Wonderful Japanese Ambiance with Sushi Bar, Dining Room, Tappan Tables and small dark and cozy bar. If you like ""old school"" restaurants with low lighting and great food and service, this place is for you. If you are looking for something slick and hip - go elsewhere, please. The sushi is always great and is downright cheap compared to other restaurants. They have a wide variety of traditional Japanese fare that never disappoints. Servers are conscientious and prompt. If you want a good table in the dining room on Friday or Saturday night - call for a reservation or you could have a long wait. For those on this site who have left negative reviews I say good riddance to you! More room for me! :) Seriously, this place is great. I have never posted a review in my life - but I just had to defend my beloved MATSU's. Pros: Yummy Affordable Sushi and Great Service and Ambiance Cons: It is popular and can be hard to get in on date nights more

I don't get the hype 8/27/2009

I'm not one to complain a great deal. In fact, I've only done it a few times. But I felt the need to give my 2 cents on this restaurant. Pros: Cheap prices Cons: not great sushi more

The Sushi and Sashimi at the Sushi bar at Matsu is fit for a Shogun on Seven-Eleven wages. 9/18/2008

I love Sashimi and Sushi if it is fresh and of high quality ,prepared by a Sushi Chief who is properly trained with many years of experience and an eye for perfection. This is what I found at the Sushi bar at Matsu. Nothing was missing except for the high price. The Sashimi salad was like an adventure with tantalizing pieces of fish in every bite. The sushi was mouth watering with not too much rice. I will be back next time I am in Orange County. Thanks for a real treat that I wish I could have enjoyed every night. Pros: Great Sushi and Sashimi at the Sushi bar Cons: hadn't found it sooner more

The WORST FOOD EVER!!!!! 6/9/2008

Hi all! First off, these reviews are very very misleading! I am an avid sushi/Japanese food goer and a former employee at a Japanese restaurant and I was thoroughly disappointed. After reading these astounding reviews I thought I was in for a quiet a palate pleaser, to my dismay it was an appetite suppressant!!! I was excited as soon as I entered the authentic ambiance, but it was immediately ruined by the foul smell of urine. The greeting was amazing and the service was great but As soon as the plastic, sour, cardboard, pure funky taste of what was supposed to be chicken entered my mouth, I wanted to remove it immediately! I wasn't the only one. As I looked across the slightly dirty table, I found my boyfriend making the same disgusted face. I wasn't alone. Not to mention the rice, miso ,cucumber salad and tempura was not very tasty (barely taking a nibble of each). I couldn't even take another bite of my overwhelming pile of food, so I immediately asked for our check. WoW it was cheep for two very large meals $15.00. So I guess if you don't like good food that is well prepared in the right amount of time. Then this is definitely the place for you. But I do not recommend it to anyone who actually enjoys good food! Oh and by the way, I have never thought to go out of my way to write one of these reviews so I hope it is helpful. Pros: Nice set up Cons: FOOD more

Great Time, Great Food! 2/15/2008

My 9 yr. old son and I both LOVE this restaurant. He loves watching the chefs cook right in front of him. His favorite is the onion volcano. I love their chicken and my son loves their shrimp. I also appreciate how well they treat my son. Their service is excellent! I highly recommend this restaurant. Don't forget to try the Green Tea Ice Cream! Pros: Service, Food, Show more

What I compare all other sushi restaurants to 9/23/2006

Best place. Hands down. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the food is superb. I am yet to find a better tuna tataki at another sushi restaurant. I've brought my parents, countless friends and 3 or 4 dates to this place. It's fantastic. The price is the same as any other reputable sushi restaurant, but the quality is just amazing. Authentic japanese music is heard in the background, the female servers wear kimonos. Their drinks are great. They serve cold Ginjo sake in a glass bowl with ice to keep it the same temperature, and hot sake in a tokkuri that sits in a bowl of hot water. The food come amazingly fast, and you get a lot for your buck. The chefs at the sushi bar are incredibly friendly and funny. They really take care of you. Often times when you eat at the sushi bar they'll give you a complementary desert; strawberries, oranges, or watermelon drenched in a sweet cream sauce or mirin. It's really a nice way to finish off a meal. Pros: Ambience, food quality, service is awesome. Cons: Parking is a nightmare... try to get there as early as possible. more

Matsu is the sushi standard that I compare all other sushi restaurants 9/15/2006

Matsu is 3 restaurants in one. The teppen grill, the sushi bar, and the regular dinning. You cannot make reservation for the sushi BAR, but highly recommend rsvp for table or teppen. I call at 1PM to reserve a spot for two at 8pm. The sushi chefs Yuki (tall guy), Yuji bought the place and now is the manager, have a great sense of humor. yes it is a bit pricey, but you are also paying for freshness. With raw fish, I will gladly pay for the freshness, If you want risky cheap fish then go to Todai up the street, but Matsu is quality, Matsu is freshness, Matsu is great service and skill in the preparation and presentation of the food. I have brought many friends new to sushi, and they were impressed with the skill of chefs. Sushi connaisseurs will appreciate the artistic preparations when asking for off the menu items. Try ordering some of the fish as sashimi and see the decoration... ask for Tiger eye, Love boat (itsa not a boat), Poorman handroll, lobster handroll (seasonal), spanish mackarel, SASHIMI: halibut, yellow tail, seabass... they have great menu of cut-rolls too. Pros: the waitresses wear kimono outfits, music is traditional, service is excellent Cons: Parking can be challenging, arrive 10 mins to get a good spot, otherwise you'll circle for a bit. YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS more

IF YOU HAVE NOT TRIED MATSU'S more

It is SOOOOO GOOOOOOOD! 8/23/2006

This place has it all. A great little sushi ber and food is excellent. It has very fresh fish that is prepared only the Matsu way...soooo gooood! There are six Teppan tables and a large dining area for bigger parties. If there's a wait, you can kick back in the lounge and have one of their famous Mai-Tai's or even a Scorpion! Everyone is friendly. Many of the folks are locals that know one another from going there so frequently. We go there at least a couple of times a month and it is always worth it. Pros: Fresh fish, nice people, great ambience. Cons: parking, small sushi bar. more

More like Benihana's copied Matsu 8/15/2006

I would highly recommend Matsu to anyone who wants a high quality food, good drink, fun night out. Start off with an iced bottle of Sake at the bar and then join other diners at the Tepan table for food, fun, and entertainment. The food is wonderful, the chef's hand picked from Matsu's own cooking school, and the wait staff is polite. I have been eating at Matsu for over 10 years and every time I go is as good as the last. Skoshi Desune! For those of you that don't speak Japanese that means very tasty. Pros: Everything! more

Best sushi in orange county!!! 7/10/2006

matus sushi is the best!! the wait to get into the sushi bar is usually about 45 minutes to an hour but there is a great bar to have a drink and relax while you wait. if you love sushi and authentic japanese sushi chefs who not only provide excellent cuts but the service is outstanding. we are weekly customers of matsus along with many others! Pros: Food, Service, Atomosphere more

User review by mamamoon2 5/11/2006

The dining room was very nice. They also have a sushi bar, cocketail lounge and teppan style to eat at. The food was good and the price was expected for a fine dining restaurant. I'd definitely come back...The ladies wore kimonos! more

Place to bring a date 3/22/2006

The sushi used to be good but the last time I went, it wasn't that great. But the environment is very nice and the waitress are dressed in kimonos. They look really nice. The service is good. If you need a place to bring a date, than this is the place. more

matsu... like bennihana's 10/14/2002

like the typical japanese restaurants made for non-japanese folks, the place is a bennihana's clone. the food's good, but it's overpriced, much like bennihana's. the servers and cheifs are friendly, so i guess that's what you're paying for - the service - when you go here to eat. it's a good place to go to for a little one-on-one with the opposite sex. a little pricy, but if you really want to impress your date with matsu's quirky chiefs, then i would recommend this place for you. Pros: friendly Cons: bad parking, expensive more
