on the design of a large aquarium and an ""invisible"" staircase. They spent the time to understand my objectives and really came through with creative approaches. Once we had settled on designs, they worked with me, the builder, and the city to achieve objectives that others had said were not achievable.\r \r I really enjoyed working with Shelter. The people are terrific! I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking for people who are easy to work with and very creative. Pros: Creativity, Problem Solving Skills, Great People Cons: None observed more

Detail, creativity, cooperation...This is your next architect... 1/14/2007

If you want to be included in the design of your project, if you want to partner with your architect instead of being dictated to, Shelter is the right place to go. We feel as though our project is just as important to them, and they really get how involved we want to be. They work well as a team, and seem to truly understand what each of their employees brings to the plate. If you are trying to flesh something out, they will often get on the phone back to the office, to connect with the expert on that certain topic. I love that! Although I know they can do anything, if you are looking to get help with a very special or unique project, that requires artistry, Shelter is a boutique shop, with brilliant and warm folks, who will make you feel a part of the whole process. Don't get me wrong. They will tell you alternatives and urge you to think a different way if they know an idea won't turn out as you would hope. That's why I trust them.\r \r Okay here's the deal... A fireplace on the outside of your home, with some small flat stones sticking out to rest your wine glass or candles on for a special evening... An exact replica of a carriage house, just as it once stood in the 1800's, that causes original family members to make long drives to watch it go back up again... An addition to a home, to expand for a growing family, that melts into the look of your home, and makes you wonder why it wasn't that way originally...\r \r That's Shelter Architecture... Pros: Great People, Great Creativity, Years of Experience more

These guys are so great to work with. They help you define exactly what your needs are and come up with really creative solutions. They are constantly thinking of sustainability issues and really open your eyes to new ways to think about earth friendly design. They offer a wide variety of services from basic interior design issues of color, fabrics, lighting to complete architectural design and site plans. They really have a holistic approach to your home. Pros: Sustainablity experts, creative design solutions Cons: Hard to get on their schedule; seem to be in high demand more
