Best

I love that I can stroll in early for a coffee and some breakfast, and end my day with a glass of wine and some fine chocolate. Pros: everything is delicious Cons: pretty ...

Worst

We had lunch at Papa Haydn and skipped dessert to try Pix only to be disappointed. I had the Jane Avril and my husband had the the Royale. The treats were mediocre and overprice...

Sad, maybe they do need better service 2/20/2008

I've never had anything here but their chocolates and to be honest - the waiter could have been on fire and i'd have not noticed as i was with friends and we were making our own fun. The chocolates were wonderful and unusual. I cannot remember what my friends tried, but they loved everything and i think one of them did in fact have the hot chocolate someone else besmerges on this site. \r \r I've only been to the hawthorne locale and i've found it a fun little corner for a quick sweet treat, but maybe my expectations were not too high more

Like to be abused by waiters? Pix is your place! 1/24/2008

My first (and last) time at pix was an utter disaster. I was so excited to try it out as I had heard great things about their desserts. I went on a date, and we were seated promptly...and then forgotten. When the surly, holier-than-thou waiter finally deigned to notice us, we had been sitting over 30 minutes without even a glass of water. My creme brulee was torched at the table, and while it did have some flair, the end result was burned in most places, but still raw sugar in others. Ick. We had to get up from our table to request coffee after dessert, and when the check was delivered half-way through our cup of coffee, the waiter asked us ""To hurry up and finish because other people were waiting"" Seriously? The only thing slow about our table was the glacial service, and there were only 3 people waiting. No thanks. I'll never return. more

Looks better than it tastes 9/25/2007

The popularity of Pix speaks more to the dearth of good pastries in Portland than anything else. Many of these desserts look the way they should, but are a disappointment when it comes to taste. The Big CherylsGhetto cake was probably the worst thing I have ever had here. It was rubbery, tough, and bland. The Amelie had some very nice flavors of chocolate and orange, but the pieces of praline crisp were a bit of a shock in a jaw-breaker way, because they were huge and hard. This dessert would have been delightful if the praline pieces had been finer, providing a subtle crunch instead of a jolt. The Jane Avril, which includes raspberry mousse and pistachio cake, sounded wonderful, but ended up being quite bland. The presentation here is always wonderful, and I would happily pay the high prices if the desserts lived up to the expectation. Oddly enough, two of my favorite things from pix are the least beautiful. I buy the pixies on a regular basis. The pixie is a pistachio bar with almond paste and raspberry jam. It is simple and delicious. The macarons at pix, especially the creme de cassis ones, give the Parisian ones a run for their money. more

MMmmm and Ahhhh! 9/5/2007

I went in not knowing what to expect. Well actually, I went in expecting great desserts and snobby crappy service. I was wrong about the latter. I didn't get his name, but my friends and I, walked in about the time some police officers where outside asking a man to move on as he was loitering and once we went in, the server was pretty busy. As we were looking at the menu, he was handling some irate teenagers who were angry about something. He was being very apologetic and calm. Turns out these little brats where upset with him because he would serve one of them alcohol with his fake id. \r \r The server was friendly and not worried that we had come in a half hour before closing. He kept a smile and made us feel welcome...as if we were old friends. I go on and on about the service because I find many places here with terrible miserable people giving you a terrible miserable experience. I've been in the service industry for over 15 years, so when I find a place which has a good product AND good service, I make sure to spread the news. If we had gone in and the food was good but the service was snotty, rude, too-cool for school, and such, I would have never gone back. I've just had it with bad service and have made a very black and white stance on the whole issue....even if a place allows even one bad server/barista/cashier...whatever. \r \r Enough about that. The desserts were obviously rocking and thecoffee was excellent. It was expensive. Whatever. You know what you're getting into. I recommend getting vanilla ice cream on your Queen of Sheba Truffle Cake when offered. Will be back! Thanks Awesome Pix Server! Pros: desserts, service, late night Cons: small uncomfortable stools...I don't care how small your butt is more

Good for a quick drink/snack. 8/3/2007

The Division location trumps the Hawthorne one, especially if you can grab a table in the late afternoon. The service is usually good and as long as they're not ""out"" of everything, it's a very pleasant experience to dine here. The beer is particularly good but steer clear of the bacon/ham sandwich; it made me sick later on. Their trademark is the Goat Cheese/Onion Tart and their variety of chocolates, of course. The Shazam isn't bad, either. Overall, good. Somewhat pricey, but good. Pros: Nice tables on Division Cons: Tables can get taken quickly more

Portland's Prettiest Pastries 7/31/2007

Deliscioso treats in abundance. There was so much to choose from eventually you just have to wing it. They nicely pair deserts with liqures and coffees to really round out the evening. Sit indoors or on the sidewalk when the weather is nice. Friendly atmosphere and fabulous suggestions. Pros: Beautiful and Deliscious Cons: Limited Seating more

How Can You Give This Place Less than a Five-Star Rating? 7/13/2007

I love this patisserie. Perhaps, it is because I am obsessed with anything French. Perhaps, it is because the thought of doing nothing, but sitting around all day eating desserts from this place makes me rather content. No, it is because this little gem of a place, w/ its decor and delicacies, is a little jolt of sugar-laden joy. Prices are reasonable for what you get. On summer evenings, there may be a bit of a wait, as the Division location is rather small. But there is a new Williams location, so the problem is solved. more

I like this place a lot 5/17/2007

I never write reviews, but I feel I must defend this patisserie. more

YUM 5/13/2007

I have been to Pix on Division 2 delectable times. The first was after dinner at Lauro across the street and the second was for an afternoon chocolate fix. The after dinner event was wonderful, we had a split of a delicious dessert wine ($15) and berry creme brulee and a uber moist chocolate on chocolate cake. The afternoon event was equally wonderful. I ordered some type of mango wonderfulness and then asked if I could get a hazelnut espresso. My waiter said they didn?t have that on the menu, but would see what he could do. I had no idea he would put hazelnut cream in my espresso to make it lke a dessert upon itself. Pros: a sweet-lovers dream come true Cons: small size more

a delightful night spot 5/12/2007

My favorite spot to meet a friend in the evening. Not usually too crowded, friendly, fun, and with always ""just the right thing"", whether your'e in the mood for a drink, some tea, or a surprising, elegant little dessert. I never feel rushed, and while the pastries are certainly proud of their whimsy (as well they should be) they are not too precious because they really deliver on flavor, texture and quality. The ""tiki tiki"" is my favorite, with a lovely tart mango to balance the sweet and creamy elements. I have also ordered big versions of it for birthday parties, and have always been impressed with the artistry of these ""enlargements"" The only drawback, I have on several occasions arrived for a good late night gab with a friend to discover they are screening some loud movie, (last time it was ""the Terminator""). Fun, I guess, but not what I go there for. Pros: yummy, not too precious, lighthearted staff and atmosphere Cons: sometimes an unexpected movie screening more

Awful Service, Overpriced 5/10/2007

As a dessert lover and a resident of North Portland I was eager to give this place a try. Coffee, desserts, open late, what more could you ask for?? I'll tell you....my experience was so bad, it promted me to write this, my first city search review. Pros: Lots of options in the dessert case, late hours Cons: SERVICE is Horrible, prices are high, cramped space more

Pix has the most delicious cake anywhere. Really. 4/16/2007

The Sheba cake must be the most fantastic creation in all of Portland. I love this place. They also have beer floats. Chocolate ice cream in dar dark beer. Yum. more

I'm not sure... 3/22/2007

My sister told me about this place called Pix, she said they surved their deserts with shreds of gold on it. I'm not sure if i believe her, so i guess i need to go check it out for myself and fined out....\r more

Good food, bad space 1/18/2007

Don't get me wrong, Pix has great dessert and acceptable customer service, but I have two gripes. I experienced these problems each and every of the six times I've been to the North Portland location. Pros: Great dessert if you get it for takeout Cons: Too loud, overpowering grease smell more

Can't beat the selection 1/15/2007

I stopped bye with a friend after dinner. It was great to find such a cool place open. I have the Royale - they were out of cheese- and a latte. It was very good. If I lived in the neighborhood I would go often and I plan to stop bye when I near. However, I would not drive in from Vancouver just to visit Pix. The selction was great and the atmosphere was the best! I would love to hang out here if I were closer. Pros: Selection, Quality, Late Night Hours Cons: Limited Coffee Bar more

Just so-so... 1/13/2007

Four of us had dessert there last night. We sampled six different desserts. The lemon tarts were wonderful - although the crust was fairly difficult to cut through. The creme brule was very nice. Two others were so-so and the other two? Not so much. Our first cups of coffee were barely half filled and we had to ask a couple of times, and many minutes of empty coffee cups later, for refills. It was an average experience. While we may stop in again, I can't imagine going out of our way to go there. Pros: Friendly service, ambience Cons: So-so desserts, high-high prices more

New location on Hawthorne 11/25/2006

This is my second review of Pix. We have now been to the Divison store and the new store on Hawthorne (next door to Pastaworks) at least 10 times. It seems that they do more business at the Divison store, as the pasteries at the Hawthorne store sometimes seem a bit stale. Both my wife and I both still love the place, but the fact that Petite Provence on Division has excellent pasteries (and the best almond croissants in the city) at half the price makes that a place we visit far more frequently. Cons: Division location better than new location on Hawthorne more

Great Date Night Dessert 11/3/2006

This place has desserts to die for - expecially if you like chocolate. The Concorde is so very yummy. It's a great place to have dessert and coffee on a date night. I got a small taste of an onion tart once and been meaning to go back and order one. Haven't been there for lunch yet but I'm looking forward to it. Pros: Great Desserts. Chocoholic heaven. Good Coffee. Cons: Crowded late night. more

A mixed bag 10/27/2006

The time I ate at Pix on Division I really enjoyed the unique desserts. Another time I got the individual chocolates and they were excellent. However my most recent trip to the N. Williams site\r was not pleasant as the place was overcrowded and noisy. Service is affable but very rushed and pressured. The desserts LOOK great but they don't taste great. They are overpriced too. Very cramped seating. Pros: chocolates, parking on street Cons: Desserts, service, ambience more

This place is highly over-rated 9/5/2006

The chocolate desserts were yummy, but were they worth the inflated prices and clausterphobia-inducing crowd? My vote is no. Getting a table was not a problem, flagging down a server was more difficult. The place was so crowded we could barely move; perched on our bar stools I was afraid of being knocked off of. The desserts were beautifully presented and creatively named, but priced about $2 a bite. I expect a lot more of service and customer comforts at these prices, the cramped and kookie atmosphere did not live up to my expectations. Pros: picture-perfect pasteries Cons: cramped and crowded, over-priced more
