Yes, there are both straight and gay self-identified people in the world. Thank you for sharing your views. I hope it was cathartic for all concerned. A nice unbiased review of the bar would be much appreciated. I don't know what this place is like now. In 1972, the bar didn't have a dance license. That didn't stop it from being the hottest early evening dance venue in the city, or from being raided by the cops every night after all the neighbors called in complaints. My friend Shawn says it is still a cool neighborhood establishment. more

how bout we keep the hate to a minimum! 11/5/2008

you know, i'm a hetero gal who grew up here and i am astounded and disgusted by the anti het reviews i have read here! and you wonder why you lost the support of everyone for prop 8!! seriously!! there are more important things in the world to focus your anger on. get a clue and get a life. i'm sorry people have treated you unfairly and that you for some reason think that hets are horrible people, even though you wouldn't be alive without mom and dad boinkin! but do not encourage and continue hate and discrimination, especially not in MY city! i was born and raised here, i like so many san franciscans have fought for human and civil rights and the last thing i need is some angry little faerie who can't get booty on a friday night taking out his anger on me and other hets! if it's so bad here, come to my neighborhood and hang out at the frickin hole in the wall....prmoise..i won't ""infect"" that place! Pros: it's nice to get out of my neighborhood Cons: it's a treck from my house more

Dansbee1 you make me sick 7/18/2008

Dansbee1, what you wrote is disgusting. While I do not fall into the frat boy category, I, and the majority of the world population, fall into the heterosexual category and I am offended. I want to ask you this: What would happen if I wrote something like that but inserted gay instead of heterosexual? How would you like that? You are ignorant. more

great mojitos 6/6/2008

has great mojitos! fresh and a variety! and i'm normally not a drinker. if you dont think about how the cheeses, olives and vegetables were left out the whole night, it's pretty cool haha i havent gotten sick from it yet! :P\r \r only thing i dont like about it is how crowded it can get. otherwise, great hang out! Pros: mojitos, free appetizers Cons: crowded more

Once a gay bar, now infected with straight people 11/1/2007

What a shame. Once a nice gay bar, it's been invaded by (ugh) heterosexuals -- the fratboy and sorority element, at that. Don't these people have enough places to go without dragging our institutions down to their disgusting levels? Pros: It's been in business a long time Cons: Heterosexual fratboy pigs more

The Lion Pub is a Gift to San Francisco 8/4/2007

I'm a gay, high end, professional businessman from Las Vegas, and I've been coming to the Lion Pub for about ten years, every time I'm in the City. I certainly regret that the gay character (mostly gay, professional males who live in the area) has beem deminished over the recent years, but at the same time, I'm fascinated to see this ""discovery"" of a great bar by the apparently straight, female professional class (and there boyfriends), as if it was all something brand new. The Lion Pub was a great bar ten years ago, and I'm sure will remain so (under present ownership) for many years to come. It's fun to hear the Ladies rave about fresh ingredients (ambience, etc.), when many bars have been using fresh lemons, limes & pineapples for an awfully long time. Gee, Gals, you really do need to get out more. Fortunately for the Pub, the Ladies are so together & professional that they would never think to stay in a bar beyoud nine o'clock, thus giving room for the decadent fellas. I've little doubt, that if we get a female president (much to be wished for ), you girls will discover a whole new San Francisco openning up to you. The bottom line is, the Lion Pub is a small gem, and now that gem is known throughout San Francisco. We who love her, give to the City, the Lion Pub as a gift. Who knew? Pros: Ambience, Bartenders, Service, Location Cons: Happy Hour Often Too Popular more

What happened to the Gay '90's? 6/26/2007

This used to be a quaint little gay bar that served as adjunct to the Alta Plaza. Now it is a glittery cheese bar with a arrested devoloped post graduate frat crowd. On weekend that horrible crowd is packed cheek to jowel with the cheap intoxication of Calvin Klein's One. Banana Republic attire suggested. The charm of the former bar can be imagined if you look to the walls and try to tune out the blazing pop music and cheap colorful cocktails dripping on titts already pouring out of their owners blouses. YUK Pros: Great location. Cons: Crowd of neanderthals. more

Great bar for all people 4/2/2007

This bar is awesome any day of the week. If you're looking for a chill after work spot mon-fri, you can always find a seat. While it gets crowded on the weekends, it's a great scene to come with a group of friends or just for a date. Fresh squeezed greyhounds, screwdrivers and fresh fruit mojitos. \r The bartenders are always working hard squeezing and muddling the drinks. The ambiance is cool, a dimly lit room with lots of plants and seating.\r Whatever you're looking for there is a time of week for you here at the bar. I love to come here during the week so that it isn't so crowded, but that's just what I like out of a bar. Pros: Fresh fruit drinks, mood, secretly hidden away Cons: parking, cash only more

It's like a bad college party. 2/16/2007

The bartenders and their little entourage are irritating. Too many college newbies running around turning this once classy bar into a bad fraternity party. Service can be slow and the crowd is just unappealing in its immature nature. Only recommended to the immature at heart. Pros: Fruity Mojitos Cons: Young underage crowd, unattentive staff, slow service more

Cool bar, always crowded 9/17/2006

Lions Pub is a great spot for a week night drink. It's always crowded, they usually have a spread of free appetizers, and the fruity drinks are the best. However, if you're looking to dance this is not your place - a) it's too crowded and b) you can't really hear any music. Oh, and unfortunately they only take cash - so come prepared! Pros: Great fruity drinks Cons: Crowded more

amazing strawberry mojitos 7/31/2006

Great drinks and a good crowd. I am not so sure about the cheese that has been sitting out all night though. more

Way too loud... 7/5/2006

Been here once or twice, and the atmosphere is fine. But the place is way too crowded, and it's way too loud.\r \r Pros: Cute place. Cons: Way too crowded. more

Fun, but bad cocktails 1/11/2006

The ambience is pretty cool. My husband and I had a lot of fun hangning out by the fireplace and thought the decor was relaxed but still quite chic. The only thing that was a dissapointment was my drink...it wasn't just bad but quite disgusitng. They tried to pass off a VERY cheap vodka and half crushed watermelon as an exotic fresh fruit cocktail delicacy. Go, but I would stick with beer or wine. Pros: Ambience Cons: Bad drinks, apathetic servicee more

Best place to chill in 11/8/2005

The Lion is a great place to come and have some good drinks in a relaxing place. I always have a fun time and they make the best greyhounds anywhere. The fresh fruit juice is amazing. I agree with the other reviews also, it is a great place to take a date or meet new people. Pros: Atmosphere, Drinks, Hotties more

My Local Watering Hole 10/5/2005

Love it! Great people, good music, and delightful snacks to munch on. Perfect first date place too. more

Party On 8/22/2005

The lions is a great place to have a party, the atmosphere is great, the drinks are strong, and the crowd was fun. We had my birthday party here last Thursday and it was a ball. We brought in about 25 people and everyone had a great time and also tied one on. The fresh fruit drinks are remarkable, if I were you I would try the GREYHOUND. The place was so nice to reserve our party a section for us for no cost and provided free appetizers. You can't go wrong here. Pros: Fun Place, Greyhounds more

Mint, Mint, and more Mint 8/15/2005

This is a fun spot with some really good drinks. I came in with my girlfriend and here friends last weekend and we couldn't help but have a multitude of mojitos. The mojitos in all of there flavors were deliteful and delicious. It was a fun time and definitely worth coming back for the freshes drinks in the city. Enjoy! Pros: Mojitos, Fresh Drinks, Atmosphere more

Love this little place 8/11/2005

I've been to the lion on a few different nights now, and it's quickly becoming my favorite bar in the city. Their crazy strawberry and blueberry mojitos are almost enough to make me forget that summer in SF is cold & foggy. Love how the women get dressed up in there, too. Take a cab though, because parking is tough and the fruit drinks are so good that you might forget how drunk you are. Pros: the grayhounds, the mojitos, the women Cons: parking more

Fun/Easy neighborhood bar 8/5/2005

I go here when I'm feeling low key and want to share a couple drinks/stories w/ friends.. while sitting at a table! Been here several times and I've never had a problem grabbing a seat, even on the weekend (well, i've only gone on Fri's...). No dress code and they play good house.. AND they serve complimentary snacks (sushi, crackers, cheese...), no fee to get in! Pros: free, easy to get seats, not pretentious Cons: parking more

Great place for a Birthday 6/21/2005

This place was great, my girlfriends and I had my birthday party here last weekend, and it was great. The people were nice enough to reserve us a space without charge and the drinks they make are so tasty. I always knew about the greyhounds, but they have awesome flavored mojitos, which are so fresh and tasty. I can't say thank you enough to the bar staff, and I would recommend having your birthday here. Try the mojitos, they are worth it. Pros: Drinks, Atmosphere, Courtesy more
