No RESERVATIONS 4/20/2011

I've been here before and it was eh. I went again and it service was terrible. My friends wanted to stop by here for Sat. for a party of 6 and they do not accept reservations-which means you just stand there and wait...and wait... so we did. FAIL. more

Overhyped 3/1/2011

Over priced as well. Service wasn't bad, but not stellar. Of our table of four, one Latin dish was cold, one Latin dish had meat that needed a chain saw, one roll looked like a five year old rolled it, and my roll tasted so funny I only ate one piece and told the waiter to bring me some soup. I want to see the Town Center to do well, but places like this will have to step up their game. more

Japanese guy marries a Latin girl and they both cook!! 8/13/2010

This is my favorite sushi place in Houston/Sugar Land. Not only because their food is great, but also because of all the very different choices you have. Sushi, Latin food, salads, sandwiches, soups etc. It's great for a date or a night out with the kids. You can have a conversation and listen to nice Latin music at the same time. I have been going to Japaneiro's for about 8 yrs and I'm always happy. The menu changes from time to time to have new things, but keeps the old favorites- keep it up Japaneiro's! more

The food is good, but the service isn't 7/19/2010

First time I ate at the restaurant, no problems. It was a Saturday night, so it was busy, which was to be expected. The food was very good, so I returned in May 2010 to buy a gift certificate for a friend. I didn't buy the gift certificate because of the horrible service I received the day I went back. The hostess told me to wait in the bar, which I did for I almost 10 minutes with my 2 young daughters. (I'm not sure why she didn't try to get someone for me b/c it wasn't busy.) The restaurant was less than half full, lots of empty tables, so the lunch crowd had already left. My daughters and I were the only people in the bar area. A man dressed in plain clothes walked through twice, but didn't acknowledge me. Then a woman walks up with a $50 bill and within minutes this man helps her, selling her 2 $25 gift certificates, then he walks away from the bar before I can even get his attention. I turn to the hostess who is watching the whole thing and ask, ""Is this the bartender I've been waiting for?"" She said, ""Yes, would you like to speak to a manager."" I said, ""Please,"" and she returns with the same man. I was very surprised this person was the manager and that he had ignored me now 3 times. I began to explain how I had been waiting to make my purchase and he ignored me both times he came through the bar area to which he said, ""I didn't ignore you. I smiled at your daughters twice. I thought you were waiting on a table."" At this point I'm very annoyed because he didn't seem to care or take responsibility for not helping me. So I told him, ""If you had asked me if I had been helped, you would have known I was here to buy a gift certificate. However, if this is the type of service you provide, I don't want my friends to come here."" Then I left vowing to myself to never go back there. Unfortunately, I had a meeting at Japaneiro's earlier this evening. I had decided I wasn't going to eat, but 3 others at my table were. The waitress came by to take the order and the first person ordered dumplings while the other 2 women were still looking at the menu. The waitress asked the person who ordered, ""Is that all?"" The lady answered, ""Yes,"" meaning that was all she was ordering. The next woman began to order and the waitress walked away. We didn't see the waitress again until she delivered the dumplings at that point the other two people ordered. After tonight's strange experience I believe the manager, wait staff and hostess don't understand customer service is important in food industry. Having great food is only part of it, if you don't offer good service people won't return. Oh and the same manager was there again tonight. I never saw him go around and check on tables. He mostly stood back where the servers pick up the food to deliver to tables. Pros: food is good Cons: service is horrible more

Happenin' Place 6/19/2010

We live over in Seabrook close to Kemah, so this was a venture out away from our traditional spots for dinner. We were awe-struck by the beauty of the First Colony Mall area, since we have no mall near this nice, out on the Gulf side of town. Japaneiro's was super busy on the Friday night we attended, so we sat in the bar area to wait for a table. The bar area was so nice, we decided to simply eat there at the chest-high tables. We tried two of the ""Japarita"" mixed drinks (Japaneiro's version of a Margarita). They were really delicious and decidedly quite ""potent""! We followed this by getting the shrimp tempura, Kamakazi roll, and Hottate roll. The Hottate Maki roll had huge slices of scallops rolled in the middle of the red rice paper, and was really delicious. The Kamakazi roll was way too peppery and rolled too small for my taste; my fiance agreed. We followed our sushi sampling by ordering two ""Pepito"" latin-styled sandwiches; mine had tempura shrimp, while my fiance's had grilled chicken. They were both very good, but too dry; they should offer mayo or dressing of some kind with their Pepitos. The prices were reasonable, the restaurant was definitely a Happening Place with lots of people, buzz and excitement, and the waiters and hostesses were very attentive. With a little more attention to their sushi detail and some carpet on the floors and walls to absorb the extreme noise level, this could be a five star spot. Until then, I can only offer up three stars. But the atmosphere is definitely a ""must try"" if you're looking for a popular, buzzing spot in the SugarlandHouston area. Pros: Buzzing with Chat and Unusual Offerings Cons: Parking is a pain to find here at this mall area more

Easily our favorite place to eat. 6/14/2010

We've eaten at Japaneiro's at least twice a month for years. The hardest part of eating there is not getting carried away ordering. Between my interest in trying new things and my husband's habit of ordering his favorites, we've ended up with a full meal's worth of leftovers on several occasions. It's honestly just about the only place I've NEVER had anything bad. Even dishes that aren't really my thing were still interesting to try and highly edible. I was in the mood for something new, so I went for the Crudo Sampler on our most recent visit. The presentation was beautiful, almost like a floral arrangement made of sushi. And better than how it looked was how it tasted! I even ate the tamago, which I normally can't stand. Theirs was actually good, with a light delicate flavor I didn't expect from past experience. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. They're knowledgeable about the menu and very helpful when you're not exactly sure what you want. Combined with the relaxed, friendly atmosphere, a trip to Japaneiro's is a bit like visiting family. My only real regret is I COULD have tried it months earlier, but I was intimidated by the idea of ""fusion food"". I'm so glad I let my curiosity win! Pros: amazing food, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere Cons: can be pricy, occasionally crowded due to the great food more

Japaneiro's - your best Sushi/Sashimi choice in Houston 4/27/2010

This is the best - great quality seafood, great atmosphere, outstanding sushi/sashimi. Having traveled and eaten it all over including NYC, Chicago, Detroit, LA - born outside N.O. - quality seafood is a must. Never had sushi before?? Try it here. Take a date/take a group - order Chef's Nirvana for their best and creative sushi/sashimi/rolls, then if group is big enough try West Coast sampler or other. So fresh hard to believe it's not cooked. Located just off Hwy59 at Hwy6/Tx Drive in Sugarland. Worth the drive when I'm in town. Great service - great food - Chef's Nirvana!!! Pros: Excellent food! Creative sushi chefs, outside seating Cons: Parking (garage nearby) more

Great food 3/1/2010

The food it's very good, although it's called a ushi place it's more a latino food place. But no complaints since all the lunchs are very good. If the prices were a little lower, this would be a daily place to go. Pros: Food Cons: Priced more

Overpriced 11/27/2009

This place should not call itself a sushi or japanese restaurant whatsoever. Selection of sushi rolls are laughable. The combinations are horrible. The rolls are extremely overpriced as well as the other items on the menu. I couldn't believe 4 tiny pieces of the dumplings cost $6.00!! I will not ever be coming back to this supposed Japanese restaurant. If you're an authentic sushi restaurant lover, I would not recommend this place. Pros: Good atmosphere Cons: Not real sushi more

Top class establishment 7/29/2009

My wife and I frequent this restaurant and have nothing but praise for them. The sushi is always fresh and their rolls are great, especially the Hawaiian. Their Latin dishes add a twist to a normal sushi experience. Everyone on their waitstaff that we have had was very attentive and informative. We'll continue to dine here regularly. Pros: competent waitstaff, outstanding food more

Food is delicious and so full of flavor! 7/20/2009

Went for happy hour (which i believe was 3-7pm) and i loved it! Me and my boyfriend just ordered off the happy hour menu and it was soooooo good!!! I live in Cypress, so its about 1 hour away from me, but it was good I am thinking of going back this week and maybe the next... and every week until i am tired of it. Its cheap (since its happy hour) and so flavorful. We got the California Roll, shrimp dumplings, crab puffs, yucitas... our favorite were the dumplings - just wish they'd give more in the order (its only 4) and the crab puffs, so different than the usual crab puffs you're used to getting. So so delicious.. Pros: food, happy hour menu more

NO WAY 5/5/2009

I think the people who go to Japaneiro's dont know sushi...This place is disgusting. Fried everything and full of evrything that does not belong!! My sushi was so bad I could not finish it...too much fried outlayer. The sushi had no flavor....This place offer fusion sushi- not the REAL deal. The service was EXTREMELY slow...Don't waste your time or money- if you want REAL sushi- go somewhere else. Pros: clean Cons: service, food, parking more

Awesome!! 4/17/2009

My fiance and I always have date night on Fridays and we honestly got tired of all the usual places. We wanted to go out to a place that was up beat, fun to have a few drinks, and great food of course. This place by far is my favorite the food is delicious and the atmosphere is perfect for a date or even a group of people. My fiance is not a huge fan of sushi but once he tried the sushi here he was hooked especially their specialty rolls ,but they have so much more for others that do not like sushi. I can agree with another reviewer that the wait staff could be a little more cheerful but as for the wait for food and mix ups ...this place gets extremely busy so of course they are not always going to be perfect and the wait time for food can take a while. Pros: Great sushi, atmosphere, tempura!!! YUM Cons: the wait ....but its worth it !!!! more

BEST OF THE BEST!!! 2/23/2009

I am a LOYAL Japaneiro's customer. My first visit was the first or second week that they opened several years ago. Their service & food are OUTSTANDING and I always feel like a valued customer when I go there. This is a great neighborhood spot & I would & do reccommend it to all of my friends!! The sushi is awesome & the sauces just give it that special touch.. AWESOME!!!!! Pros: Location.. Service.. Food.. Total package more

Good rolls for the most part, horrible service. 2/4/2009

Dont get me wrong, its good. I wouldn't branch out and say its the best. I think our biggest complaint is we have had a few bad services. At one point they forgot my son's meal, then they ran out of the chicken for my son's meal, and then they reluctantly made him some beef (only other thing on the kids menu was shrimp which he won't eat). That took another 25 mins to cook up something that should have taken 7 max. Besides that there are a few gentlemen waitstaff that are just either rude or incredibly slow and have no desire to be there. Some of the girls we have had have been good though. And lately since I am pregnant, I have had to venture out to the cooked rolls. Unfortunately I have found that consistency is not their strong suit. But all in all, if they have a stronger waitstaff we would go back as I haven't found any other place good in Sugarland. But because of our bad experience with the waitstaff, we have decided to go elsewhere. Pros: Good sashimi, good non-cooked rolls Cons: Horrible waitstaff, bad kids menu more

Great Atmosphere and good food few exceptions 1/14/2009

First thing you want to do when you sit is ORDER THE CRAB PUFFS! Then try out the good sushi and great Ambiance. There are not many things that you can order wrong at this place. But I did order a sandwich and was very disappointed. It was disgusting! Other than that the food was amazing and the environment was clean and friendly. Dessert was amazing also Pros: good sushi; good atmosphere Cons: the sandwiches. more
