I contacted this business at the recommendation of JoAnn's because part of my serger's upper looper had chipped off, making it absolutely unusable. Even though I had already ordered both a new serger and sewing machine through Costco, I decided to call around to see if the part was available somewhere. I was waiting to hear from another place. I wasn't hopeful because the manufacturer had stopped making the part. I simply wanted to know what my options were so I could decide whether to fix the serger to sell it or if I should just sell it for parts. \r
The proprietor of this business wouldn't give me any information over the phone, but he assured me that he could help me if I brought the machine in. I decided to bring my 12 year old sewing machine along as well since I was already making the trip. I was VERY CLEAR that I only wanted free estimates. I explained to him that my sewing machine was old and inexpensive to begin with and that I most likely wanted something with more features. \r
This was a Thursday. Friday was New Years Eve. I called Saturday and was told that both machines had been fixed and that I owed $109 for the serger and $69 for the sewing machine. I was absolutely floored and didn't know how to respond. The new machines I had ordered were on their way and came to $300 so I was paying more than half that amount just to get the old machines fixed. \r
When I tried to calmly explain to the owner that I had only asked for ESTIMATES, he argued with me. Argued with me that I couldn't find a better price anywhere. Insisted that I was lucky to find the part. Even argued with me that I didn't actually want a fancier machine with more features. “They're made with plastic parts. They break. You don't need all those extra stitches. Your button hole maker works fine. Etc.” (My button hole maker is a pain in the ars!) \r
I was so thrown for a loop that I simply told him I would be in on Monday.\r
On Monday, I showed up 20 minutes after opening and nobody was there. So I returned about an hour later. I stood in the cold and rang the bell forever. Finally he came to the door and though my serger was ready, we spent 10 minutes looking for my sewing machine. He finally called a different location and figured out that my sewing machine hadn't been returned yet (apparently they outsource) and he had confused it with a different Kenmore. Told me I would have to come back tomorrow. Did not offer any apology. \r
I told him that if the machine wasn't yet fixed, to please order a halt to it because I only wanted an ESTIMATE to begin with. I didn't want to fix it. He told me they had already started tuning it at the other place and it was too late. (I doubt that was true.) I don't know why he wouldn't just tell me the standard price for a tuning to begin with instead of insisting that I leave the machine with him. I don't think any of it was an accident. \r
I'm not a wimpy person by any means, so I'm not sure why I stood for this bait and switch. The claims tickets both stated that machines not picked up within 30 days will be sold for costs. So I was basically stuck between a rock and a hard place. If I didn't pay, I would be forfeiting them. And emotionally, I don't want to “go to war” with this place. \r
At one point, the guy told me they could “take the machines apart” and return them to me. That seemed threatening. I didn't want to get my machine back in worse condition than it was to begin with. \r
In the very end, he offered me $10 off for having to make 2 trips (actually 3). \r
If I'm lucky, I'll be able to get a few more years out of these machines or maybe I'll be able to sell them. \r
My main complaint is that I was very clear in asking for an estimate and that's what I should have gotten. It really isn't complicated. \r

Pros: None that I can think of.
Cons: Bait and switch. Sketchy looking.
