Over the course of 15 years, I have adopted 2 dogs from the Humane Society of Parkersburg, and dropped off a couple of stray dogs there, hoping their owners would find them there....

NO STARS IS NOT AN OPTION. THIS IS NOT A SAFE, NOR A FRIENDLY PLACE.I AM PRAYING FOR THE HELPLESS, VOICELESS ANIMALS THAT ARE IN THEIR "CARE."

My Experience withHSOP 2/1/2017

Over the course of 15 years, I have adopted 2 dogs from the Humane Society of Parkersburg, and dropped off a couple of stray dogs there, hoping their owners would find them there. I have always found their staff to be kind, compassionate, and helpful. I have visited often, and have been impressed with the cleanliness and orderliness of the organization. more

They killed my cats 7/6/2016

I was in the process of moving to a new cat acceptable apartment, when my roomate surrendered my cats, both of which were chipped. I was not notified about their surrender, nor does the "Humane" society have any record of them being their. After a week of calling them they finally tell me that they were both put down? Really..Nice Job! more

Not very well ran 6/19/2016

In my experience of going into this facility; Its a very dirty looking facility. The people who run the place and volunteer are very rude as well. If you ever have to give up an animal just know your situation will be on their social media site. more

Not up to par 5/27/2011

This city's humane society is in need of a serious overhaul; they currently do not accept any animals to be adopted out... they will only euthanize within hours of receiving the animals. Reaching them can be very difficult, as they do not keep to the posted hours (which are limited enough already). Some of the staff were helpful and compassionate, while most seemed bitter and standoffish. The building itself is in sorry shape, which doesn't help the eerie vibe of the place. I was thoroughly disappointed; if Marietta can maintain such a higher standard of care why can't Parkersburg? more

vet check 12/15/2009

when we adopted a cat from this humane society we expected an animal that was vet checked and healthy. After taking the cat to the vet within the 72 hrs , we found out it had several problems. One being a dislocated hip and broken leg! The vet was able to find this problem as an injury over a month old possibly from being hit by a car. Surgery could be $300 for a cat I've had three days! In that three days I had already bought worm ,ear mite and pain medicine! When I went to talk to the humane society [At first they they didn't want to talk to me] but I came back and was told basically that it was not their responsibility and the cat looked fine in their care [just limped]. I asked why their vet had not seen the problems this cat had. They told me they didnt have time to look at every cat! They said as a pet owner you should expect vet bills. No I didnt expect to get a sick cat !!! After two weeks of the cat not being able to walk and in pain they called to say they would pay half "even if the cat hurt itself playing" and that the mouth infection was treated and all gone. No the vet had done nothing to its mouth! I went in to talk to their vet to ask questions like how old is the cat , what is its over all health like, what will it be like after the surgery but I have yet to meet "their vet" ! What upsets me is that the humane society doesnt want to admit they let a cat be adopted that had a broken leg and dislocated hip that needs surgery . They want to say the cat hurt it in my care when the vet could tell the injury was over a month old. They have offered to pay half for surgery but I dont know what kind of health the cat will have in the future, plus its an outside cat when they told me it was an inside one. It sits by the door meowing and trying to get out all day. The whole attitude of the director was not one of helping and caring but more of denying the cat was hurt when in their care . They act friendly if you adopt but if something goes wrong they will not be quick to admit it or fix it. more

A slap in the face. 9/3/2009

In attempts to give a dog a loving home, I was denied. The dog was going to be an outside pet (not by any choice of my own) but was not going to be neglected, tied to a box, or forgotten by any means. In knowing who I was and that I was present at the shelter DIRECTLY in front of them, they proceeded to call my home and inform my family that I wasn't allowed to have the dog. I found it to be a slap in the face. I love animals and was insulted at the fact that they would presume I would neglect it just because it would be outdoors. I will never adopt from this shelter again. I found my current dog in the Bulletin Board and he is anything but neglected. He goes to the park, car rides, on family vacations and gets regular flea/tick meds and baths. He is WELL taken care of. If they expect to find these dogs loving homes, I suggest that start showing people some common courtesy. more

Parvus Virus in Puppies 1/16/2007

I adopted a puppy through the James Heult Memorial Foundation in York, PA. She originally came from this Humane Society and was spade at 6 weeks and infected with the Parvus Virus. this virus takes 7 to 10 days to show up, so it definitely happened at this kennel. Beware! This disease is painful and very expensive. Do not adopt from this humane society. more
