New favorite for Indian food 8/20/2011

Great prices for what you're getting. The plating is very pleasing, and the food is fantastic. The chicken masala is what I usually come here for, but I always end up leaving with something different to try at home. They have a huge variety of drinks to try as well. more

Not really Indian 1/10/2010

I'm still not sure why this restaurant is called India. It has nothing to do with Indian food. The food isn't necessarily bad, it's just not Indian. In fact, I'm not sure what it is. Clearly the chefs are not from India. But if you're not fussy, and don't care if it's authentic or not, it's a pretty place to go to see something different. It is on the pricey side as well. Their East Greenwich and Warren locations clearly went out of business for a reason. Pros: Beautiful ambiance Cons: The food more

Not Authentic, Better Food Elsewhere 2/14/2009

Can I give it "zero stars"? This is definitely NOT the greatest Indian Food in the area - or anywhere. The ambience is nice, but that's about it. Food is overpriced and definitely not authentic. If you want GOOD, decently priced Indian food, try "Not Just Snacks" right up the road. Or a little more upscale at "Rasoi" or "Kabob and Curry". One tip - if you see Indians in the restaurant, it has good authentic food - the only people I see in India are fair-skinned!!! Pros: Ambience Cons: Price, Authenticity more

Bastar* child of Indian Food 2/8/2009

My fiancee and I decided to break from our usual haunts and try out India today. We went for the Sunday buffet because buffets are a great way to get the feel of how a restaurant prepares classic indian dishes. I was very disappointed with the price of 12.95, the quality and overall authenticity of the dishes. The chutnies were not home made, the raita had hardly any cucumber and this completely inedible mango chutney tasted as if someone poured an entire container of salt over it. The lentil soup had a strange bitter flavor that tasted like cigar ashes. As for rice, no basmati rice!!! An indian buffet is not complete without basmati. The biryani and palao were both made with cheap white rice, not flavorful aromatic basmati. The rice was not spiced properly. The tandoori chicken was not red/orange and clearly not cooked in a tandoor. It lacked the tang imparted from yogurt and the smokeyness from the tandoor. It was not craveable or delectable as tandoori chicken usually is. A mango curry chicken dish tasted more like standard sweet and sour chicken, not a rich vibrant curry. The naan bread was not handmade and clearly not cooked in a tandoor, more of a grilled or toasted quality. My favorite part of the meal was the fresh cut up fruit with mango sauce and the rice pudding (it contained more rice than the authentic version, I prefer it that way). Overall the quality of the food suffers. It is too bad as the atmosphere is charming and attractive and clean too. The chefs at India should take some of the cooking classes offered at Rasoi. I recommend going to Rasoi or Kabob n' Curry. The food is several dollars cheaper and VERY VERY craveable, way more authentic. Pros: ambience Cons: bad, not authentic, poor quality more

Most Romantic 5/14/2008

This is the best Indian restaurant I have ever visited. The atmosphere is romantic, we sat in the back patio on the swing seats...all I can say is WOW! it transported us some place else. We felt as if we were not in Providence...light music, waterfall, beautiful lighting...just awesome! Food is great and fresh, prices are reasonable, but it was the ambiance that impressed us the most. The staff is helpful and fun. This restaurant is just the right energy. We are hooked...you MUST TRY! Pros: Ambiance, food, great promos on all days, Excellent Saturday and Sunday Buffet Brunch, great bar and drink selection. Cons: Can't think of any. more

This location closed: Go to 1060 Hope St on Providence's East Side 4/4/2008

This place is AMAZING... see all the other reviews for proof of that... but the downtown location is closed. So check out their East Side location at 1060 Hope St... where the ambiance extends to a front and back patio, as well! It's right across from the park at Blackstone Boulevard... truly a perfect setting. more

Great food, ambiance, and special events! 4/4/2008

In addition to their phenomenal, healthy-yet-traditional menu, India Restaurant on Providence's East Side is also increasingly becoming a hot spot for Indian and Middle Eastern Culture in Rhode Island. They've got bellydancers and a henna artist (or two!) every Friday and Saturday night, along with great world music and bollywood movies on silently on the screen (w/ subtitles so you can follow the plot). Their Sunday brunch is a great value, too. They've got so much going on that it's hard to say when is best to go! But pick a weekend date, and reserve the back fireplace area if at all possible... it's very cozy, and clearly the best seat in the house. Pros: great food, ambiance, service, special events, free henna, bellydancing Cons: there's a wait some Friday and Saturday nights ... call ahead to reserve a table to avoid it! more

absolutely incredible 3/18/2007

I went to dinner here on my birthday with 9 friends and it was one of the best dining experiences i have had in a long time. The first thing that struck me was how incredibly welcoming and friendly the entire staff is...I truly have not felt so comfortable and welcome in a restaurant ever. Second is the decor and the music....perfect. And of course -- the food. So many great vegetarian options - everything tastes undeniably authentic but with a bit more modern twist. Exceptional. The sampler basket of all types of naan is a must! Pros: service, ambiance, vegetarian entrees more

Excellent from start to finish! 7/28/2006

Excellent from start to finish! Immediately welcomed by warm and friendly staff, with helpful recommendations and advice. The naan breads were delicious, you must try the assorted basket to truly appreciate what they offer. Curry dishes were also fantastic, tastes that were truly unique and well plated; never overwhelming but still a feast of flavours. Both the chicken and lamb were deliciously tender. Absolutely plan on returning to explore the rest of their menu in the many days to come! Pros: Service, naan bread, curry Cons: Too many tantalizing options to choose from! more

Wonderful 4/27/2005

I have been to India many times and each time has been great. Not only are the servers knowlegable enough to answer all my allergy concerns, but they are even extremely willing to explain anything on the menu to a first time guest, as most people I take there are. Terrific atmosphere, wonderful in great weather when the patio is open. more

AWESOME!! 2/14/2005

The food and ambience was just fantastic. Got the value for the money and had a great sever who was more than helpful. I would definetely recommend it to any one wanting to try the Indian cuisine in it's most authentic preparation. more

great atmosphere 7/12/2004

Great atmoshpere but service needs some work. India is a great date spot for its atmosphere and good food. On a few occasions the service has let me down with forgotten or mixed up orders. It might serve you to double check your order if you call one in! Pros: romantic, great drinks Cons: , service, service more

Transported to India everytime 4/19/2003

This is more an experince than just dining. Everytime we walk into the door we are greeted with a happy smile and from that moment you feel as if you are a royal guest in their homeland. The smell of the spices and Tandori oven floats in the air. Colourful paintings and artifacts surround you while you dine. This place is outstanding Pros: parking, great value, almost never wait more

Spice up your Life!!! 10/15/2002
