Not any Oasis, more a mirage 7/12/2010

The Golden Braid Bookstore is great and I have been there several times, but never visited the Cafe, well, tonight I decided to and I should have kept driving past. The service inside took a while to notice me, and there were others that had obviously been waiting for quite some time. The waitress was nice in confirming that the Eggplant Risotto could be made as a Vegan dish, so the order was placed. She also brought me the food to go while I was browsing in the bookstore, which was very nice. However, when I arrived home the $16 eggplant was a very small portion, and just the sauce, eggplant medallion, and risotto. There were no side dishes or bread included. As I bit into the eggplant, I was very glad to have a glass of tea near at hand as the dish was so incredibly salty that it was almost inedible. The eggplant was also mushy, as was the risotto. As I was eating, and finally gave up and threw the rest away (after about 4 or 5 bites), I realized I should have just gone to the grocery store, gotten the ingredients, and made my own. It would have been cheaper and better tasting. I felt very upset by this experience and will definitely will not be returning to 500 east, 150 south for food anytime in the future. However, books, crystals, gongs, henna, etc, are all another story. Pros: Outdoor seating, The Bookstore (Golden Braid) is Great! Cons: Overpriced, small portions, poorly cooked more

Best Environment 1/18/2010

Oasis cafe looks like an adobe restaurant from the outside and a spa on the inside. Inside there are Buddha statues, water fountains, and amazing salads (Mediterranean, Beet Tower) . The specials are always really good especially if fresh fish is being served. Sunday brunch can be crowded--so plan ahead. When I asked about the red coffee roaster in the restaurant our server says they actually roast their own beans! You will be able to tell, the coffee is really good. Pros: In-house roasted coffee, food amazing more

Good food, obnoxious atmosphere. 1/7/2009

Depending on whether you feel comfortable with the crowd, Oasis Cafe can either be a very enjoyable experience, or a slightly irritating one. The food is really good, very pricey, and certainly worth it if you can put up with the obnoxious new-age pseudo-spiritual atmosphere that permeates it and the accompanying bookstore Golden Braid. Pros: Good food, friendly service. Cons: Slightly/very irritating atmosphere more

FAIL! 10/8/2008

I used to frequent Oasis cafe a few years ago and it was amazing. Atmosphere, food, and service was great. Something has happened. I've given this place a good 8 attempts to win me back this year, but every time I've been back I've been unimpressed. The most notable problem - poor service. If you read the other reviews, you'll see this complaint a lot. I haven't had a server ask how my food was once! I never get refills on my beverages. I always have to flag someone down to get the check. The food has gone downhill as well. My grilled potatoes in the Mediterranean Salad were raw in the middle. The salad completely overdressed. My food usually comes out cool, not hot. The worst part of it all is that I've written to the owners and never got any response from them. It's clear to me now (don't know why I gave them so many chances) that I'm not going to give them my business anymore. Pros: Ambience, Patio dining, open on sundays Cons: Terrible service, below average food, customers not valued more

Maybe we shouldn't eat fish this far from the ocean! 8/2/2008

My boyfriend and I are new to Utah, and I was excited to find out about the Oasis Cafe. We are both liberal west-coasters, and this restaurant seemed to offer an evening of pretending we were back home. Yes, the atmosphere was serene and calming, and the service was friendly. But then the food arrived. We both ordered fish - I had the salmon and my boyfriend had the mahi mahi. The sauces and side dishes accompanying the fish were pretty good, but the fish was horrible. Rubbery. Very rubbery. If we hadn't paid $18 each, I don't think we would have attempted to actually eat it. What a mistake. We both had awful tummy aches all evening and into the next morning. While it may be nice to go to the Oasis Cafe and have a small salad or sandwich and then peruse the cute, new age bookstore, I would not recommend spending money on the dinner entrees. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Horrible rubbery fish, prices more

these hours are incorrect. They close at 9 on Sundays 7/4/2008

Always phone for correct hours for any business listed here as citysearch is frequently inaccurate. Women seem to like this place more than men.\r \r Good Luck.\r \r \r \r \r \r Pros: Impress your date Cons: pricey more

Flavorful and exciting food. Very friendly service. 6/27/2008

I love this place. I'm not sure about other reviewers. Place is always packed with seemingly pleased people. This is one of my new favorite spots. more

Good atmosphere, but that was all. 6/27/2008

My first dining experience at the Oasis was great. This was for dinner on mother's day. I returned today to treat a friend for her birthday and was embarrassed. The service was poor - we were ignored after being seated and after 15 minutes had to ask someone if we could get some water. The waitress was too busy setting up empty tables. Our waitress was grouchy and tried to rush us. The prices were high for such meager porportions - a small slice of dry toast, and maybe three bites of salmon on lettuce. The glasses were cloudy. The wine was excellent, but not even half full. When we ordered a second glass, we were told we drank the last two glasses they had, so tried a different selection which was stale. Neither of us could drink it. Will not return. \r Second glasses were old and we left them. Will not return. more

Oasis Cafe 3/23/2008

Although the setting is pretty, the food defines mediocrity. The prices are really high, for example a $30.00 brunch, (plus they charge extra food coffee or soda) that features shrimp enchiladas made with canned shrimp, mushy pasta pesto salad, dry scrambled eggs without any seasonings etc. The service staff was great, no complaints, but the management leaves a lot to be desired. They tried to cram our party of 8 into a 6 place table setting and then insisted they didn't have any other tables available-well, except for the two next to the door not being used for the entire time we were there...hmmmm...Don't waste your money or time at this place, there are plenty other wonderful restaurants in Salt Lake that have much better food at a much more reasonable price and who are willing to help out families with young children. Pros: Nice setting Cons: Cost, quality of food, quality of management more

Brilliant New Years Day Brunch 1/4/2008

I recently had one of the best dining experiences ever at the Oasis Cafe. First, I called just to see if they were open New Years day. They were, and when I asked if I needed a reservation, they said that I would not need one, but that they would be pleased to take one for me if I liked. My wife, two year old little girl and I arrived and we were seated right away, we did not need to ask for a booster seat either, it was offered.\r \r Our drink orders were taken promptly. I requested a glass of Champagne and some fresh cut limes on the side, no questions or weird looks, they just brought me what I requested.\r \r After my wife ordered for herself and our little one, I asked if I might deviate from the standard menu by combining the Crab Cakes with the Eggs Benedict instead of the Salmon. Our waiter was prompt to confirm with the manager and get my special order placed.\r \r I am a particular fan of Crab Cakes Benedict. These were the best Crab Cakes Benedict I have ever had! The Crab Cakes were the closest in flavor to real Maryland Lump Crab Cakes that I have had outside of Maryland. The hollandaise sauce was perfect.... Light with just the right amount of tanginess, not overly sweet and syrupy. My compliments to the chef.\r \r The atmosphere was delightful. We came in at about 12:30 PM. Fresh snow had fallen that morning and into the open patio south of the restaurant, between the restaurant and the bookstore on the other side. The sun gleamed over the snow and poured into the dining area through the south facing windows, giving the whole place a feeling of warmth on that clear winter day. Perhaps it was the sunlight refracting in to the room, but as I looked about the restaurant everyones eyes seemed to have a sparkle of happiness in them. I was overwhelmed with joy as I dined with my family and played peek-a-boo with my little girl at the table.\r \r I could not put a price on such a marvelous dining experience. -It was perfect. Pros: Brilliant Ambience, Spectacular Food, Excellent Service, Properly Priced Cons: Can't think of a single one more

Avoid the Oasis 12/28/2007

Oasis is horrible. The service was terrible, the food just as bad. I used to frequent this place years ago and it was quite good. I don't know what happened, but I would recommend avoiding it now. The waiter took forever to even notice us - then he brought water in dirty glasses. The food took forever to arrive, over 40 minutes, and then it was barely passable as food. The waiter then resumed ignoring us, never brought more water or even a check. Chipped plates were also used to serve food, a big no-no in the restaurant world. Eventually we wandered out and my friend went to Golden Braid to look around, while I tried to pay someone - I should've just left since nothing was worth paying for. Eventually someone at the front took my money. I recommend avoiding this place. What an awful experience. I don't know what happened to the old Oasis, or the old Golden Braid for that matter. They must be under new ownership, what a shame. Stay away. more

Not so much... 9/22/2007

I didn't like the oasis cafe. The actual building has potential, but the food was okay, the service was horrible. Our server came once to take our order, and once to bring our food, and that was it. We had to find someone to give us our check. I wanted to ditch. \r I haven't gone back since, and i will not go out of my way to do so. \r I did like the fact that they had such an extensive vegan and vegetarian menu, maybe that food is better than what we got?\r Pros: The patio area is nice. more

Pretty good 11/2/2006

Overpriced, but good overall. Not the kind of place most people outside of Utah would expect. Good place to go for coffee and a pastry or a lunch outside.\r Pros: Atmosphere, coffee Cons: Price more

true Oasis 10/8/2006

What a find in SLC. a unique blend of the perfect setting and excellent food - and gracious, talented staff. There are few places in SLC that I think are good on all three points. Winter or Summer the Oasis has the perfect setting. more

good place to eat for vegetarians, vegans, and don't worry, for meat eaters too! :) 8/1/2006

I love their sandwiches here, and there hummus...yum! Plus they have a really great wine list to choose from (not huge, but good) and the patio seating is very nice. I didn't mind the birds at all. And although the service is a little slow, they are still very nice and eager to accomodate dietary needs. more

Healthy Brunch and Some Sun 5/26/2006

I'm always looking for a good place to sit in the sun and eat some healthy food. When I found the Oasis Cafe, I was ruined forever. The food was filling, tasty AND healthy. The best part is that my girlfriend and I go on detoxifications occasionally, and Oasis still had plenty to offer, despite our very strict diets. I love this place. Pros: Sun, Healthy Cons: Mosquitoes more

Your Vegan friends will thank you 3/9/2006

Oasis could use some work as far as service is concerned, but the food is great. I especially enjoyed the salad with Herb Roasted Chicken. My brother is Vegan and he loves Oasis, since it caters to his persuasion with obvious care, while being sure not to sacrifice flavor. The mushroom ravioli dish is wonderful, as is the cheese sampler. Pros: Salads, Cheese Sampler, Vegan Choc Cake Cons: Birds on patio more

Going Downhill! 10/23/2002

I used to enjoy very much the Oasis until they changed their menu. Since that time I feel the quality and variety of the food has gone downhill. It is not as good. some of my favorite dishes are gone and the price is too much for what you get. Pros: Location, Atmosphere, Parking Cons: Menu Change, Price more

a good place in Salt Lake 9/2/2002

Tempeh Gyro Curry Shrimp Creme Brulee all yummy i have been coming here since they opened and love it. i am not trendy, i am not new age, and i am not any other cliche mentioned in the previous reviews. i know i like the food....consistancy and good flavor goes a long way! Service is spotty especially in the afternoon, but i know this and plan ahead. Pros: different menu items, golden braid nearby, great tea and coffee Cons: service hiccups more
