Editorial review from Citysearch 11/18/2012

Terrible service! Me and my husband left the restaurant before they got our order, probably took 1 or 2 minutes for service. The host and the waitress had a rude attitude and i won't be coming back. I tried the chips and salsa....not so good. I've been to many Mexican restaurants in Salt Lake City and i did not like this one. \r Wouldn't recommend anyone here, maybe the food is good but the service come on! more

Service was terrible, never going again 5/21/2012

I have eaten at this estabilshment since I was a child. This use to be my Mother's favorite place, and we would go there for dinner or lunch sometimes. They've had really good food at a good price, and use to have great service. What turned me off and has made me not want to eat there ever again was the way I was treated by the person who seated us. I'm not sure if he was part of the family that owns the place, balding middle age average build. This guy barely said two words to us when we came in. On the way to the table, I mentioned that we would like a booth. He rolled his eyes, didn't say anything as he turned around and almost blasted right through me. After he guided us to our table like animals to a trough, he threw down the menus and walked away. This bothered us enough to get up and leave. As we were walking out the door, our normal server even came after us and said ""hey, where are you guys going?"". It really hurt me to have to leave, that particular server has been really good. So if you want decent food and a decent price, and don't care if your treated like garbage La Puente is the place for you. If you have a sliver of self-respect or like to be treated like you matter then go else where. They lost a 20 year loyal customer because of horrible service in just one instant. more

Lousy service, average food 6/21/2011

The waiter seemed annoyed to wait on a group of 8. The water pitchers sat empty, which was annoying because what passes for salsa is just spicy, runny, canned tomato paste and peppers. Our food arrived at intervals of several minutes. The smothered soft taco was a true disappointment. Toss on a bunch of salt and pepper and find some taste. There was abundant cheese.\r \r This place was once good. No more. It is now way, way overpriced and resting on a dead reputation. more

LOCALS FAVORITE 6/4/2011

If you are from out of town DO NOT MISS THIS. You will never taste anything like this. This is Utah's hidden secret. Their smothered burritos with cheese are out of this world................. truly addicting When I moved to Florida from utah La Puente is the only thing I truly missed. I even called them to see if they would freeze dry a smothered burrito and mail it to me (no lie) ha ha. I am a little disappointed their prices keep soaring but other than that highly recommended more

Best Northern New Mexico Mexican Food in Utah 9/23/2010

I have always enjoyed the food at La Puente restaurant. The chili, beans, tortillas, etc., are made fresh everyday. Although it may not look and taste like Mexican food from Mexico, that's because this food is a mix of American Indian, Spanish, and other European countries, and Mexican. This is the traditional Mexican style food of the Southwestern United States, and in this instance, New Mexico. Traditional food that has been around since before much of the southwest became part of the U.S. This is a food one would get from grandma's kitchen. If you want excellent New Mexico Mexican food, take your family to La Puente, I do. It is by far the best in Utah. Although all La Puente restaurants serve excellent food, the one I usually go to is on South State street. Enjoy!!! more

Gross 7/17/2010

I remember going to this restaurant awhile back. Every single item of food was disgusting! I will never go there again. After eating there, I was sick to my stomach the rest of the day. I wouldn't suggest this to anyone! Cons: everything more

Bland, bland, bland 5/30/2010

I have never written a negative review of anything. If I don't like something, I simply avoid recommending it. However, after the experience I had today at La Puente, I feel obligated to try to save my fellow Salt Lakers from a horrible dining experience. I didn't know it was possible to make Mexican food so bland. The stuff my wife and I ordered tasted like it had been boiled and it seemed that the chef had taken absolutely no consideration as to how the final product would taste. I had to dump a bunch of tobasco sauce, salt, and pepper just to choke my food down. My wife had to do the same thing to her chimichanga, We were both starving when we went there, and when you're really hungry you usually take a charitable view toward the food as long as there's a lot of it. But the food I had today wasn't worth the trouble. I've had way better meals at Beto's. A lot of people seem to like the smothered burrito, and maybe that's the one dish that keeps la puente in business, but their nachos, Mexican steaks, and Chimichangas are all just really bad. La Puente Restaurant's dot Wasatch Front, and my only explanation for the restaurant's apparent success is that a lot of people in Utah have no idea what Mexican food should taste like. The food at La Puente is dreadful. It's tasteless, bland, dry, and no matter how cheap it is, it's just not worth it. Pros: Won't cost you much Cons: Not worth even that much. Taco Bell has more taste more

Best Smothered Burritos! 3/2/2009

Their Smothered Burritos with Cheese are dirt cheap and too good to pass up. Friendly staff, fresh chips & salsa at every table\r \r I love this place. No matter what crowd you?re dining with, they can all afford and they will all enjoy La Puente. \r Pros: Great food, cheap, clean Cons: Small parking lot more

More Native American than Mexican - locals love it for some reason, but I ended up going to Berto's instead. 11/15/2008

This is NOT Mexican food. I ordered two shredded beef tacos, a staple of Mexican food. I come from Phoenix, Arizona, where the Mexican food is awesome, so I know what to expect. What I expected was a fried corn tortilla filled with marinated shredded beef, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. What I got was like two giant Taco Bell gorditas - like a big pita (which reminded me of frybread) with un-marinated, flavorless meat, lettuce, and tomatoes. Tasted completely bland and the bread / tortilla was soggy before it even made it to the table.\r \r On top of this the prices were high and they charge for chips n salsa. The refried beans were very plain and tasted like they came out of a can. I could not palate this meal and ended up going down to Beto's immediately afterwards to get my fix.\r \r Don't go here expecting Mexican food. Pros: The only pro was that it was right down the street from my apartment. Cons: Everything else. more

Good mexican for the price... 6/14/2008

It's really not as bad as some claim it to be. Sure the atmosphere is a little ""outdated"", but the food is good. Those who claim it's too ""greasy"" are most likely ordering the smothered burritos full of cheese and sauces...naturally a greasy meal. I did not find their meals all that greasy, even after ordering their cheese enchiladas. However, mexican food is not exactly the healthiest and is more likely to be greasy considering their recipes. Comes with the territory. Their sauce is definitely a basic red enchilada sauce, not much flare, but for the price and the amount of food you get, who can complain? Their salsa is fairly good. Those who compare it to ketchup baffle me, since it's nothing of the sort. Being a Chef myself, I actually found their food to be rather good. It is no Red Iguana, however it still has it's perks and I find myself going there with friends at least every couple of months for some good, cheap, fast mexican food. Pros: Good mexican, large portions, cheap price Cons: Cheaper looking restaurant, blander taste more

Great Chile Verde! 4/8/2008

It is the greatest authentic Mexican Food in the Salt Lake Valley! I have read the previous reviews and someone mentioned that it was greasy and too much cheese. That's how I like it, the more the cheese and the grease it is the better. These poeple must be health freaks. La Puente is the best around. They have larger portions for the same price as La Frontera. A smothered burrito with cheese is priced at a nice low price which is under $5. Where else can you get a large portion with that kind of price. No where around here! Pros: Smothered Burrito with Cheese, the service is fairly good, and the food is just fabulous. Cons: On Friday's and Saturday nights it's jammed packed, which says that it's a good place. more

just not mexican 1/21/2008

If your looking for an expensive mamerican mexican dining experience, come here. Did not experience any authentic mexican flavors in any food. I got the chiecken soft taco. It was chicken, cheese, lettuce and a flour tortilla. I had to squirt the salsa on it out of the ketchup bottle. The ala carte menu is also cheaper than if you buy the meal. 2 enchilladas and rice is .15 cents cheaper when you buy ala carte. This place does not serve anything that like mexican food. Service is slow. more

grease pit 4/16/2005

the husband & i met up here on a blind date so you think we'd go back often but no way. everything is smothered in greasy cheese and not very authentic. the lighting is way too bright and the place is noisy. Pros: parking Cons: not real mexican more

Visiting 5/2/2003

I am From Los Angeles. I was visiting my Boyriend in Salt Lake, and he suggested going to La Puente. The food was pretty good, and the atmosphere was cool. It was pretty good hangover food. I can't say it was the best. I am Mexican, and I know what authentic mexican food should taste like. more
