Overall a good hotel/casino for Reno 2/20/2010

I lived in Reno for 25+ years, and have to say this was my favorite hotel/casino. I lived there before they originally expanded the Peppermill back in 1980, from what used to be a restaurant and bar (that was THE place in town to party after hours), to a small casino that has grown enormously over the years. Out of all the restaurants (and there are many), my favorite, absolutely hands down, is Oceana. It has an extensive menu for both lunch and dinner. The food is excellent, and I have always had wonderful service. The atmosphere is just above average. All in all a great experience for a decent price. The White Orchid (supposedly a 4-5 star) restaurant is my least favorite.....wayyyy overpriced and the food/service mediocre. It's a total rip off. I do not make this comment in haste, as I have eaten there on numerous occasions. Thank goodness all my meals were a comp. And yet I still felt ripped off! As far as a place to stay: The mini suites are my favorite rooms! They contain a steam/shower, a jacuzzi, mini bar, and if you get a corner room, great large window views. The main spa in the casino has decent amenities. Some workout equipment including treadmills facing the pool, and a couple of excellent massage therapists, I must say. In a nutshell, for Reno, I would highly recommend this casino hotel above all others. The one thing I do not like about it is the neon lighting. I realize Reno is ""the biggest little city."" But honestly, the Peppermill has gone too far in the seriousness of the statement with their ostentatious lighting. Pros: Some very good restaurants, nice pools, nice suites Cons: neon lights more

Three misses and your out! 5/20/2009

I have eaten at the White Orchid thee time and that is only because two times I was coerced by clients. Now I flatly refuse step foot into that place because of ... lets say tummy troubles so not to be seditious. I have eaten in total dives and some of the best restaurants including Le Cirqu, Jean Gorges, L'Ami Louis, Felix, L'Astance, Delmonicos. I know what to let slide when paying $5 for a meal and have a good understanding of what to expect when I plunk down $250 per person. I have both front and back of the house understanding and expertise. I know my way around a kitchen and could hold my own with some three star chefs. I am a fat SOB because I love food. In short I know what I am talking about when I say the White Orchid is at best a three diamond establishment. No way could I go there three times over a two year period and have service so slipshod each and every time. When I rate a restaurant I take note of everything around me including how my wait staff provides for my needs. At the four diamond level I expect to have what I want as I want it. I should not wait too long for anything. A truly great wait staff is one that knows what you want before you ever think about it, well thats not the case so... If I have a displeased face, I expect the waiter to notice and quickly ask me what is wrong. I should not have to wait 10 minutes after being served to be asked if my steak was cooked to my liking especially if I predicated my order with extra well done. I don't care if the chef has problems with cooking steak that way, it is the way I like it and I was quite clear on my request. Even if you excuse the past problems tummy upset to the rich food... yeah... a cup of goose live pate wouldn't faze me, the service has been anything but. Downstairs, the much less celebrated steak house has more attentive servers. Come to think of it the first time I ate at the White Orchid about five years ago, I had to wait 15 minuets for my reservation that was scheduled for early diner. It was an insult to wait that long for a table I had reserved three weeks prior. To make things worse there was only one other couple there at the time, and I was not given a proper apology for my wait. I would have walked out but I was on a date and had to make nice. Now I must say the Peppermill's wine list is rather good and their handling is exceptional, but that is to be expected if your paying upwards to $150 for a decent bottle. I do like that the setting, the chairs were quite comfortable and the china was a pleasant pattern. But I go out to eat not be entertained or relax or drink for that matter. I want to have good food, which it was to a degree, but at this price point it should have been better. Pros: Atmosphere is exceptional Cons: Four diamond - Who's fooling who? more

Our Favorite Casino 5/17/2009

This is the place to go. Whatever kind of food you want, they got it somewhere. The rooms are fantastic, the pools are great. New parking ramp makes it easy to get to and park. When they added new towers they remodeled the entire place so it looks like one uniform structure. You do not have ""old"" parts that got neglected when they built the ""new"" parts. To find a casino hotel as nice as this you will have to go to Vegas!! Pros: Terrific decor, recently upgraded. Cons: There are none. more

Too good to be true 4/24/2009

The only negatives I found were many snobby Narcissitic people from California walking around the casino in their miserable state of mind. These tree huggers, self important rude people can make your time their unpleasant. Stay as far away from them as humanly possible. The room rates are cheap! 5 star quality. I stayed at the Wynn Resort and found our room was nicer and 1/4 the price. Reno people are freindly, The cocktail waitresses are not as rude as the ones in Vegas, and came around every 10 minutes and offered drinks while I was gambling. The food was great at the Oceana, with great service. The Buffet is a great value, so is the coffee shop. We were comped most of our meals, and we didn't spend thousands of dollars either, I never got that in Vegas! Pros: Great Prices Cons: Unfriendly Bay Area people more

Top Place to stay in Reno - especially after the remodel 1/13/2008

I rarely write reviews for hotels, casinos, restaurants, etc. but after seeing some of the negative reviews for the Peppermill I felt the need to defend. I lived in Reno for 4 years and still travel their from the Bay Area for work and pleasure and must say that the Peppermill has consistantly been a great resort with very good payouts - I understand why some people may be bitter at losing (but that's why they call it gambling people) - but to imply you understand how the payout systems work is basically speaking without knowledge (I was contracted with the gaming control board in Nevada for years and can tell you it is an extremely complex process). I was there last weekend and have only had my expectations raised and can say that the Peppermill is the closest thing to Vegas in Reno and will even go far as to say in certain areas it exceeds Vegas. A recent remodel (which has included a great expansion in the casino floor, fabulous new rooms, a great new restaurant and beautiful new bars) has been accompanied by a noticeable increase and emphasis on service - everybody was absolutely helpful and pleasant and clearly went out of their way to meet customer needs. Having worked in the resort industry and gaming for years I can say this resort is fantastic (remember, you are in Reno so if you are expecting the St. Regis NY you will be let down) and that is after losing money just a few days ago - it is to be expected - but when you get the kind of comfort, quality, service and overall good experience the Peppermill provided me, it makes loosing a lot easier - I am sure I will be back in the next month or so. Pros: Service, food, rooms, and bars are all great Cons: a little far from downtown (if you consider that a con) more

Horrible slots 11/28/2007

They use pretzel (twisted) logic and basically lie about their 99% payback on slots. Their slots have to double the average play (dollars in) of indian casinos before they pay anything (knowledge through experience of 10-15 years). A typical example is that $1,000.00 in a machine ""may"" get $200.00 of hits for more play. If you win anything, cash out fast. Their 99% payback is from Sunday drawings, which is like being struck by lightening of winning.\r \r You can't even get a free cup of coffee or water after dropping $1,000.00 or more. You have to have $20.00 in a machine for a $2.00 cup of coffee. Their waitresses are rude and don't provide decent service, cold coffee by the time they back to you.\r \r The great rooms don't make up for the bad service and how cheap this place really is in the casino. Pros: rooms and food Cons: slots and service more

Sushi , Sushi, Sushi, yummy, yummy, yummy 6/5/2007

Oh my I can't wait to go back again. They had the most excellent service, delicious susi, and crab, great appetizers, and the atmosphere, I felt like i was under the sea myself. It was great, for romance or family time. Highly recommended Friendly service, and very clean. more

Horrible! 3/20/2007

This place gives dive casinos a good name! First of all, the blue neon lights that run rampant through the casino are enough to make you nauseous! The restaurants are terrible. The casino is sub par at best. My advice - skip it! The best thing about the peppermill was the free valet parking! Pros: Free Valet Parking was lovely Cons: Everything else. more

Casual and elegant. 2/1/2007

Great Food. Great Presentation. Over the top decor. Soothing ambiance, unbelieveable that it is in a casino. Great. more

Very nice place - a bit expensive though 1/28/2007

If you can wade your way through the cigarette smoke in the Peppermill, this is a very nice place to go. They have excellent meals and good service! It is busy on weekends so reservations would be recommened. Pros: Good food & service Cons: Long wait times on weekends, casino smoke more

Nasty, Nasty, Nasty 1/1/2007

Where to start about how miserable this hotel is. First, they gave away our room with a confirmed late arrival, then the front desk staff wouldn't tell us where the room they placed us was at, we had to walk with our luggage through two buildings and a construction site to get to the room (bellmen are so rare it's a joke), then we were placed us in a room so small the fold away bed (dropped off by housekeeping, but never set up) wouldn't fit until we placed the furtniture in the hallway. They did move us after the first night, but only after considerable effort. In the second room we found a used ""personal item"" under the bed the first night and grapes in the couch on the second. We had not brought either item into the room. \r \r House keeping brought one sheet when we asked for linens to make up the fold away bed. The valet took 15 minutes or more to bring your car and almost as long to take your keys. Garbage and spills were all over the place and in several cases were still present several hours later or even the next morning in one case. The vast majority of the staff was difficult to find if you needed anything, the place has a dated decor (it screams skin flick with the heavy use of mirrors in the rooms, the color choices, and whirlpool tubs in the middle of some rooms), and the staff's standards in regards to customer service are low. Like other reviewers I will also say that the main floor is a mess of mirrors, exits, and neon that can make getting around confusing. \r \r On the positive side, maintenance did promptly come to repair the toilet. The food service staff were great and the pastery chef made two incredible cakes for a family event, but that's not enough to outweight the cons of staying here. This will be one of my last choices on my next trip to Reno. Pros: Pastery Chef, Food Service and Bar Staff Cons: Everything else more

Gotcha! at checkout! 2/12/2006

The only hotel in Reno that I know of to add a special daily $3.00 ""energy surcharge"" on to the bill at check-out. This was never disclosed when making the reservation, or upon checking in. There is no excuse for this, as this is not common practice in Reno where the electric and gas rates are among the most reasonable in the counrty. The outdoor pool is fabulous. Avoid The Annex where the rooms are creaky, dark, and dank. The other reviewer with the comments about all the mirrors and neon in the casino was correct; if you ever want a great migraine, just walk through the Peppermill casino. Cons: energy surcharge more

not nice employees 1/16/2006

the attitude is very poor and the food was at best okay. more

R U kidding me?? 6/4/2005

This place is a neon/mirror mess!! You can't find your way from one side to the other. It is a fun house filled with a 1000 mirrors and neon to distract you the rest of the way. The line for the players club was too long to even wait for. I like Reno, but not here. more

Always a good bet. 5/3/2005

Whether you win a bid on 4 * hotel on Hotwire, or book with their telephone reservations for the later postcard offering, the Peppermill offer great value. The pool and tub are always ready. The upgraded rooms (business class), and spa suites, and corner rooms are truly unique. Self Parking is average. The well lit main lot has music pumped in, a true treat. The higher level rooms have a wonderful view of the mtns, or the city. The coffee shop is one of the last signature pieces. All of the California based Peppermill Coffee Shops have closed, and all we are left with is Reno, and Las Vegas. A great time! Pros: Romanza Restaurant, Fireside Lounge, The Coffee Shop Cons: same * rating as, the Reno Hilton And, Atlantis on hotwire more

The best in Reno 4/8/2005

I have been staying at the Peppermill for many years after having stayed at many other hotels in Reno. The Peppermill has spacious, clean rooms and excellent restaurants. Their buffets are great too, especially the seafood one on Friday nights. The casino is roomy and has a huge choice of slots and games. Their ""comps"" are generous and the staff generally very helpful. Their pool and hot tub is open year round also. It deserves to be in the top 10 !! Pros: Spacious rooms, excellent restaurants, good parking Cons: Buffet crowded, car valet slow more

Video poker machines 10/12/2004

They have the worst video poker machines I have ever played. If you like the game, save your money. Don't play it at the Peppermill. The machines they have installed over the past year probably have about a 50% pay back, if that. I have played this game 24 yrs. I would never play there again. Cons: , shuttle service more

AWFUL 6/27/2004

They runied my daughters honeymoon. The desk people were rude and unfriendly. They did not try to help solve the problem that they apparently created. They called them liers. The room was reserved and paid for as a gift for their honeymoon and they stated they could not accept payment that way over the phone when the reservations were made. NEVER go there!!! more

The best rooms in Reno 2/29/2004

I have stayed at several Hotel Casinos in Reno and the Peppermill has the best rooms in town. The rooms are bigger, nicer and cleaner than others in the area. The food is also excellent. The Steak House is my favorite - the quality of the meat is very good and the employees are cheerful and friendly. Pros: Top Quality Rooms, Good Food, Friendly Employees more
