Has to be the Best Thai in Houiston 12/26/2011

My wife and I have dined at Nidda regualrly over the last several years after trying most of the other Thai resturaunts in town. NIdda serves up consistently authentic thai cuisine, we have never been disappointed. Our favorite dish is crispy duck and the alternate version served over stir fried rice noodles, vegatbles, onions with incredible basil and Thai spice. The curry disches are always excellent, a favorite is shrimp curry, the fired eggplant with a red curry sauce is also wonderful. We start severy meal with Papaya salad then usually shrimp soup. The staff is very friendly and attentive, we just really love this place! more

Good and salty! 10/30/2011

The first few times I went to Nidda I really liked it. I'd considered it one of my favorite places, but then something changed. The last few times I went my food was too salty, not uneatable salty, but it the salt was overpowering the yummy curry. I'm really disappointed. more

Decent Thai, inner loop pricing 9/26/2010

I'm always looking for good food, and since Thai is my favorite, my husband and I went to try Nidda Thai on Westheimer on the recommendation of a half-Thai friend (this same friend recommended Asia Market and Vieng Thai). I normally eat Thai on the Bellaire strip and was hoping to find an authentic experience that makes it worth a drive inside the loop. We were greeted by an attentive, cheery female server with a delightful accent, and asked her to recommend something "really Thai". She strongly suggested the Thai toast, made with chicken instead of shrimp, the "Fish in the Garden," a deep fried fish topped with vegetables and Thai sauce, and a duck with basil saying that these were dishes that her Thai patrons always ordered. Sounded great, so we ordered all her recommendations. We noticed her scurrying around the packed restaurant and it was evident that they were understaffed for a Saturday night, with just 1 other server and maybe 1 busboy. As a result, she delivered the drinks but not the water, the utensils, but not the chopsticks. Not really her fault - just the fact that she was running around as if her head was chopped off. She was conscientious and that definitely scored points, but the service could definitely have been better. The first dish, the Thai toast, was served with a side of fresh cucumber sweet n sour dip, a typical Thai condiment. The dish itself tasted good, but it was dripping in oil. I had to ask for paper napkin to soak up the excess. The second dish, and the highlight of the night, was the "fish in the garden". The fish was perfectly crisped, the melange of flavors very Thai but not too spicy, a hodgepodge of lemongrass, fish sauce, lime, chili - whatever was in the sauce, it worked and we happily devoured the entire dish. The duck with basil was another matter. One bite into the duck breast and my senses were impaled by what I can only describe as a "stinky gaminess". They had somehow managed to trap all the filthiness of the duck and seared it into the meat. Maybe they forgot to clean the duck before cooking it, whatever it was, I almost gagged. When the server asked us how the dinner was, we complimented her on the first 2 suggestions and told her the 3rd dish was was inedible. She apologized and told us she should have suggested some other seafood dish to us instead. The bill came out to $49 for the 3 dishes plus 2 drinks, exclusive of tip. The two specialty dishes were $15.95 each. The same meal in Chinatown would have cost about $30, so the final verdict? If I didn't have any other options, I would go back, give it another shot, but since I can find cheaper, and arguably better tasting Thai nearer to my home, this one's going to be a one-off. more

Torn Between Going Back or Running Away 3/10/2010

I went to Nidda Thai with a group of ten coworkers. We called ahead to let them know a big party was coming and upon our arrival they pushed together a few tables so we could all sit together. Their lunch specials are nice, especially since you can choose your protien. The lunch special came with a small salad with peanut dressing and a spring roll with lettuce and noodles in it (no protein). The salad tasted like it came from a bag, but the peanut dressing was nice. I ordered the green curry with tofu for an entree and it was delicious. I asked them to make it moderately spicy and I was glad that they took me at my word and did not send out something that was bland OR burned off all of my tastebuds. It was a Goldilocks situation, for sure. For others who wanted more spice, they provided a container of dried chile powder on the table. I would have liked more rice to have been served with it, but the table ordered more rice which solved the problem. I ordered the coconut ice cream for dessert but my stomach turned when I saw a small bug scurrying out from under the napkin on the dessert plate. I realize that bugs happen in a kitchen but really, REALLY wish it hadn't happened on my plate. I'm torn on going back because the food was great, but bugs in my food gross me out. I don't know if the bug was caused by a lack of cleanliness in the kitchen or just that one had decided to creep into my napkin. Pros: curry, lunch specials Cons: bugs! more

I wish i could stray from my favorite dish! 9/25/2009

I know anything on the menu would be terrific! Since consistency is paramount when it comes to dining out, my companion and i each always get our favorite thai curries. go try it out! you won't be disappointed. Pros: excellent service, great value more

Best Thai 2/21/2009

We have been going to Nidda for a few years. Hands down it is THE BEST tasting Thai we have found in Houston. There are other more swanky places, but at the end of the day, the food is what makes a place worthy for us. If you care about the crowd or the decor or how fancy a place is, don't go to Nidda. But if food is your thing, you will not be disappointed. Pros: Super food Cons: decor, ambience more

Pleasant surprise! 7/24/2008

My wife and I decided to try Nidda on a whim. I'm sure we have driven by it hundreds if not thousands of times, but until tonight hadn't stopped in. The restaurant is pretty simple, traditional Thai decor, and nothing too fancy. Our waiter was excellent, he helped us with our selections, gave us suggestions, and was very attentive. The food was VERY good and i have been to my fair share of Thai restaurants plus an ex-roomate of mine was half Thai and his mom's cooking was incredible. I would have to say Nidda was on the same level. I think the best compliment is that the food tasted like home cooking and when we shared this with our waiter he said, "all our cooks are Thai so we make our food authentic!" I would definitely recommend this place. It's not flashy, or trendy, but if you want good Thai, you "Nidda" come here! :) Pros: good food, excellent service Cons: bad lighting, sketchy area more

My fave Thai place in town 7/4/2008

I use to eat Thai food at this location many years ago when it was named something different and run by a another Thai woman who did very well here as well. Nidda opened about three years ago and I have been going here for about two years now. As said before the actual restaurant is not anything fancy or hip, but it is great food and for me that is what it is about. I always get the chicken sate, and the peanut sauce that they serve with it is possibly the best is town. The chicken is moist and tender. If you want your food Thai hot make sure you tell them, they do not make everything real hot by themselfs. They have Thai beer as well as some red and white wines, but not mixed drinks. I also really like the curry dishes here. I have top say that I like everything here. The only thing that has never done much here for me is their fried bananas and ice cream, just not as good as it could be. Pros: Great food, friendly service, open 7 days a week Cons: Not fancy? Not yuppy? more

What a Surprise! 11/25/2007

The outside of the restaurant does not look overly appealing, so I my expectations were not that high. But, my initial impressions were completely wrong. The food was incredible - very fresh and full of flavor. It is one of the best Thai restaurants that I have been to. The prices are reasonable and the staff is very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the items on the menu. Pros: Very fresh and flavorful. Cons: Exterior building doesn't look that appealing more

Don't let the empty parking lot fool you 10/29/2007

I finally decided to give this place a try last night and I regret not having tried it sooner. The restaurant had plenty of people eating inside despite the lack of cars outside. The groups ranged from a 8 person birthday bash, to several couples. The server was quick and attentive and even spent time helping us with pronounciations. Our water glasses were always filled and we never even had to pour our own wine. The food was extremely affordable at around $10 or under for my favorite Massaman curry. After our soups and main courses there wasn't any room left for dessert but I plan on heading back to try their pumpkin custard. If looking for a lot of spice, make sure to ask the server for it because our meal came out suprisingly mild. This restaurant is highly recommended unless you're on an awkward first date because the room can get pretty quiet. Make sure to take advantage of the Thai menu pronunciation lessons. Pros: quick service, affordable meals, cozy dining more

Thai food Favorite! 4/30/2006

My husband and I were so happy when we found this gem of a Thai food place. The place we had been going to before must have changed chefs and we were unsatisfied with all others we had tried until we found this restaurant. Pros: tasty food more

Awesome buffet 11/21/2002

More than 30 items are on the buffet, each of which could stand alone as an entree. Selections run the gamut from mild to @ss-burning, so all should come away pleased. Still a steal even after the price was raised from $6.75 to $7.95. Pros: cheap, delicious food more

Editorial
  • Perhaps the perfect example of Houston’s lack of zoning, this modest Thai restaurant happily stands next to a sex shop and a tanning salon along the Westheimer strip of Montrose. In the aging but pleasant enough interior, however, things remain business as usual for a spot often outfitted with regulars and chatty groups of friends. Customary items like pad thai and Mussaman curry are reliably tasty but Nidda’s signature dish is the chu chee eggplant--battered in rice flour and deep-fried to airy, crispy perfection and served with a side of spicy red curry sauce. Service manages to be both quick to help and unintrusive.
