Best pastrami in SoCal 5/13/2010

Ever since Togos went to a lower grade of pastrami and microwaves instead of steaming, The Hat is the only game in town for classic pastrami. I recommend the double-dip au jus. If you ask nicely, they'll pack a 'lunch kit - with the ingredients and bun and au jus packed separately so you can put it together and nuke it up for lunch the next day. The pastrami burger with cheese is also awesome, and only order the onion rings if you and company have the appetite to polish off a gallon-size bag! Pros: fast service, generous portions Cons: no locations in L.A. or SF Valley. more

THE WHITE CASTLE OF PASTRAMI 6/11/2008

This place is to pastrami what White castle is to burgers. Not quite the real thing but tastes great!\r For true pastrami go to Langers. But this is tasty and relatively cheap. ($6.79 a sandwhich)\r I'll be back! more

Don't forget the Burgers! 10/8/2007

Obviously The Hat is renowned for its pastrami. However, do not forget their burgers! We tried them on a whim one day and WOW, they are DELICIOUS! Just great! Yummy beef and fresh cristp lettuce, tomato, onion (all made to order, of course) We are fans of Pie n Burger and Continental Burger and the Hat burgers are easliy just as good. And CHEAP. The pastrami is $6.49, the single burger is $2.49. (you can also get a double burger- enormous). Try the onion rings too- so good!\r \r Pros: Value, taste, parking, friendly service Cons: Calories more

Great Sandwiches - Huge Portions 8/23/2007

High-end fast food, in a cheerful setting. And yeah, the Pastrami sandwiches are delicious, but so are the Chili Dogs, and the Roast Beef too...\r \r And if you order the Wet Fries, you better have some people with you to help finish eating the order -- they give you enough to feed four people (and that's no exaggeration).\r . Pros: Good food, great portions, fair prices Cons: You always eat too much, and need a nap afterwards! more

Great pastrami 5/31/2007

I'm not a big pastrami fan so when I first walkted into this restaurant, I wasn't expecting anything great. I tried the Pastrami dip and ever since then, I've been a fan. Absolutely great pastrami. Love how they dip the bread like a french dip sandwich before wrapping it up. Great portions of pastrami. 6.49 for a pastrami dip but the heaping amounts of fries are only $2-3.50 and it's good for about 3 people. Chili fries are pretty tasty as well. Great amounts of food. Gotta get the pastrami!!! Pros: Portions Cons: Pastrami was a bit pricey more

Brown bags of goodness 1/8/2007

Whether I'm sitting in or taking my order to-go, the brown sack served at The Hat can always brighten my day. The pastrami is superb. The chilli cheese fries are to die for. The turkey sandwiches are even noteworthy. All in all, this is a great lunch spot nestled in an almost forgotten section of Pasadena. Pros: Great food, quick service Cons: Tough parking at times more

Best Pastrami anywhere 9/8/2006

Everytime I visit California I must make atleast not one but two stops at The Hat because the Pastrami Dip is so good that I am not able to eat pastrami from anywhere else! Pros: simply the best pastrami more

best onion rings 8/15/2006

onion rings made properly and you get a liquor store paper bag full of them. can't here here too often or you get burned out and become sickened by the thought of eating their food. pastrami is wack; cheap greasy meat which is soaked up by the cheap bread and disentigrates. if you like their pastrami, you're never had real pastrami. go find an italian deli, i'd much rather go through the trouble of making my own than eat this greasy insult. can't comment on much else, just aviod the pastrami. Pros: onion rings, price to portion ratio Cons: pastrami more

Best partrami and chili fries around! 6/28/2006

I have been eating here since I was a kid. Always the same order too, a pastrami and chili cheese fries. I think I have eaten at just about every single The Hat there is in So. Cal! When the Glendora one opened and I went the people even recognized me from the Pasadena shop! Embarassing! \r \r I don't know about the rest of the items, but I do know that the portions are GI-NORMOUS! SO be warned! \r \r Pros: Pastrami, chili cheese fries, orange whip! Cons: sometimes there is a crowd more

Hugest portions I have ever seen!!! 7/6/2005

We are from out of town and had never been there before so we made the mistake of ordering way too much. I ordered the roast beef and chilli cheese fries and my husband ordered the pastrami, onion rings and potato salad. Well from this place you could stuff at least four people with just those items. I did not care for the roast beef but the pastrami was really good. The fries and onion rings come in portions so large you would think they messed up your order and gave you triple what you asked. We were truly stunned by how much food we had. The prices are amazing for how much you get. I thought the chilli was a bit bland and could've used salt but by the time I ate some I was so stuffed I just didn't bother. We would definatley go back again. Pros: price, quantity, free drink refills Cons: roast beef more

Best pastrimi! 3/9/2005

I cruised on down to the Hat this past Friday to finally see what the hooplah was all about. And I must say that the Hat has definetaly lived up to the praise. The pastrimi was thinly cut and contained minimal amounts of fat. It would've been even tastier if they had added more pickles. I also got a side order of wet fries after a recommendation from a co-worker. This unfortunately didn't turn out as good as the sandwich. The gravy tasted like mud. I had about a dozen or so, as did my chum. The serving was huge!!! I brought it back to my village of Eagle Rock to have my comrades finish it off. Pros: Pastrami Cons: Not enough pickles, Wet Fries more

The Ultimate Pastrami Sandwich 5/25/2003

I've been a pastrami lover most all of my life. I've searched high and low for good pastrami sandwiches in each local where I have lived or worked. I have to say without a doubt, The Hat is the ultimate classic pastrami sandwich served on a french roll with mustard and pickles, the old fashioned way. Yes there many good deli restaurants that offer great pastrami sandwiches deli style on rye bread with swiss cheese but for the old fashioned way, this is the place. Good lean, very flavorful well seasoned pastrami and a very generous amount for one sandwich. Their other food is good too but for Pastrami, this is it! Pros: Great Pastrami, Generous portions, several locations more

Plain ! 11/17/2002

The food was good, well I should say ok. The prices were ok about 5.80, but don't expect any thing fancy. This is no Jerry's Deli in ambiance, but then again the prices arent the same either. I guess the old adage is true, ""you get what you pay for"". more
