A few problems 6/13/2008

This is a beuatiful restaurant and the food is excellent but on a recent weekday evening our diner was delayed, the server told us that there was a party of eight that was slowing down service. Since the restaurant was not even half full I can only imagine how slow they get when they are busy. The ladies room had no toilet paper in two of the four stalls , the wastebasket was ov erflowing onto the floor and the flowers were dead and dropping petals onto the vanity. When I told the hostesss she was indifferent and just said "" I'll let someone know."" I am reluctant to return because of this casual attitude about cleanliness. It makes me wonder about the kitchen and how clean it may me. more

They are the best in private dinning and in buffet 4/30/2008

We dine at Harbor55o several times in a year, miss the Pieces of Eight, but the building and the crew are mostly the same, if you are looking for that open water, ships sailing by in the warm weather or that chance to watch Mother Nature in her finest weater chances, Harbor 550 is the place. Have had warm and grand experience there for almost 40 years..Please bring you childern and see how dinner can be a family affair. You can't compare the view of the Lake right at your window to anyother lunch, dinner or just let's have drinks with any other spot in SouthEastern Wisconsin or the Gulf of Mexico.. Pros: Its the only place I have seafood, any thing..always very nice Cons: They put ice in the Alexander Brandy more

No Lunch Buffet 2/3/2008

My friend and I use to enjoy their lunch buffet. We stopped for lunch Jan. 29, 2008 and were told that they stopped serving the lunch buffet a few months ago because it was not profitable. While having lunch off a very and I mean very limited menu there were only two other guests for lunch. I guess thats profitable!!! more

Great Weekday Lunch Buffet - at a good price too. 11/16/2007

While I haven't tried the dinner menu, I had a great experience with their lunch buffet during the week. We went after 1pm, so it wasn't very crowded, and we had excellent service. The server was prompt and checked on us at good intervals. The buffet had a great selection and I tried almost every item on it! I'm usually not a big fan of buffets, since they seem to sit in the pan and dry out very quickly (especially since the buffet started at 11am). Fortunately, that was not the case, and the food was excellent. The potato soup was very creamy, the mashed potatoes tasted homemade (rather than out of the box), the fish flaked nicely, and even the roast beef was tender and I was able to slice through it with my fork. The cheesecake, while it won't compare to the Cheesecake Factory, was still delicious with its raspberry topping. Oh, and did I mention the $13 price tag... The view is excellent also! Whether you're looking at the lake, or the incredible design of the Art Museum, it was definitely a great dining experience. Based on the other reviews, maybe it isn't the best place for a seafood dinner (did everyone forget that we are in the midwest :)), but I'd definitely recommend this place for an American style lunch. And did I mention free parking... more

AWFUL!! 9/7/2007

At first glance, this restaurant looks nice - great location right on the water, outside seating...you get the picture. DO NOT BE FOOLED. We were in town on business, and the restaurant we planned on was not open that evening, so we ended up at Pieces of Eight (which we later renamed Pieces of ""something else""). I'm not sure what our first clue was that our evening was going to take a downward spiral. Maybe that our server had no clue how to explain anything on the menu, or that they didn't actually have any of the items featured on the menu (no lobster, no tuna...hmmm). Well we went ahead and ordered a crab cake appetizer - bad choice. I think they were still frozen in the middle, and resembled a roll of bread more than a crab cake. Ok, lets move to salads. My ""caesar"" had some kind of milky looking dressing on it that had no apparent taste at all. At least the lettuce was crisp! Now on to entrees. Only one person at our table of six had any luck, and he ordered a steak (and even that came out well done when he ordered it medium). The Soft Shell Crab was awful - chewy, smelled super bad, and not fried all the way through. I used to live in Maryland - I know what crab should taste like. The scallops were also a bust - just the smell wafting off of them made us all want to run for the hills. The manager finally came over to apologize and offered free dessert. Great - can't go wrong with dessert right? WRONG AGAIN! Three of the items on the dessert tray - carrot cake, chocolate cake, and cheesecake - all looked like they came from a box in the freezer section. The fourth - a strawberry ""parfait""- was nothing more than strawberries and Reddi-Whip. Desperate for sustenance, we tried the carrot, cheesecake, and ""parfait"". Lets just say we would have been better off hitting a convenience store for a box of Little Debbies. Pros: location Cons: where to start? more

Worse Everything! 9/6/2007

To start, the server mentioned she'd been on vacation for a week in Idaho so she wouldn't be able to comment on the ""new"" menu. Hmmm, odd comment, but interesting. I figured she must still be in a potato-haze, forgetting that working in a restaurant requires her to at least know SOMETHING about the menu. Here we go.... Pros: Non Cons: Food is universally horrible more

Not a four star 8/29/2007

8/25/07 My mother made a reservation for 7:00PM on 8/25/07 to celebrate her 60th birthday. There were seven in our party which included my two older brothers who flew in from California for the weekend to celebrate. We arrived 10 minutes early and were seated immediatly. The first 30 seconds were the best 30 seconds of the evening, as I gazed at the open lake and beautiful art museum. Our table was not big enough for a party of seven. We packed ourselves into the seats as the children behind us banged our seats with a filthy floor beneath them. We ordered calamari which took 50 minutes and wasn't any better than Applebees. An hour later our dinner was served. My mother and I received cold prime rib, broccoli, and potato. I ate my dinner because I was very hungry. My mother wanted hers served warm so she sent it back. The manager served a new steak cut very thin to reheat and serve fast. By that time, eveyone at the table was done eating. The party was very upset and didn't until then realize that no one had received their salads. The manager only offered a complimentary dessert. It was a terrible experience. Needless to say, I do not recommend and will not be returning. Pros: view more

Good and Bad. 8/14/2007

On August 10, 2007 we seemed to have the same experience as fun4jz. Although the service was excellent and my steak was great, a special of the day was very disappointing. We did not ask for a manager, but I think he was sent by the wait person since she had to apologize for the meal. We also found him to be totally indifferent to the situation. The salmon special seemed to be covered in raw dough. There was also supposed to be a special side (cabbage and apple) salad that was missing, and never did receive, when they brought the salmon. The reason given was that the chef was late getting out of a 2 1/2 hour meeting. They seem to have eliminated a lettuce salad with any meal -- I had a $31 steak which only contained a large stump of overly developed brocholi and baked potato. The bread was wonderful. The last time we were there we were blown away with a lettuce salad that contained a terriffic dressing, walnuts, and several other toppings. Pros: Great view Cons: Be careful of the time of day for outside dining. No shade. more

Terrible service. 8/8/2007

Terrible service. Waited 15 minutes for wait staff to arrive at table. Finally spoke to ""manager"" who had an indifferent attitude & made no effort to rectify the problem. This occurred on 8/7/07 at 2:30 p.m. Not welcoming to my guest from out of town. Will not return. Only positive is the view. Food has been of inconsistent quality. Obviously the service is unacceptable. Pros: The waterfront view. Cons: Terrible service - bad image for Milwaukee. more

Great view, food and service disappointing 6/25/2007

We had a lunch here before returning home to Minneapolis. The view is spectacular from the patio, you're sitting right on the water. Unfortunately food and service didn't quite match up. Our server missed a few key points-never offered the wine list, didn't bring the bread basket, only offered dessert to my boyfriend who opted for the buffet (where it was included), glasses were left empty before they were refilled. For lunch I choose the whitefish, great piece of fish-no flavor or seasonings. Finally, we attempted to pay with a credit card but were told the machine was temporarily down. Luckily we had cash on us. If I hadn't been distracted by the view this meal would have been a disaster. Pros: Lake Michigan tableside Cons: Spotty service, bland food more

Amazing Brunch 5/27/2007

The brunch at Pieces of Eight was exceptional, they had a wonderful pasta station and a wonderful buffet, they also had all you can drink momasas and champangne......But they didn't have quite good service .We had been sat by the waitress almost immediatly after walking inside but the waiter...by the name of Kevin wasnt attentive at all he took more than 10 minutes to greet us and didnt give us a positve dining experience that we were told pieces of eight offered. Pros: The food was exceptional Cons: our waiter was absolutely horrible more

User review by medstudnt07 3/17/2006

The restaurant itself, along with the view, is beautiful. However, the outside construction could use some fixing - but I realize this is not the restaurant's fault. The food was exquisite actually - beautifully prepared and mouth watering. I got the salmon dinner. It was served with the best mashed potatoes I've ever had and perfectly cooked vegetables (the mushrooms and spinach topping was soooo good). The salmon itself probably could have used a little more salt, but this was nothing to complain about. My boyfriend got the chicken scampolini, which he too said was excellent. I'd probably go back again. Pros: cozy, very good food Cons: h20 wasnt refilled more

Aweful, will not return 10/2/2005

I had guests coming from out of town I thought this would be the perfect place to take them. I was wrong. The long and short of it, I made my reservations a week in advance because I had guests traveling 4 hours to attend a show in Milwaukee. We were seated at 5:30 pm and by 7:00pm we only had drinks and appetizers. I repeatedly told the waitress we had time restraints due to the show and by 7:30 pm the manager came over and told us our order was lost. He paid for the appetizers and drinks and offered a return meal which meant nothing to my guests because they live 4 hours away. My guests never received their food and went to the show hungry and unable to eat until 10pm. Completely unacceptable. Pros: Views Cons: Poor Waitstaff, Outdated, Management more

Its Coming back 2/27/2005

My wife and I used to go here 20+ years ago when dating, and then everyonce in a while after Marriage. The place and food went steadly down hill and peaked at a low in 2003, I complained through a letter, and was given a response from the NEW OWNERS, and asked me to come back at their treat, It was good, Much better than just 4 months earlier, but still not ""quite"" up to the price. We tried it again today, And It WAS awsome, The Food Was Superb, And Staffan (the waiter) could not have been better. I am So happy to see this fine resturant making its way back to years gone by quality again. They still have a few things to upgrade, (dishes are tired) but hey, they are NOTICABLY better. I give 8.5 out of ten!! Pros: Great Food, Our waiter (Staffan), Veiw Cons: dishes are tired, the outside need work, some crowding more
