I feel this restaurant is too expensive for the amount of food you receive. I would say if you like the presentation more than the food value this is the place for you.

Awesome food, Excellent service 3/29/2009

I felt the need to share after reading the bad reviews regarding the service. I just got back from dinner and happy hour there, and had excellent service both from the bar, and at the table. The staff from the moment we walked in and were greeted by the hostess, until we left at the end, could not have been more gracious and friendly. The bartender was accomodating and tried to make my friend a grape martini, even though it wasn't on the menu, and even experimented and gave him a sample before making him order. The waiter was excellent and so friendly. The food was great. Being from the east coast, and having been to many restaurants in NYC, this place certainly stacks up, only with better service. My friend had the iceberg lettuce to start, I had the Jax chowder, both great, and large in portions. Then, he had the scallops, and the mushroom bread pudding was unbelievable. I had the special, Jambalya, which was not only large in portion, but delicious. We shared the banana beignets for dessert, and we both were moaning with pleasure! And the bill was completely reasonable, and surprisingly low. We were both so pleased, and happy! Pros: food, service more

great food, once you get a seat 12/17/2008

We went to Jax on Saturday, December 6th. The hostess was pretty bad, and because we weren't sure if we were ordering off the happy hour menu or the regular one, she kept trying to put our daughter (23 months old) on a bar stool with no arms and no back. When I tried to get an actual seat (it was 4:30, the dining room was empty. The tables were covered with white paper and had little cups of crayons on them) she resisted and brought our daughter a high chair that put her head easily a foot below the bar were her food would sit. She placed the high chair out in the middle of the aisle, blocking people from one side of the bar from getting to the restroom. Even though I had made it clear that we were purchasing a gift certificate that would more than cover the price of two adult meals and the dining room was empty, we still couldn't get a seat. We finally just ordered full price appetizers so that we could get a seat that wasn't likely to cause our child injury. Once we actually got a table, our food was amazing and the waiter and the manager were very nice. I found the server very accommodating and we tried a lot of different food. The salads were crisp and fresh. The sliders and polenta were outstanding. The calamari was tender and the kids menu was expansive. Everyone was very pleasant and we were impressed with the experience overall. Next time -- we will run past the hostess, get a seat and get to the good stuff. Fun atmosphere, great staff 8/25/2008

This place is a gem! I recently brought my daughter to CU and as we were shopping around one day we asked many of the people in the stores recommendations of where we should grab an early dinner. Besides The Kitchen and Ten Ten Brasserie, Jax came up over and over. We thought we would give it a try! It did not disappoint - great wine list, oysters, and service. We just sat at the bar which was fun and casual. Highly recommended! more

Growing up an hour from San Fran, seafood was part of my life. Not only was it available everywhere, but my mom was a scuba instructor, so we had fresh fish most of my childhood. Many of the best seafood restaurants were on Highway 1 along the coast, and pretty cheap at that, but I've also been to some of the best ones on the West Coast. In Denver, seafood is rare, so you look downtown to the nicer restaurants to find it. Among those at the top the list was Jax. In my twenties, when I needed to be somewhere cool to feel cool, this place would have impressed me, but now, I just want decent service and good food. Jax was loud and overcrowded. My party was sat down so close to two other tables, we actually touched elbows. I wouldn't mind if it was Lazio's in Eureka, or the Sandpiper, where the party sitting next to you was friendly. The food was priced like Kuletto's in SF. The portions were small, but overall pretty good. The atmosphere was somewhat hip, if a little smug, and that doesn't improve the experience. Fifteen minutes after ordering drinks, I finally went up to the bar where they were sitting and retrieved them myself. Pros: Food was good, if a little skimpy Cons: Expensive, overcrowded, staff is slow and smug more

Horrible service 6/28/2007

I went to Jax on a Sunday afternoon for happy hour. The hostess told us to sit anywhere in the restaurant, but after a while a waitress rudely told us we were not allowed to sit there and should move to a side of the bar and a cocktail waitress would serve us. Ha! We sat for over ten minute while the bartenders gave us wierd looks, the cocktail waitress chatted with some men on the other side of the room and the waitress who made us move blatently ignored us. We weren't even given menus. It wasn't all that busy and there were plenty of staff members, so I have no idea why we were treated so rudely. When we got up to leave we only received more dirty looks from the staff. I can't comment on the food, but I won't be going back because of the horrible service. Pros: Good happy hour prices Cons: Horrible service more

Great Happy Hour 8/26/2006

Went for happy hour, specifically the 75 cent oysters. They were great, along with the coconut shrimp and tuna ceviche, both $3 each. Wonderful happy hour deals, great food and very friendly service. Pros: happy hour deals, service more

An exceptional experience 11/10/2005

The crab cakes were some of the best I've had in the country - easily in the top three. The chipotle louie sauce accompanyment was a unique and pleasant plus - not too hot, but just enough to really compliment the crab. The lobster and shrimp chowder was decent, but nothing to write home about. I opted for the moonfish with porcini mushrooms and pomegranate and green curry sauce. Well prepared and flavorful, this dish did not disappoint. Topping off the meal was the well reviewed Key Lime pie. Flavor wise, this was one of the best I've ever tasted. It was a little soft for my taste, but did not detract from the experience. The crust could not have been more perfect, thin and firm. Service was excellent with warm and very friendly staff, though it's noisy and a little difficult to communicate even when right next another person. Pros: exquisite food, friendly staff Cons: noisy, a little cramped, a little pricey more

  • In Short
Jax fills early with 30-somethings who can afford the meal or occasional groups of students out to splurge. Many hover around the bar sipping infused vodka martinis or the infamous spicy shrimp bloody mary. Art covers the narrow space's walls, and every red brick is scrawled with someone's name or philosophy. The seafood is the fresh, from the raw oyster bar to the filet mignon of tuna with scallion hash browns.
