""Couldn't care less"" attitude of staff 6/18/2010

I went there wanting to buy a sheet of fabric to use as a loose cover for a futon at home. I've been searching for months and even ordered a fitted cover from another store - but it didn't fit and I can't return it. \r \r So I hoped to buy a 7 x 8 foot sheet of plain green linen or cotton. That's it.\r \r I went in - looked around - there were only a couple other customers - and went up to the front for service. Both female workers were working with the other customers. When one finished, she ignored me (though I was standing right there), walked away and started stuffing a granola bar in her mouth. (She was middle-aged, wearing glasses.) I gave her a moment to eat it, then walked over to her and asked if I could be helped. She just stared at me in response. So I elaborated ""I'd like to tell you what I'm looking for and then you help me find it?"" She just uttered a ""yeah, uh-huh"" so I started to tell her ""I'll be honest - I don't sew and I don't know anything about sewing, but I know what I want: a 7 x 8 foot piece of fabric to cover my futon with. Nothing fitted - just a loose cover."" \r \r Immediately she showed nothing but apathy toward me and began telling me that the largest size that fabric comes in is smaller than that so I'd have to piece together fabric, and that's all she tells me. I believed her - and said ok, but I wish I had brought in the current linen cover we use which is 7 x 8 feet (it's blue and patterned - I want plain green) so she can see more specifically what I want - all she points out is that it was precut so she repeats (as if annoyed), that I'd have to piece fabric together to get that size. I asked ""Can I special order a larger piece of fabric?"" All she did is say NO (like how dare I ask) and repeated herself. Through our whole conversation, she spoke to me with such disinterest and negativity that I felt nothing but shock and defensiveness. I couldn't believe it so I just walked out and told her as I left ""You just make me feel like an idiot"" and a moment later she started calling ""I'm sorry but that's what the sizes...""\r \r I don't care if I have to ""piece together"" the fabric or not. I understood I couldn't just buy the size of fabric I wanted. I'd have to make it. (Though I wonder - then where do BLANKETS come from? Obviously larger cuts of fabric are made SOMEWHERE.) \r \r But I WOULD have bought fabric to ""piece together"" (my husband sews, actually) if she had shown even an ounce of interest in me as a customer. She could have acknowledged my presence - I had to ask her for help twice. She could have smiled once - she didn't. She could have spoken to me with a desire to HELP and educate me, so I could leave with the fabric and information I needed - she just made me feel like a fool. I don't feel she should be working with people - I've never felt such rudeness toward me as customer. Maybe I shouldn't have been there because I don't sew - maybe that was her problem with me. Or maybe she was having a bad day. No matter what - they lost a customer, and I'm telling others about my experience. Pros: ??? Cons: Apathy and rudeness toward new customer more
