Disappointing 6/19/2007

The service was so poor at this restaurant that it ruined the experience. I think that because we had a party more than six the server knew that he was getting 20% and therefore neglected the table. It took over 30 minutes to get our drinks. The food came quickly once ordered, but we had to ask many times for our server to be found because drink orders placed were never brought and orders that we wished to place were abandoned after excessive amounts of time. I suspect that if he had had to work for his gratuity he would have been more attentive. Instead when the close to $400 tab finally arrived, the server had the audacity to let us know that his included 20% gratuity was $2 short. If he had any sense he would have realized that we would have ordered twice as much food and drinks given the opportunity. I love to eat out, but this is not the place you want to do it. There are too many great restaurants in NYC to put up with substandard service. Pros: Good food Cons: Couldn't get the food due to the poor service more

Great tapas and sangria 4/20/2007

The place is really cozy and great for a date - my husband and I go here all the time, but you should definitely make reservations since this place fills up. When you're there, make sure you try the sangria - they have both white and red. The food is really tasty, but stick to the tapas. They are better than the main courses, and you're able to try a lot more. The patatas, stuffed dates wrapped in bacon, and salads are our favorites!! The only downside is that some of the tables are too close, and if you have to sit in the middle of the restaurant, it's like you're sharing a big table with other people. If you're lucky, you'll get seated at one of the side tables. Pros: Ambience, Food Cons: close tables, a little pricey more

Best tapas and sangria! 3/22/2007

I love Pipa. The staff is friendly, the place is large enough that you aren't sitting on top of your neighbors and the food and drinks are amazing! Go after work , or meet a group of friends. Pros: Food, Sangria, Service Cons: none more

Don't buy the hype but get the dessert! 3/14/2007

Pipa has a great rep although I have no idea where it comes from. The decor is indeed, quite lovely - a candle lit, victorian style space with dozens of chandeliers hungs from the ceilings. However, the tapas are sub-par as was the sangria (which is really unacceptable from a tapas bar). I went there on a Saturday night with 2 girlfriends and we ordered a great variety of food: the octopus was over cooked and instead of being chewy, it was soft (like fat) and swimming in oil and that was pretty much the theme of the evening - everything was overcooked and there was no balancing of flavors. HOWEVER, the dessert was amazing - the sorbet was delicate and wonderful, the molten chocolate cake was phenomenal, and the dulce de leche cake was perfect. Pipa is running on inertia of the past -- but if you have good company I guess any place will do. Pros: decor, spanish olives, dessert Cons: overpriced, overhyped, and overpacked more

Great if you enjoy horrific service and sub-par food served 3 hours late... 2/24/2007

Service: managers, Ricardo and George, nice people, but severly inexperienced. Food: greasy, bland and uninspired. First, let me say that we never did actually eat in the dingy, over-cramped restaurant, for that I'm thankful. The night started with an 8:30pm reservation for 6. The hotess finally offered us a 4-top table next to the front door at 10:00pm (at which they later seated a party of 3). We declined and agreed to wait a little longer for an actual 6 person table; that never happened. Instead, around 10:30pm they ushered us over to the fanciful sister restaurant, Lucky Latin or whatever it was and offered the Pipa menu. The food was overpriced. Clearly not worth the time or trouble of enduring the incompetent staff. Thank goodness they comped the sangria! I guess this is what you should expect from a restaurant owned by a carpet store. Pros: the sangria Cons: staff, management, food, the building itself more

Date begins here 2/19/2007

Great place to start the night around Union Square. Good sangrias, some very unique decor from the furniture department store next door (although leaving the price tags on is a bit tacky but in the dark you won't notice...much). The food is solid, but if food is meant to be the highlight I'd say go elsewhere. more

One of my favorites 2/4/2007

This restaurant is one of my favorite places in the city - perfect for a date or dinner with a group of friends. The atmosphere is amazing and the sangria is delicious. The tapas are great, i am obsessed with the calamari! My only complaint is that the seating process is somewhat inefficient. 2 out of the past 3 times I've been there we have had to wait over 1/2 an hour for our table, despite having a reservation and arriving on time. That to me is ridiculous and contradicts the purpose of calling and making a reservation in the first place. The meal has always been worth it though. Pros: atmosphere, excellent sangria Cons: inefficient hostess more

  • Pipa is Spanish slang for having a good time and the people of New York are doing just that at Pipa Tapas y Mas. Innovative tapas, flavorful sangria and specialty cocktails, a bustling bar scene, great music and countless chandeliers set the scene at this enchanting location.

Editorial
  • The Scene
Inside, the restaurant feels almost tent-like. Entering the candle-filled space is like opening the doors on a gypsy hideaway.

    The Food
The traditional and interpretive tapas throw a sharp focus on the definitive themes of Spanish cuisine. Few styles of cooking place such an importance on texture--baby eels in a sizzling slick of oil, for example, is nudged just a shade away from pasta by the crackle of tiny bones under your teeth. Garlic is another constant, with its fascinating range of application throughout a meal--from subtle background agent to aggressive palate-prickler.
