Metropolitan Lumber & Hardware

I have been residing in Soho since the 80's. I have made numerous attempts to support this establishment and finally decided that they do not deserve my money. The reason is because I find the staff to be extremely rude not just in person but over the phone as well. They are either underpaid & angry taking their frustrations on customers instead of quitting the job, or they are all self made millionaires that do not need customers & they have Metropolitan Lumber just for fun. I really wish that they would move out or sale to descent people who do care about the business. I recently had a major renovation on my loft & made sure that none of the material was purchased from Metropolitan Lumber. Pros: convenience Cons: horrible service more

Wanted a $90.00 piece of 96 x 48 inch plywood, ""Cut once-- a 60 inch and a 36 inch piece"". The man at the saw cut the the board in two at the right measurement. Then proceeds to cut the 60 x 48 inch into a 60 x 36 inch piece. Before he makes the cut I urgently stop him asking him what he was doing. ""I don't want you to cut this piece"". He shrugs his shoulders and pushes the piece through anyway and then proceeds to tell me that they do what is on the ticket. The ticket was wrong. Not what I said-- ""One cut: 60 and a 36 inch""-- but two cuts into a 60x36 inch cut. I walk in to protest but they said they couldn't help me and that I would have to buy another $90 piece of wood. The guy at the counter says ""I carefully checked with you. You wanted a 50 by 36 inch."" I reminded him that I said ""one cut"" into 36"" and a 50"". ""Well what are we supposed to do? It is an expensive piece of wood."" You could be a man and and admit a mistake. You could talk to your employee who ran the wood through the saw even after I told him not to regardless of what the ticket said. You could display better business acumen and realize that a customer who has spent thousands of dollars there over the years might be worth keeping around. Additionally the service has always been condescending and rude. This was the last straw. Avoid this place. Pros: They sell lumber in SoHo Cons: They are the ONLY place in SoHo to find lumber. THIS IS THE WAY HARDWARE STORES SHOULD BE...THE GUYS BEHIND THE COUNTER KNOW HOW TO DO THE JOB AND THEY HELP YOU BUY THE RIGHT STUFF...IT IS NOT GRACIOUS HOME STORE- IF YOU NEED THAT - GO THERE... THIS IS A NEIGHBORHOOD STORE WHERE YOU CAN GET A REFERRAL FOR A HANDY MAN OR AN ELECTRICIAN ... ANYTHING YOU MIGHT NEED FOR HOME IMPROVEMENT...\r Pros: REFERRALS FOR SMALL JOBS , KNOWLEDGEABLY STAFF Cons: NONE more

The store's a mess, the service is indifferent to impatient.\r \r They always tend to have what I need though, many times they saved my day.\r \r Plus, there's nothing else around for your immediate hardware needs anyway.. Pros: They're there, their stock Cons: The rest. more

This is not a bad store product-wise, but the people who work here are harsh and condescending to a point where I avoid it even though it's the closest hardware/lumber place to me. I rarely get upset by that sort of thing (this IS New York after all), but they have repeatedly shown themselves to be so rude I leave the place angry. You won't wish you gave them your business... avoid. more
