Kanki Japanese House Of Steaks

I went to Kanki for my friends birthday! The waite for a table was really long! We finally got to the table and got our orders taken and the chef cooked our food right infront of us! He done tricks and seasoned the food just right. I would reccomend this place to anyone because the food is great and the staff was friendly! The downside is that if you do go eat here you better bring your paycheck because it is expensive!! I paid $80.00 for 2 people to eat!! Left there full but wallet was empty!! more

Kanki is one of the best in the triangle for sushi. I haven't been to Waraji for years, so I don't know which is better, but Kanki is the best at least in the Durham/Chapel Hill area in my opinion. The chef is from Japan, and he makes good sushi, both nigiri and non-traditional rolls. When i go there, I go to the sushi bar section and just get sushi. The hibachi section is good and entertaining, but not worth the money for me. The atmosphere and service aren't that great, but I'm still giving it 5 stars because their sushi is very good. more

Kanki's sushi is really, really good. It's a little on the pricey side but you definitely get what you pay for. I am not particularly a fan of hibachi but I think even that's good there. Everytime I go the food is always differently prepared. Which ranges from Below Average to Decent. This is why I always order Sushi, which I love the Krazy Train! more

in my opinion, kanki has some of the best sushi in the triangle, and definitely the best in durham/chapel hill. the standards are done well, and they have some more unique rolls that are really outstanding (some of my favorites are the deep sea roll, the akebono roll, and the lovestar). and while the hibachi part of the restaurant can get crowded, it doesn't usually take long to get a seat in the sushi area (especially not if you eat after 8pm, which I usually do). in terms of hibachi, I can really only compare it to kurama and shiki, and it's better than either (although a little more expensive as well). of course, the food is somewhat americanized, but if you want non-americanized japanese food, north carolina probably isn't the place to find it. more

Everything on their menu is the American stereotype of Japanese food. It seems like every restaurant in the Triangle claiming to be serving Japanese food has to have sushi, tempura, teriyaki, the token grilled fish, and what they claim to be ""hibachi"" style cooking. Just for clarification, ""hibachi"" refers to a charcoal pit/grill, which is non-existent in most of these restaurants. If you ever have the opportunity to try real ""hibachi"" cooking, I highly recommend it, especially if they serve ""wagyu"" and ""black pork"". You won't find any of those at Kanki's. The sushi there is also average because they don't carry many distinguishing ingredients. I just can't give my recommendation if the restaurant only serves average stereotypical Japanese food. One more thing. No Japanese chef in their right mind would serve rice with soy sauce poured on it. That would be an insult to the delicate flavors of rice. more

As a big teppanyaki fan, I was excited to try Kanki. Unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. The food was just alright, and for better taste and less $$, there are other Japanese steakhouses where you can get larger portions for literally half of Kanki's prices. As far as ambiance, Kanki is artfully and attractively decorated, but due to the wide open layout and cramming of as many tables as possible into the dining room space, it is less than intimate; and loud, crowded, and smoky. For intimate dining, you're probably better off elsewhere. Wait time is also quite lengthy, even if you call ahead for reservations. For the price, value, and ambiance, you'll be far more pleased skipping Kanki and choosing another Japanese steakhouse instead. Pros: good for groups, entertaining chefs, kid-friendly Cons: very overpriced, crowded dining room, long wait more

Good food, fun atmosphere, great for celebrating birthdays and events. When my children are asked where they want to go for dinner, this is a consistent first choice! Good sushi chef, have never been disappointed. Pros: moderately pricey, great sushi more

This is my favorite Asian restaurant in the Durham area so far. The sushi bar is excellent --- no food poisoning yet (unlike my experience with a few other sushi places in the area), and the hibachi grill entrees are a delight. Dinner is rather pricey at $18.95+ per dinner, but lunch hibachi is a real bargain. The same hibachi portion as you get for dinner, but with EITHER soup OR salad, but at only $8.95. Great deal. Huge fish tank at inside with a big googly-eyed fish that comes down to greet you. Delightful Japanese atmosphere. When a waiter was tipped off that it was my birthday, they brought me a full cake that was delicious. Not sure why this place has just a 7.4 on here. Worth stopping by if you like sushi and hibachi. This is your traditional hibachi Japanese restaurant where you get to watch the chef cook your dinner in front of you on a huge teppan (flat grill). Your dinner includes miso soup, salad (just a bunch of iceberg lettuce with your choice of dressing), shrimp appetizer, side of vegetables (onions and zucchini), fried rice and entree. The restaurant is clearly designed for entertaining, including young children, and they offer several special occasion packages so you don't have to bring the cake and balloons. The filet and salmon are cooked well, and the shrimp appetizer/entree is also tasty. There's also a great fish tank in the foyer in case you have to wait for a table or the rest of your party (they won't seat you until your entire party is present).
