Mughlai, India's finest cuisine 1/1/2012

I have lived on the upper west side for almost 6 years and this is by far the best Indian food I've had in the neighborhood, really fantastic. I recommend the Hyderabadi Chicken Curry- chicken cooked in spicy gravy, the Dhaniwal Korma- crispy fritters tossed with shrimps & onion in a chick pea?s batter, and the Keema Samosas- ground lamb cooked with spices wrapped in a crispy crust. Also not to forget the chicken tikka masala is delicious, very flavorful and a very good portion. Not too highly priced either, You definitely get more than your money's worth. more

Great For Vegan! 12/7/2011

I only eat vegan, which can be very tricky to find good restaurants with decent prices to go with my appetite. To this day I have found none better than Mughlai on Columbus ave, where during lunch hours for $9.99 I get a stunning vegan thali platter, which includes Two Vegan Entr more

Nothing Else Like It 12/7/2011

I had been to Mughlai several times over the past 5 years that I have lived on the upper west side, every time for dinner, until one day I decided to pop in for lunch on a day off from work. I wouldn more

Not Worth The Money 2/14/2009

We wanted to splurge a little last night and picked Mughlai based on their ratings and reviews. Delivery for dinner for two with appetizers and a dessert came to $83. Fine if it's great food, but it wasn't. Pros: Lots of menu choices, decent entrees Cons: everything else. Poor service, slow delivery, cold food, bad appetizers... more

Editorial review from GrubHub 11/2/2008

I go to this restaurant when I have some extra $$ because it is a bit pricey. I was hungry and though that I wanted some Indian so I decided to order delivery from my favorite Indian place. This turned out to be a bad idea. My order was placed at 6PM, delivery was expected at 7PMish, came at 8:10. The food was also cold and needed to be microwaved. There was also no silverware. I was very disappointed and I give Mughlai a 2 star rating for take out because it took over 2 hours (I WAS STARVING) and was cold. Sorry. more

Best neighberhood Indian 9/22/2008

I naturally tend to try every restaurant I can before forming an opinion about one vs another however I have dined at Mughlai a few times now and feel that their tikka masala chicken deserves a Citysearch post. It is sweet, spicy, and creamy and probably in the top 2 I have ever had (The top spot still goes to Tamarind in London).. The naans are crisp, light and fluffy.. My wife is veggie and they have pleny of options to keep her happy.. Try any of the kofta's or saag, several varieties of each, they are also pretty amazing. Funky decor with the walls of glass and greenhouse vibe but a fantastic location a block from the natural history museum and park. They are not open during the week for lunch which is a big minus point.. my wife who is expecting our first was forced to eat down the street at another Indian place and was so unhappy with the food and service that she walked out and waited a few hours until Mughlai opened and recieved and prompt early dinner delivery. Pros: Veggie options, open tandoori oven, friendly staff Cons: not open for weekday lunch, small bathrooms more

Worst place ever !!! Go somewhere else please. 10/2/2007

Extremely bad service. Rude staff .Very rude reception..it was the worst experience ever. The food is not that great. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Save your money , time , patience and go somewhere else , there are better places around. Pros: neighbourhood Cons: everything else...rude staff , food , ambience etc etc. more

Tasty, Small, a bit expensive 8/4/2007

A small restaurant on UWS, great food although quite pricy for my taste. It's still worth a go for a date. more

Great service, Really good grilled tandoori 12/15/2006

The best part of eating here is watching the chef use the tandoori oven. It's like watching IRON CHEF LIVE while eating all of that great food. I was there on a busy Saturday night the place was packed and the guy was non-stop action: cut, skewer, grill, flip, marinade, cut, serve!!! He was doing like 20 naan breads, 20 whole chickens, 20 kebabs, and about 5 whole fishes every ten minutes. The food was great and the guy caught on that we were watching him closely so he sent our group a special bread that he made with nuts, honey and dried fruit. Then he started making goofball gestures through the window Benihana style pointing his skewers at us and kicking up the action - it was a great experience eating Indian food. The service was really good too they never let our glasses run dry and we even got a free round of ice cold mango schnapps shooters at the end of the dinner. I live on the UES but will def. be back at Mughlai more often. Pros: Get a seat with a view of the tandoor, order grilled meats and fish Cons: ONLY red meat is Lamb, no beef more

Do Yourself A Favor And Skip This Place 11/11/2006

There are plenty of great Indian restaurants in New York City and this one certainly isn't. Fortunately it's consistent - the terrible service matches the bland and tasteless food. We walked into the restaurant and everyone in there acted as if they had all been told they were being fired at the end of the shift. I only wish I had taken that as a sign and left, but we didn't. The samosas were spongy and probably the worst I have ever had. The lamb and chicken dishes were without any flavor and no hint of freshness. When the bill arrived and tacked on a dish that we never received it was the final insult to a miserable experience. If you're hungry and you find yourself standing in front of this restaurant, walk the extra block to anywhere else. Pros: In the neighborhood Cons: Cooks, Food, Freshness, Waiters, Greeter, Expense more

The Subcontinent to you on a platter! 8/8/2006

How do you define a good customer? Well, one who orders straight of the menu and does not make too much of a fuss ( cant forget a good tip), if this is so; then i must be the worst of customers. i dont order straight of the menu, and fussy about almost everything. At Mughlai i have found that almost all my wims and fancies are accomidated..........though i would not recommend being fussy on a busy night. The servers will go out of there way to see a smile on your face.......and that rice pudding is sure to help there!!! The lamb chops are truly exquisite, but try the Goa fish curry.....and u will be mesmerized, Both dishes are true examples of the master craftsmanship by the chefs at mughlai are. Mughlai the land of lassi and curry!!! Enjoy Pros: Green house like decor, windows on columbus Cons: Could size really matter? more

Food is not bad, service extremely hostile 7/24/2006

The food is pretty decent here, but the servers are so incredibly rude that it just makes you not want to go back. They look at you as if they want you to die for coming into their restaurant. Ordered a chicken saag dish once that had 3 measley chunks of chicken drowning in about 3 cups of spinach sauce. more

Very Tasty Indian Food 4/16/2006

I am an Indian Food lover and have tried so many places! Mughlai was surprisingly good and flavorful. It is a great place to go out in the neighborhood for Indian food. It is a bit pricey, but it is worth it. They will also make special things that are not on the menu if you request it. Has a good brunch as well (much better than going to a buffet.) Pros: Tasty Food, Creative Chef, Lots of Windows Cons: A little pricey more

Mughlai On Columbus Was A Treat !! 11/16/2005

I heard that Mughlai is a Columbus Ave. tradition! I live on Columbus Avenue, but had never been. A group of us went there last week and we all really loved it!! The first thing I noticed is that it has a kind of unique shape. Its like a greenhouse, but they serve Indian food!! The second thing I fell in love with was their tamarind sauce and if you drizzle it over a hot vegetable samo sa you are in for a treat!! They were so good, we kept ordering more of them. We also sampled some dishes from their tandoori oven, primarily lamb and chicken, and they were flavorful and tender. And they come out sizzling on these platters and create a bit of a spectacle! Hehe! We thought that was neat. Going forward, Mughlai is a keeper on my restaurant list. I just hope they deliver!! Pros: "Samo sa", Tandoori Meats, Knowledgeable Staff more

Very Disappointed 10/31/2005

I didn't think it was possible to get bad Indian food in NYC, but it is after all. Not only was the food terrible, but it was very much over-priced for what you got. On average a main dish was about 16-20 dollars (not including rice), but the quality and taste was much lower than what you would get at a place that charges 8-12 dollars. The food was very oily and very bland and the meat dishes came with big chunks of gristle and fat. Additionally, I went with a group of four so I was able to try various dishes and I was disappointed with all of them. The saving grace was the mango lassi, but you can get this at any Indian restaurant (with very little variance in taste), and with a price tag of 5 dollars, I suggest you do. Pros: not crowded, service Cons: value, taste more
