Mayuri Indian Restaurant

I don't mind spending a lot on a good meal, but to spend $58 for two plates and two beers and have it be as bad as it was is ridiculous. Our first clue should have been that it was a Thursday at about 7 pm and we were the only people in the place. I seriously doubt that this place could pass a health inspection - there where at least eight lights burnt out, our table was dirty and the bathroom was disgusting plus there were no paper towels (kind of makes you wonder how the cooks' dry their hands after using the bathroom). The food was horrible, not horrible at $58, but horrible at any price - the Tandoori chicken leg was raw, not rare, but full on raw. The lamb stew had a decent flavor but but the portion was tiny and the lamb chunks were overcooked. There was a bean dish which half the beans were so overcooked (burnt) that they were inedible. The restaurant will make you sit for 2-3 hours for a simple three-course meal for a-la-carte dinner. The waiters will greet with a sullen, sad face. The main course for a party of four usually comes in 2-3 installments. The buffet regularly has cold, hard tandoori chicken and items once finished are not replenished. Please enter at your own risk! I went for lunch buffet for 8.95 today at 12:30 PM and food is aweful. I could hardly see anybody around may be they re doing a gud job in keeping customers away. Lady who manages the place is busy over phone. Totally cold food , no variety , nobody bothered to refill anything. Chicken was half cooked. Puri n pakoras dipping in oil crisp n cold . On asking the owner sent bread on table but still no refils on buffet table. Billing you need to check to even pay. Not going back n recommend avoid such places. I do not know...at what ""manhus"" time, we decided to go to this place..We were really hungry so thought of going somewhere near.\r \r We were welcomed by a snobby , rude and ravan like personality...fulll of attitude...\r \r We ordered vada and Chole bature....We asked to server the appetizer first...i dont know whether he did not understand the meaning of an appetizer,....he told me very rudely that we would server everthing together....what kind of a service is that....\r \r When our food came finally after a era long wait....the vada was not even half cooked..serverd with 1/2 ounce shutney and 1 ounce of sambar....and in the chole bature there was only one batura and literally 3 ounces of chole ...I think he stole one batura and rest of the chole to servre another helpless ignorant customer.\r \r On the whole a funny experience...we had a good laugh on the service and the owner....I WOULD SAY>>>>WASTE OF TIME < ENERGY AND MONEY....\r \r Try the other Indian resturants, like Chennai Masala, Curry Leaf and Abhiruchi....they are 100 times better than this place.\r \r The owner SHOULD take some ""MANNER"" classes...and learn to SMILE.\r \r PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE FOR GOD'S SAKE. Food was decent but ridiculously overpriced for the amount you get. My husband and I got a chicken-curry filled crepe. The crepe arrived, was about 18 inches long, Not filled at all...to fill it, we were given a tiny bowl (had about 3 ounces of food in it) of chicken curry to fill this giant crepe. For $10.95. Insane! The food was tasty, not anything great. How do these people expect to stay in business with these prices? The interior was pretty crummy too. The entire menu was overpriced...their appetizers on average were $7-9...This is a little place on WALKER road...not in the heart of the Pearl--those prices are a joke.\r \r Also, the service was very slow and the owners very unfriendly. I travel the globe for work and always try the Indian in whatever city I'm in and I have yet to find an Indian restaurant that tops Mayuri in Beaverton, specifically their biryani and dosa offerings. I first started going with colleagues for lunch at Mayuri's buffet, which I found above average (relative to their competition). Over the years they've actually improved their buffet by expanding their offering, such as adding biryani in the rice section and typically a lamb dish along with the chicken masala and tandoori chicken. I noticed other commentaries noting the buffet being out of dishes, which I've experienced at times too, but I should note that the line is always full and people help themselves to ""ample"" portions, depleting food far faster than reasonable service can replenish. For example, I was recently in line with approximately 5-6 people in front of me when a full pan of naan [which is excellent] was brought out. By the time I got to the naan none was left.\r Buffet aside, I've found the dinner options even more impressive relative to their competition. The dosas are excellent, specifically the meat dosas, and the biryani is top notch. I've even found the staff amiable to adjusting the spiciness of the food.\r And regarding the wait staff, I've found them kind and courteous, although at times on the slow side when customer traffic is high. I read other comments that found the service cold or curt, that certainly has not been my experience. Perhaps a bit more cultural sensitivity - something I would have expected naturally from Portlanders - is needed. Otherwise, I recommend they try TGI Fridays or Applebees for smiling faces and pleasant chit-chat with their hosts. Worst Indian restaurant in Oregon. I went there 3 times with the expectation that this time it will be better but looks like it gets worse than last time. First time when I went there I did not like the way they were treating people. Very unfriendly. If you like chicken and eating it little bit more than others then owner will look at you in such a way as if you have made a crime by eating more chicken. I went there with non-indian friends and they hated the customer service. Last time when I went there I had a terrible experience. I saw that they were making cornish game hen and selling that as chicken. This people are super cheap. Their buffet items are empty most of the time. If you ask them to get something, they will get stuff only in bits and pieces.They served chicken which was only 25% cooked. It was completely raw inside. There was only one person, an Indian lady, who was cleaning and was also serving the food. When I talked to her about the uncooked chicken, she said that I should check it before eating. I was shocked and reliazed that there is no point discussing this with a lady who is so stupid. I have decided to report it to health agency and let them handle this. more

This restaurant is the best South Indian food I've ever had. I've eaten at 5 local Indian restaurants, two in Vancouver, B.C., China, and many others throughout the U.S. (North Carolina, Tennessee, Minneapolis, etc). The food is spicy and flavorful, and the Naan is nothing short of perfection--fresh and hot from the Tandoori oven, lightly browned on the outside and soft in the middle. Our favorite is the Chicken Biryani and the Chicken Dosa--they are happy to make things as spicy as you would like. Their raita is homemade! As far as the service, the owner and his wife are friendly and welcome us with a smile each time we go there. If we don't eat at Mayuri at least once every 2-3 weeks, we are craving it. Every other Indian restaurant is a disappointment to us now! For anyone who wants authentic South Indian food, this is the place to get it. The cost is reasonable, especially considering the spices are all fresh and nothing is from a jar. The buffet is also better than others we've had locally. Enjoy! It was our second visit to this place,Since it's near to our place, It was ridiculous the way the staff behave as if they were doing a kind of social service. The language and the kind of ignorace was shocking, there was any hardly any items to eat,, thats not the issue. The way they treat and language does not have some basic sense of courtesy. its like saying if you want wait or have what ever like feeling. I honestly can't say whether Mayuri is better than food court Indian food. I'm going to go with it being a toss-up. First of all, when I called to order, I was greeted with ""Hello."" That's it - no, hello, this is a restaurant or anything. But - I'll skip all of the ""the people who work here are rude"" information - because that seems to be well-covered by others. \r \r We decided to order take-out on evening. When I saw the bill when my husband came home from picking it up - I certainly expected to be in for a treat. They finally hired a new waitress/hostess who is actually very professional and courteous. She makes good conversations and kills time if the food is going to be late (The food is always served late). She is highly skilled unlike the old waitress who never cared to smile or even say hello. I tried this place with my wife and kids one a Thursday night in early March. The waiter was businesslike, not rude nor welcoming. I believe I ordered a lamb curry, my wife the chicken biriyani. The food was bland, and the portions of the various side dishes were small. While I am not well versed in the regional cooking styles of India, I've eaten at Swagat, Swagath, and Abhiruchi, and was pleased with all of them. I've also dined at Plainfield's Mayur for less traditional dishes and was also pleased. My problem with Mayuri is that - for the price - I would expect the food and ambiance to be more thoughtful. I will choose Swagat or Swagath before considering Mayuri. I would choose Abhiruchi before Mayuri for quality sans ambiance. I would choose Plainfield's for Indian inspired dishes that are more cerebral and more romantic (both the food and the ambiance). Though I make very good biriyani myself, I had to go to mayuri one day because I was very hungry. My friend and I ordered some food and asked the person to get the appetizer alone fast. I donno what he said, but we didnt like it, it was mocking ! Then our food arrives. I ordered a chicken biriyani, which was microwaved and got. I swear, even a roadside hawker's biriyani will have more than 2 small pieces. they were literally small. The biriyani wasnt good either. Lets think it was a bad biriyani day for me. I paid the bill and left. I check my card statement, I was billed 4 dollars extra other than the tip. I had mayuri's food many times, I never had a bad experience like this. My wife and I discovered this excellent South Indian style restaurant about a year ago, and we eat there about once a month. My wife is from Bangalore, and loves this place. We always get one Thali dinner and split it. My favorite is the Lamb Saag, and my wife prefers the biriyani. I would recommend the lunch buffet, which has excellent quality food for a much better price than the dinner. We have never had a problem with the service, although we did notice that now we are regulars and the servers recognize us, we recieve slightly faster service and are warmly greeted. We ordered some vegetarian dishes and some non-veg stuff as well. The Dosa was just about OK, but the sambar that accompanied it was not up to the mark. My friends said that the chicken dish was good. My wife had the chole batore and they only serve 1 bhatura for $6. Also they forgot to bring us the coffee but did not forget to bill it. I ordered take out and was told food would be ready in 25 minutes. When I arrived at the appointed time, the manager told me in an curt, unpleasant manner that the food wasn't ready and to ""sit down for 5 minutes"". Over 15 minutes passed. No food. No status update. No apology. The restaurant was not terribly busy. I left, and I have NEVER walked out of a restaurant before. Previous visits to both the lunch buffet and dinner service showed decent food and indifferent service. Turns out I should have heeded previous posts about the angry manager.
