i drove trucks in miami '90-'92, stayed north of southbeach, in an inexpensive midmiamibeachhotel~ very few of you would believe how much help southbeach needed at th' time; it was pretty run-down~ news cafe was instrumental in how southbeach was improved, they had not been in business there for more than 2or3yrs. at that point, and even then they served good food.\r my rating: (|) (|) (|) (|) { 4 out of 5 southbeachburgers } more

Editorial review from Urbanspoon 10/19/2009

The food was really bland and very overpriced. I took a group of five here fr Monday breakfast and was very disappointed. Walk the half mile to 2d and Collins for breakfast at The Big Pink. Food is MUCH better there. News Cafe must be paying too much in rent to be able to afford good kitchen staff. more

I can't see how this "scene" is worth putting up with the tasteless, overpriced food and indifferent service. No thanks! more

BAD 3/17/2009

Horrible food. Nasty manager!\r Go to Next Cafe on Lincoln... It's SO GOOD! Beware, the portions are huge at Next Cafe.\r \r The food at News is so bad... My cobb came without avocado, and barely a few stips of cold pre-cooked chicken. The manager didn't do a thing about it. He was very nasty, in fact. It's overpriced, and not filling at all. We went to eat at Next Cafe right after, to fill up. Pros: location Cons: food, management, quality, attitude more

Average Food, Expensive Bill, Sore Tush!! 10/26/2008

Very famous cafe..Gianni Versace dined here regularly.. HOW SURPRISING!! The king of fashion dined at what is simply a Diner serving Diner food at upscale restaurant prices. Service is friendly but not the most attentive. A beautiful setting with the ocean across the street is ruined by the most uncomfortable chairs ever to exist. My backside still aches!! Pros: maybe just to see what it's all about,, then again, WHY? Cons: I didn't expect it to be a diner disguised as a restaurant. more

Good appetizers, people-watching 9/2/2008

We stopped by News Cafe because it is famous for the people-watching on Ocean Drive. We specifically went during happy hour after researching it as ""the best happy hour in SoBe"" All liquor is 50% off, but happy hour only applies in the bar area not the entire restaurant, which was weird. The bar does have 3 tables on a balcony that overlook Ocean Drive, however, so we sat at one of those after ordering at the bar. The bartender was very nice and helpful. We ordered a Miller Lite, which came ice cold, and a Strawberry Mojito, which was too sweet for my liking. We also got the spinach and artichoke dip, which was fantastic. It was piping hot and fresh and a perfect chip to dip ratio. We recommend for the people-watching and happy hour, but we would not go to this place for a regular meal. The menu was expansive and not reasonably priced even for the area. Pros: people-watching, appetizers Cons: expensive, happy hour only in bar more

good place to people watch 1/5/2007

the people watching here is excellent because it is right on ocean. the service is also fairly quick and they are friendly. the breakfast dishes were ok, although nothing spectacular. more

So-so breakfast food 1/3/2007

Skip the News Cafe and head right to the Front Porch or the 11th St. Diner. I dined at 3 different places for breakfast while in SoBe and this was my least favorite. The food was mediocre (I think they used frozen breakfast potatoes-- ew) and the service was incredibly slow considering we only ordered omelets and yogurt. Our waiter was probably the least friendly server I encountered. Overall, not worth it. There are plenty of better breakfast joints around. Pros: large menu w/ lots of options for everyone Cons: not the greatest breakfast food in SoBe, slow service more

Found a Aphid in my salad 9/9/2006

I am a native to Miami and spend much of my time at South Beach visiting local restaurants and just enjoying the crowd.\r This morning my husband and I decided to just go take a dip in the beach and enjoy a lunch at News Cafe. \r We ordered Caesar Salad and Create Your Own Pizza. Our table was located on the sidewalk and though I don't know the waitress' name I can describe her as: blond, pony tail, black visor. Not the pregnant one.\r Well, we were enjoying our salad, and my husband just yells at me, ""don't eat it"" and started waiving to the waitress. When I looked at his plate, there was a huge aphid. (Can't write bg on this review) How grouse!!!\r The waitress just came to say she was sorry and ""we"" had to tell her that we weren't going to pay for the salad. She didn't even offer.\r Moreover, she carried on as business as usual and I had to ask her, ""What happens next?"" She said, ""oh the manager will go into the kitchen and take care of it...""\r We didn't get one person from Senior staff to apologize... much more, try swallowing your pizza after that site???\r more

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!?! 4/9/2006

How this restaurant ever got a 9.2 rating on citysearch is beyond me. We went for breakfast and not only were my eggs served cold with cold potatoes, my wife's french toast was cold as well, and the topper was the side of bacon, which wasn't so much a side of bacon, but shredded bacon that would not have been appropriate as bacon bits. All this while the table next to us sent their eggs back three times as well and the kitchen never got theirs right. No apologies from the staff and an attitude that was not helpful to say the least. THIS IS A TOURIST TRAP THAT CARES NOTHING ABOUT QUALITY BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU AREN'T COMING BACK. DO NOT EAT HERE. Cons: Food, Service, Attitude more

Service Without A Smile 4/3/2005

At least the food is ok here-not great, but at least ok. But the service is another story. Arrogant, slow, inexperienced waiters- no wonder they have to include the tip! Better to get takeout-you won't have to suffer the horrible service! Pros: great people watching Cons: terrible service, no parking more

No News is Good News 3/19/2004

Busiest spot on Ocean Drive for outdoor breakfast is clearly News Cafe. My ""jewish omelette"" (salmon & cream cheese omelette) was fantastic! My wife ordered Eggs Florentine, and when it arrived 20 minutes after ordering, the eggs & sauce were cold while the accompanying potatoes were hot. We sent it back, and the waiter returned with another fresh serving of it in about 7 minutes. Same problem--the sauce was cold. Try AGAIN, and on the 3rd try, (about 7 minutes later again)the dish was served at the temp it should have been. However, the spinach in the dish should have been shredded, and the bland cream sauce on top should have been a more flavorful hollandaise-style sauce. We expected better, but at least the embarrassed waiter didn't charge us for the Florentine dish. As a bonus, they have the classiest, cleanest bathrooms I found on the strip--impressive! Pros: Ambience, People-watching, Classy restroom more

Decent diner. 1/8/2003

This place is very popular, and we ate here for lunch and late night. Food is pretty solid, with tons of healthy options. However, service is terrible. Worth checking out if you can get a sidewalk table. more
