Oishi Japanese Restaurant

I have not had a bad experience at this restaurant. Despite being packed into a strip mall by the overcrowded Starbuck's and Olive Garden across from Westfield, Oishi has all the appeal and charm of the classic ""family-owned-and-operated hole-in-the-wall."" The small staff takes pride in their work and puts forth an effort to make you feel welcome. The service is fast, too! The portions of all the dishes I've sampled from are generous given the price. I find the meals to taste as if they were made at home as opposed to being over-salted or over-spiced for an industrial kitchen. I find myself eating the teriyaki the most and if you feel hungry - definitely go for the bento box. You will not be disappointed by the ample options and combinations you can put together. They may not have all of the obscure sushi on the menu that you're looking for - but for an authentic taste in a relaxed atmosphere that you're not paying an arm and a leg for - this is the best to be found in town! My BF and I have been regulars at Oishi for couple of years now. Fresh, tasty food every time with consistent, awesome service. For the caliber of food, VERY reasonable price!! In fact, knowing that this is a small, family run restaurant, I want to tell them to raise the price-of course I don't as I enjoy being able to go so often. My favorite is the shrimp tempura roll-only $6 for huge/yummy rolls! Of course, bentos are great too. Not too crazy about the udon dishes-I think these are actually overpriced as somewhat of a skimpy dish. Please visit and give them a try if you haven't already-you will not be sorry!!!!!! I have recently moved to Vancouver from Portland, and was quite disappointed in the lack of culture on the northside of the Columbia Rive. That is, until I found Oishi. The rolls are simple, fresh, and perfect, the owner and waitstaff are extremely friendly, and the price is well suited to the quality. I've gone almost 3 times a week for the last 6 months, and I never tire of it. Have a sushi roll that you'd like to create, but it's not on the menu?-- No problem, just ask. Pros: Yes and yes.
