Great food and Amazing atmosphere 12/2/2010

Went to this restaurant last night - while the Mall was not very busy this restaurant was really busy and for good reason - the coconut shrimp was the best I have ever had and my friend had the shrimp enchiladas which he loved. The service was some of the best - I wonder what happened to the guy from 9/19 as this was not our experience at all - loved the island atmosphere - we travel often to the islands and this place made us long for another trip - gotta try this one! more

Worst Service I've Ever Seen! Seriously! 9/19/2010

Kokomo's by far gave me the worst service I have ever gotten. Here's the short review: After an hour at the restaurant I never even got a food menu, and those that had ordered food around me never got their food. Now here is the play by play. First 10 minutes: We waited for a server. That's not terrible, so we were still in a good mood. When the server came we asked for a drink menu and a food menu. 5 minutes Later: The server finally comes by with a drink menu. She forgot the food menu. She says she will grab us one. 10 minutes Later: The server takes our drink order but forgets the food menu again. 15 minutes later: The server gives us our drinks, and forgets the food menu again. She says she will get that right away. 30 minutes later: We just go up to the bar and ask the bartender for our bill. We never got a food menu, and the server never came back to our table. There were three other tables doing the same thing as me. Apparently they had been waiting over an hour for their food. We wasted an hour of our lives there, and we will never go back again. There are a lot of good places in MOA you can go to, don't waste your time at Kokomo's. Whenever you have to go to McDonalds after your night at a restaurant just to get some food... well, that's just ridiculous. more

Welcome all parties!!! Time to have some fun!!! 7/20/2010

Living out of town and my whole family in the cities I was in a bind for my daughters graduation party. We decided to have her open house at Kokomo's Island Cafe. I think this was the best decision I have ever made! The management staff and servers were absolutely spectacular! The great thing about their backroom facility was that I hardly had to do any decorations. What a fun theme for our party. Who doesn't love a little Jamaican fun! The management staff let us bring in any decorations that we wanted and they even took care of placing things were I wanted them to go. All I had to do was point. They had great ideas for the event that I didn't even think of and were at my service whenever I needed it. What a relief to have someone else prepare all the food, stage it, keep it full and clean up after. I didn't have to enlist any of my family for help. Plus, I got to enjoy and visit with all the guest. We had around 100 people come to the graudation party. Parents can you think of a more relaxing idea for such a stressful situation. Everyone could not believe how wonderful the food was and what a great variety. The servers were so friendly and helpful they actually felt like family. I love a place that is so comforting. The management staff suggested these cool non-alcholic drinks that were smokin'. And I mean literary smokin'. My daughter couldn't believe it. Fun! Next event that I plan on having will be held at the "Island". The best experience that I have had. I would definately recommend this for a graduation party or any other event that you have. Thank you Kokomo's! Pros: Fabulous staff, service, ideas and food Cons: Nothing that I can think of! more

Not our favorite 2/14/2010

Our waitress was horrible! We noticed other patrons getting great service, but we were treated poorly. I'm actually still waiting for the mustard I ordered yesterday! They nickel and dime you with adding extra fees for anything other than potato chips. Our bill was $12.00 more with adding french fries and 1 order of onion rings to our meals. When our food finally arrived, half of it was cold. My plate was chipped. The entire restaurant felt cheap. We expected something more upscale and comparable to Bubba Gumps/Dave's BBQ/The Rainforest Cafe. Two of our five meals were delicious; the fish tacos and the sweet chili chicken wings. The hampburgers and chicken nuggets (adults version) were subpar to say the least! Overall, it was not a good experience for $70.00. Given the choice, we would not go back. I'm truly sorry to say that because we were really looking forward to going to Kokomo's Island Cafe and they really let us down. Best of luck if you go! Pros: The Fish Tacos & Sweet Chili Chicken Wings were delicious! Cons: Poor service, cheap feel to restaurant, chipped plates. more

ribs! 2/3/2010

I've lived in NC and Chicago, homes of great BBQ but the terriyake ribs here are delicious! soft, tender, fall off the bone - yum! Pros: good food & service! Cons: in a cheesy mall setting more

Authentic Island Escape 7/4/2009

Beats the rainforest cafe in ambience, food and drinks, great coconut shrimp, fish tacos, captain jacks chicken sandwich, fabulous chicken fatbread and jamaician chicken pasta. Everybody in our group were very satisfied with the quality service, food and great tropical drinks. highly recommend, also check out the entertainment! Pros: Food, Music, Cocktails, Fun Cons: No outdoor deck (mall of america) more

A little bit of the Islands right here in Minnesota! 10/7/2008

Looking to get away if only in your mind? Then venture on up to the 3rd floor Mall of America and stroll in to Kokomo's Island Cafe. You will be greeted by friendly "natives" who will escort you to your table or point you in the direction of the Tiki gods welcoming you into the bar for your favorite Boat Drink or libation. The food is a delightful escape from the ordinary. From the JamaicanJerk wings to the Cuban sandwich with a side of Mango Salsa your tastebuds will be doing the limbo. There are plenty of kid friendly items available as well. The wait staff and the bartenders will make you feel like Kokomo's is your corner bar and grill where everybody knows your name, in fact it's not uncommon to find the owners chatting with the customers like old friends. Recently Kokomo's has added live music to the menu adding to the tropical theme of the establishment. I highly recommend Kokomo's if you are looking for a family friendly outing, a quiet place for that first date, an evening out with a loved one or if you just want to kick back and take in the game or chat with good friends in the bar. Kokomo's will make you feel like you just got off the plane in the Islands! The only thing missing is the white sand... Pros: Tropical setting, family friendly Cons: The Mall makes them close too early. more

Avoid it, whenever possible! 8/29/2008

I don't mind dining at the Mall of America. But my first and only experience at Kokomo's was awful. Our table was sticky, the area had a bad smell to it, the bathrooms were dirty, and the food was less than stellar. When we arrived, they had just seated two large parties, and were told that it would be a half hour wait. When you looked in the door, you could see that over half the tables were empty. We waited 20 minutes, and were taken to our table. Our waitress was stretched thin, covering every table within eyeshot. We ordered drinks, which took a while and tasted okay, but didn't get the chance to order for a long time, and after we did, the food arrived too hot for some, too cold for others. It was okay in taste, but for a tastier meal at the same price, just go to T.G.I.Fridays or something. Pros: Good drinks Cons: poor management, lackluster food. more

Great vacation-like atmosphere 8/27/2008

Love the atmosphere and the food is wonderful. I really love the Baha Fish Tacos and the salads are great! This is a very unique place and it just makes you feel as if you are on vacation. more

Great choice at the Mall of America! 8/27/2008

My family and I had such an enjoyable time at Kokomo's Island Cafe! The atmosphere was fun and festive, the wait staff was friendly and attentive to our needs, and the general manager even came and chatted with us, making sure we were having a good time. The food was top notch - the crab cakes were crispy and delicious, the chicken wings were excellent, the fish tacos were perfect, and the key lime pie was out of this world! I can't wait to go back and try out some of their yummy looking salads. If you're at the Mall of America, this is the place to eat! Pros: Great food - great atmosphere - great prices! A+!! Cons: None - I loved the place! more

Best food and service 5/21/2008

My wife and I recently decided to hold a group function at this location; what a good choice. The food was outstanding: crab cakes the best ever, coconut shrimp perfect and the grouper entree was a perfect flavor combination. The service was superior; we had 2 servers that waited on us hand and foot. I would highly recommend anyone who is having a group function or just lunch for 2 to make the extra steps to have it Kokomos Island Cafe. Pros: Ambience, service, food Cons: none more

Great Place for a Wedding!! 12/31/2007

Though we live in Tucson, AZ, we had our wedding ceremony and reception at Kokomo's. Nick was great to work with, the service was excellent and everything went very smoothly. We had the Platter dinners as a buffet and they were delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. Unfortunately, we won't be back till next summer. Thanks again to Kokomo's for a job well done!! more

Never again 11/14/2007

I am a store manager at MOA. My district manager was visiting and we went to lunch. Neither of us had tried Kokomo's yet, so decided to try it. The greeter was friendly, and seated us quickly. It was mid afternoon and not many patrons were there. Our waiter greeted us, got our drinks and took our order. Our food arrived quickly, hot and very tasty. We were talking shop as a six legged creature decided to crawl across the table and join us. I called the waiter over who immediately got the manager who stated it didn't happen often and that it was because they were in the mall and their facility couldn't do anything about it; showing no surprise whatsoever. Now, I work in the mall and eat there every day. This has NEVER happened before. I can assure you it won't be a Kokomo's. Pros: good food Cons: customer satisfaction, needs Orkin more

Best Coconut Shrimp in Town - Party atmosphere too! 8/10/2007

I have to admit that after reading the 2006 reviews I almost did not try this restaurant but friends talked me into it and I am very glad they did! This restaurant is awesome - the food is great and the servers were quite attentive. My company had its Holiday party there and we had the best Holiday party ever. We all dressed for the "islands", did an island scavenger hunt for prizes, had island beers and cocktails, great hor de ourve buffet and then dinner, island music all night and just alot of fun - nothing fancy just fun and something different! The times I have been there for dinner I thoroughly enjoyed the food - coconut shrimp is fantastic - best in the City (well maybe Lord Fletchers is a little better), Captain Jacks chicken sandwich is a great twist on a chicken sandwich with grilled pineapple, avacado spread and a raspberry kick - tired of chicken sandwiches? try this one! Our kids loved the made from scratch mac n cheese which you don't find very often any more - fish tacos were fabulous - we have not had a bad meal or drink any time we have been there - if you are looking for a 4 star restaurant, this is not it - it might be "cheezy" as some reviewers say but it does feel like the caribbean - almost makes me wonder if they have been to the caribbean! If you have been to the caribbean you will know that nothing moves quick and everyone has a great time! If you have seen the previous reviews I encourage you to give this place a try - you will be happy you did! Pros: food, drinks, atmosphere, service Cons: previous reviews more

Not such a good experience..... 8/1/2007

I have visited Kokomo's two times in the last month and my only question is what is the managements take on their bartenders being wasted? The first time my friend and I were there the bartender (Mike, for inquiring minds) was clearly drunk, obnoxious, making inappropriate comments and not even trying to hide the fact that he was taking shots faster than he could pour them. We were completely ignored while he socialized with other workers and boozed it up. Despite the poor service, I returned two weeks later and guess what? The same bartender was now a patron at the bar being even more obnoxious, inappropriate and loud than the last time. How are employees allowed to drink at their place of employment, either on or off duty?? I won't go back -- his comments and actions were too offensive to overlook. And the food was terrible. Slow, cold, overpriced and overall terrible. Sorry Kokomo's but customers with any type of dignity are looking for a more professional staff. Pros: ??? Cons: Many, read the review more

Great Food, Service, and Ambiance 6/12/2007

When I logged on and searched Kokomo's I was suprised to see there was poor reviews. Because my experience there far exceded my expectations and then some. What a great place. The Staff was friendly and attentive and the food was fantastic. This past Sunday myself and my family came into Kokomo's looking for a fun place to have a rest and a good meal. What a great choice Kokomo's was. The Kids loved it and the food was fantastic. We were greated almost immediatley after being seated. Our Server, Charles was friendly and attentive. What a breath of fresh air this was compared to other resturaunts we had been to recently. Buisness was moderate to busy but you wouldn't have known it by the type of service we recieved. Drinks were brought quickly. Refills were recieved without request and the food we ordered was delivered in a timley fasion. The kids had Chicken Fingers. My wife had the Fish Tacos and I had The Blackend Grouper, which was suggested by our server. What a GREAT choice. One of the better meals I have had that wasn't home cooked in quite some time. Near the end of our meal Charles suggested we order the Key Lime pie. Because of the generous portions of food we declined the offer but it gives us something to look foward to on our next visit. I highly recomend this place. Great food, service, and ambiance at Kokomo's Island Cafe. Pros: Service, Food, Ambiance Cons: Not many, Except maybe suggest that the silver ware be rolled up. more

For the worst dining experience of your life... 1/28/2007

Let's say that if you would enjoy a tacky restaurant that serves horrible food, Kokomo's is the place to go. The service was horrible and the waitress actually sat down in a chair to take our order. She not only forgot our appetizers but admitted that the pizza would take longer to make than our meal! The food was old, over-salted and over-onioned. That's right, if you order seafood paella, you will get some rice with your onions. The pork-jerk sandwich was dry, rough and looked like it was scraped from some old ribs, placed into a dry bun and smothered in barbeque sauce. If your order includes garlic bread, you might as well ask for a substitution. It consists of the same loaf used for hoagies and dipped in butter and topped with chunks of raw garlic. You'll never get a refill on a drink and never order beer. It comes to you skunky and warm. Pros: I did feel like I was in a tacky Orlando restaurant. Cons: Horrible service and even more disgusting food. more

Tops all of our experiences for worst ever. Stay clear. 11/15/2006

A group of us are meeting for dinner and then a movie. It's a Wednesday evening, but it's even quiet by weeknight standards at this place. We can see that there is not a single name on the reservation list at the greeter's stand. Not a good sign. We are obviously seated right away and our waiter comes quite shortly thereafter with a helper. (Person in training?) Out of the five of us seated, the two of them manage to get drink orders from two of us before scurrying off. About two minutes later, one of them comes back and asks, "What did you want again?" Nice try at the save. The evening goes on like this. The final two of our party join us, and wait over 20 minutes for their drinks until we flag down the waiter and remind him. Later on, one of our party is still left without food nearly another 15 minutes after the rest of us have been served. The waiter doesn't even notice this fact until it is pointed out to him. The person missing his meal has lost his appetite at this point and refuses even a comped meal when it is finally offered to him. The night culminates not with stunning array of bills being goofed up, but the fact that the guy who never ate a meal s handed a bill of nearly $50! At this point, he gets up to talk to the manager. While upset, all the manager can do is explain that he attempted to comp a meal, and that if that wasn't good enough, he was going to be escorted out. That's right, the manager's response was "I can ask you to leave." So, we did. None of us have ever walked out on a bill in our lives, but we did this night. I'm still stunned by the perpetual ineptitude of the waiter and even more stunned at how the manager chose to deal with it. It wasn't just us; the table behind us was upset at the utter lack of service. The drinks were a disaster. The food was okay, but lost in the horrendous experience. We're never going NEAR the Kokomo's Island Cafe again. Pros: Food seemed okay, but not stellar. Cons: Almost hostile service. A complete wreck. more
