Misdiagnosed due to incompetence! 3/18/2011

I recently discovered that I was misdiagnosed at Green and Urribarri due to pure incompetence! On February 23rd I had an ultrasound at Green and Urribarri to see if I still had complete placenta previa. The ultrasound tech is someone who is only contracted with the office twice a week. She performed an abdominal ultrasound and informed us that we still had complete placenta previa. She did not point it out or explain it to us, she just told us that and we left. Meanwhile, our next doctor’s appointment with Green and Urribarri was cancelled because we switched to a new doctor due to insurance issues and such (Green and Urribarri was in a price war with Blue Cross Blue Shield and we weren’t sure if they would renew the contract). It wasn’t until our second appointment with the new doctor (Dr. Zafran at Royal Palm OB/GYN) that our records were finally received (lagging issues on Green and Urribarri’s side) and come to find out that the ultrasound tech had also diagnosed us with vasa previa – an accessory lobe connected to the placenta by blood veins crossing over the cervix, though she said nothing. This is a VERY serious condition which often leads to fetal death and as such a c-section is often performed as soon as possible to avoid this. We were 27 weeks at this ultrasound. Dr. Zafran was obviously concerned and ordered a vaginal and abdominal ultrasound at which he wanted to be present to see the results for himself. Firstly, a vaginal ultrasound is much more accurate when looking at the cervix and previa, the doctors at Green and Urribarri should have known and ordered this, or even the ultrasound tech should have known. Secondly, we do not have vasa previa and we have only a slight marginal previa. They pointed this all out to us on the screen and we could see the cervix and placenta and could see that they were right. The ultrasound techs at Dr. Zafran’s are on staff all days. The only guess the ultrasound tech at Dr. Zafran could make was that the tech at Green and Urribarri had her probe backwards when performing the abdominal ultrasound and wasn’t even looking at our cervix! Pure incompetence. What scares us is what would have happened had we stayed with Green and Urribarri. Would they have took her diagnosis at face value and scheduled us in for an immediate c-section around 28 weeks?! The insurance issue was a blessing in disguise. (They now accept our insurance again FYI) We are so lucky we found Dr. Zafran. If you are diagnosed with something serious at Green and Urribarri’s via ultrasound, I highly suggest you get a second opinion. Additionally, Dr. Zafran makes us feel comfortable and like we were priority in a way that none of the Doctors and Green and Urribarri did. Royal Palm OB/GYN seems to care about their patients much more and are not robotic like at G and U. You can do better than Green and Urribarri. more
