Top Quality with out the Newbury Street Attitude 11/3/2006

I have been going to the same salon on Newbury Street for almost 10 years now. After 2 botched colors and cuts from my usual stylist, I decided it was time to try somewhere new. A couple of friends told me about James Joseph Salon and I decided to give it a try. I called the Salon, and spoke with one of the front desk staff who listened to my dillema of changing stylists, and coached me through the process of finding a new stylist. They recommended a couple of different stylist based on my hair type, and what I was looking to have done. They even stayed on the phone with me while I looked at each stylist on their website to see who I thought looked the best for me. After choosing my new colorist and cutter I made my appointment. Pros: BEST STAFF, No Attitude Atmosphere, and Amazing head Massages Cons: No Parking, No Validated Parking more

Nice color, nice stylist. 10/16/2006

I had an appointment at JJS on a Sunday when the stylist called in sick. It was my first visit so I didn't care who I saw but with a small baby at home I couldn't change the time of the appointment. I was sent to the Studio to see Emily. Emily was really pleasant and did a very nice job. I was offered a few free products to make up for the "inconvenience" (I wasn't inconvenienced) which was a nice surprise. I just made my second appointment! Pros: Nice staff Cons: Parking more

A STYLIST who listen's 10/15/2006

So after searching the many salons on Newbury Street I have finally found a stylist who listened to what I wanted in a hair cut. Her name is Taylor, and she gave me exactly what I wanted, and her price was reasonable! I would definately recommend Taylor for anyone who wants a stylist who listens! Pros: Stylists who listens Cons: Street/garage Parking more

refreshing, relaxing, and awesome color 9/22/2006

this place is great- everyone is warm, helpful, and GOOD at their job. my first time there a receptionist suggested Alex for color. She scheduled me a free consult and Alex was able to discuss with me what I wanted. A week later, my experience did not disappoint! My color came out perfect- exactly what I had been looking for. I have been going here for about a year now and Alex is consistent and helpful. this is my new fav! Pros: thursday night drinks, service, atmosphere more

Great salon, a little pricey, bad front desk staff 8/23/2006

One of the worst things about moving cities is not knowing where you'll get your haircut. After I moved to Boston I had a couple of bad experiences until I tried James Joseph salon and now I have been going for over 2 years with the same stylist and colorist. The salon is pretty cool- exposed brick, nice decor, clean and good atmosphere. My stylist- who has gorgeous hair herself- is great: really listens and I have never been unhappy with her work. This place is EXPENSIVE though and can get busy. The major downside is the attitude of the telephone and front desk who manage to be consistently rude and undermine the good work of the stylists and colorists. Also some of the decor is looking a bit tired (like some of the massage chairs that don't work) and could do with freshening up. Also if it gets busy the service can be brusque and you are shunted around the salon so other clients can be seated while you wait for color etc. Pros: Stylists, colorists Cons: Front desk and telephone staff, tired decor more

Great cut at a reasonable price 8/3/2006

After moving to Boston from SF where I'd had the same stylist for YEARS, I was terrified just thinking of the number of bad haircuts I'd have to endure before I found someone new. Lucky for me, a coworker recommended the James Joseph Salon. After just one cut, I knew it was the only salon I'd have to test-drive. Rudina listened to what I was looking for, made some recommendations based on my hair texture and lifestyle, and gave me the perfect cut: conservative enough for my office enviroment, layers to give me volume and curl control, and low maintenance so I don't need to spend an hour getting ready in the morning. I've been back twice since, and have never been less than completely satisfied. Pros: location, knowledgeable stylists, great cuts! Cons: always busy (but I've never had a problem getting an appt) more

An increcible, affordable experience 8/3/2006

I went in to get my highlights touched up. I never know exactly how to state what I want, but Laurie, my stylist, asked me questions about what I had now and how I wanted it to be different. She worked her magic - two shades of highlights and one of lowlights - all while making pleasant conversation. After the rinse, the shampoo girl gave me a heavenly head rub after she washed my hair out. After I blowdried, I was stunned by the gorgeous, natural-looking highlights Laurie had given me. They were exactly what I wanted, even though I wasn't able to say it. And the total? Only $100. Amazing. Definitely give this place a shot - I'm glad I did. Pros: Perfect highlights, very affordable, great music Cons: Parking - just take the T, blowdrying is extra more

Great Haircuts but Front Desk Policy Needs Revamping 7/30/2006

I've loved every single haircut I've received at James Joseph so my gripe is not about the fab haircut I received today. Insead it's about a tipping/payment policy I find quite stupid. Pros: Skilled Stylists, Convienient location Cons: Nonsensical and inconvienient tipping/payment policy more

Great Haircuts but Front Desk Policy Needs Revamping 7/30/2006

I've loved every single haircut I've received at James Joseph so my gripe is not about the fab haircut I received today. Insead it's about a tipping/payment policy I find quite stupid. Upon paying for my haircut I asked to include my stylist's and her assistant's tip on my debit card. Should be no big deal right? Apparently it is a big deal and I was told I could pay the tips on my debit card 'this time only' even though I've always done so in the past with no problem. The issue is that they don't like to keep a stocked cash drawer and doling out cash for their patrons to tip their employees reduces thier drawer and then they have problems giving change to people who pay cash. I payed at total of $14 out in tips, which seems like a pretty insignificant amount to pull from your cash drawer. Imagine if I was loaded with cash and gave them a $100 or $50 and they had to give me change for the tips from that. Their logic on this policy is flawed. Using a debit card is a convienience I rely on--I never carry cash. It's none of my business, nor do I care to make it my business, how an establishment deals with their cash drawer. The bottom line is patrons should not be inconvienienced with the cash on hand issues of the place they are giving their business too. They should not be discouraging tipping and that's what this stupid policy does. Please fix this James Joseph Studio. Thanks. Pros: Skilled Stylists, Convienient location Cons: Nonsensical and inconvienient tipping/payment policy more

rude receptionist 7/30/2006

Ok I called there the other day trying to make an appointment for the first time after I was reading about some great reviews about this place. The guy at the reception was totally rude and was laughing because I had a scheduling conflict. If the receptionist if rude and snoody I wonder what the rest of the place is like. I am sure there are plenty of other places on Newbury Street.. where I get what I pay for. Cons: rude rceptionist more

She is just as good with color and highlighting and honestly my hair has never looked better. She listens, educates, and really cares about customer service.
