Ned Foster is a mechanic working out of his house in the Armory District. He specializes in older (but not vintage) cars, especially Volvos. His work is inexpensive and he will sometimes go out of his way to pick up or return a car. We used him for a few years. It was difficult to tell whether the recurring problems with our cars were due to our cars being old and near the end of their natural lifespan, or to the limitations of our mechanic. We bought a new car.
