Fall of a Legend 7/31/2010

I once regarded Hill's Lexington as one of the better BBQ restaurants in Winston-Salem. Either the economy or stingy management has put an end to this opinion.\r \r Recent visits have experienced stingy and curt service and the worst sin of the BBQ belt: Unremarkable BBQ.\r \r Bland BBQ with very little sauce. On a scale of 1-10, and compared to normal BBQ for this area, I give this a 3. I've have better BBQ in local cafeterias.\r \r It is obvious that the care required to make good pork BBQ has been forsaken for cost cutting measures. \r \r I wish them well for old times sake. I won't be back. There are too many places working hard to please to pay good money for mediocre. more

Barbecue joint with no ribs ?? 7/30/2009

What can you say about Hill's Barbecue?... Well to start with they are a barbecue place that doesn't have any ribs ... or barbecue sauce. They serve "chipped, chopped, or blocked" which are 3 different ways for them to cut up roast pig butt. On the side is a "dipping sauce" which has the consistency of a vinaigrette. They servers were nice but didn't bring the bread until we finished our plates, even after asking 3 times. Also the house bread is hush puppies. The people were nice, and the meals were a decent value... if you were the 1/6 in our party that actually ate it. more

Hill's Barbecue 9/27/2008

This place has been in Winston since 1951. Their barbecue used to be excellent, but something has changed in the past year. Not the same flavor as before. The service is not as good as it used to be either. I still go here when wanting some barbecue. The barbecue is good; just not as flavorful as before. However, the banana pudding is more than outstanding. I would go just for the pudding. Still a pretty good restaurant - just needs to improve the service and flavor of the 'cue. more

Owner Message
  • “Started by Joe Allen Hill in 1951, Hill's Lexington Barbecue in Winston-Salem is the first to have the name “Lexington Barbecue,” thus their claim to being the “original” Lexington barbecue. At the time they opened there were a few small side street barbecues in Lexington operated by Stamey, Beck and Swicegood. But none called their barbecue place “Lexington Barbecue.”. *Catering Services Available* *Fast Service* *Locally Owned and Operated*
