Editorial review from Citysearch 3/26/2014

Salt Lake Sewing -I've taken my electronic pfaff sewing machine there twice and I appreciate the service I was given. Excellent and honest and straight forward business. Other sewing shops weren't able to fix my machine and Salt Lake Sewing was able to get me sewing again within a week. more

I dropped my machine off on a Wednesday afternoon and called the next day to get a diagnosis. The owner said that it would be ready probably on Saturday but to call ahead. I called Saturday and he said it wasn't ready yet but would be Monday. Picked it up on Monday. The owner even took some time to explain a few questions I had about the machine and order a owner's manual for me. The owner was polite and even joked around a little bit. There was another lady with some kids in the store when I arrived. The owner talked to the kids and gave them a little sucker. He was friendly and talked to me like I am an intelligent human being. The door was open both times I went but another customer was also there. I don't know how much longer this place will be around but I will continue to do business there until it closes. more

Recently I needed to have my sewing machine cleaned and serviced. While looking for somewhere to take it to, I ran across Salt Lake Sewing. I read the reviews and continued looking for somewhere else because the reviews were not very good. Every place I called had such a long waiting time to even get it in, so I read the reviews again. I decided to give it a chance despite the poor reviews.\r \r When I took the machine in on Wednesday, I found exactly what was in the reviews. . . The door was locked with a chain and I had to ring the bell and wait in the cold for a tired, old man to answer the door. Once inside it was totally disorganized (to me), stacked with boxes, machines, and who knows what, with 50 years of dust and grime, a leaking roof, and the horrible odor of cat urine. \r \r The man was somewhat gruff as I filled out my ticket. He told me to call the next day for a quote. I told him that there was nothing wrong other than needing a cleaning. He argued that it was his job to check out the machine and if there was anything wrong he needed to advise me. I reluctantly left the machine.\r \r I called the next day and he told me a hook or something was piited and needed to be replaced. It was inexpensive so I agreed. He told me it would be ready on Monday.\r \r Monday when I picked up the machine I went through the same process of ringing the bell and waiting for him to unchain the door. When I entered the building I asked him how long he had been in business. I found him to have a sense of humor. He smiled and told me he came to Utah with Brigham Young. That would explain all the dust and grime. LOL\r \r On this visit I saw him differently than when I left the machine. I saw a man that had been repairing sewing machines for more than half a century still trying to make a living. As I looked at all the lighting for sale and boxes of who knows what, I found myself wondering what treasures he had stored inside them. He comes from an era where it was wise to save everything because you might need it someday. I saw a spark in his eyes. This man still enjoys fixing sewing machines!\r \r When I examined my machine it was cleaned, repaired and wrapped in plastic to keep it clean. It works like a charm! I know I would recommend him to anyone that asks. \r \r Everyone deserves a second chance. We never know what goes on in the private lives of people. I don't have an aswer for the woman that didn't get her machine back. Maybe his wife died, maybe he had been ill. We all have had times in our careers when we are not at 100%. I am glad that I gave him a chance. He proved that 50+ years of experience makes up for not having a ""clean to my standards"" building. more

I wish I had read these reviews prior to taking my machine in for repair! My experience has been very similar to flyonthewindscreens except I did manage to get my machine back - unfixed! Don't have much more to say basically flyonthewindscreen and amybjorge have said it all. Absolutely the worst experience! Avoid them like the plague! more

I called around to several places trying to find somewhere to get my machine fixed. The proprietor was very friendly and assured me he could fix anything and would give me a free estimate. They seemed like the best option.\r \r First of all, the business itselfs looks so shady and disorganized. I should have just walked away right then. Sewing machines just littered the store and it seemed abandoned. I left him my machine and he told me to call the next day for the estimate. That was the last time I saw my machine.\r \r I have called and called and stopped by trying to get my machine. I don't even care if it is fixed. They NEVER answer the phone, NEVER. I've left 100's of messages that are not returned. I have gotten a hold of him three times and he always has an excuse for why he isn't there. He is rude and will not listen. I'm obviously investigating other methods of getting my property back. Do not use this business, it has been a horrible experience. more

Horrible expereince. 1/4/2010

I contacted this business at the recommendation of JoAnn's because part of my serger's upper looper had chipped off, making it absolutely unusable. Even though I had already ordered both a new serger and sewing machine through Costco, I decided to call around to see if the part was available somewhere. I was waiting to hear from another place. I wasn't hopeful because the manufacturer had stopped making the part. I simply wanted to know what my options were so I could decide whether to fix the serger to sell it or if I should just sell it for parts. \r The proprietor of this business wouldn't give me any information over the phone, but he assured me that he could help me if I brought the machine in. I decided to bring my 12 year old sewing machine along as well since I was already making the trip. I was VERY CLEAR that I only wanted free estimates. I explained to him that my sewing machine was old and inexpensive to begin with and that I most likely wanted something with more features. \r This was a Thursday. Friday was New Years Eve. I called Saturday and was told that both machines had been fixed and that I owed $109 for the serger and $69 for the sewing machine. I was absolutely floored and didn't know how to respond. The new machines I had ordered were on their way and came to $300 so I was paying more than half that amount just to get the old machines fixed. \r When I tried to calmly explain to the owner that I had only asked for ESTIMATES, he argued with me. Argued with me that I couldn't find a better price anywhere. Insisted that I was lucky to find the part. Even argued with me that I didn't actually want a fancier machine with more features. “They're made with plastic parts. They break. You don't need all those extra stitches. Your button hole maker works fine. Etc.” (My button hole maker is a pain in the ars!) \r I was so thrown for a loop that I simply told him I would be in on Monday.\r On Monday, I showed up 20 minutes after opening and nobody was there. So I returned about an hour later. I stood in the cold and rang the bell forever. Finally he came to the door and though my serger was ready, we spent 10 minutes looking for my sewing machine. He finally called a different location and figured out that my sewing machine hadn't been returned yet (apparently they outsource) and he had confused it with a different Kenmore. Told me I would have to come back tomorrow. Did not offer any apology. \r I told him that if the machine wasn't yet fixed, to please order a halt to it because I only wanted an ESTIMATE to begin with. I didn't want to fix it. He told me they had already started tuning it at the other place and it was too late. (I doubt that was true.) I don't know why he wouldn't just tell me the standard price for a tuning to begin with instead of insisting that I leave the machine with him. I don't think any of it was an accident. \r I'm not a wimpy person by any means, so I'm not sure why I stood for this bait and switch. The claims tickets both stated that machines not picked up within 30 days will be sold for costs. So I was basically stuck between a rock and a hard place. If I didn't pay, I would be forfeiting them. And emotionally, I don't want to “go to war” with this place. \r At one point, the guy told me they could “take the machines apart” and return them to me. That seemed threatening. I didn't want to get my machine back in worse condition than it was to begin with. \r In the very end, he offered me $10 off for having to make 2 trips (actually 3). \r If I'm lucky, I'll be able to get a few more years out of these machines or maybe I'll be able to sell them. \r My main complaint is that I was very clear in asking for an estimate and that's what I should have gotten. It really isn't complicated. \r \r \r Pros: None that I can think of. Cons: Bait and switch. Sketchy looking. more
