Mercado Central is often referred to as the "Latin" Calhoun Square. It sits on a corner of E Lake Street in an area that features many new Hispanic businesses. Unlike these storefronts, however, Mercado houses about 50 businesses all under one roof. They include several bakeries, a bookstore, a butcher, clothing stores, a candy store/piñata shop, and several restaurants. The place is usually pretty bustling, but there is almost always a place to sit in the modestly furnished cafeteria area.
