Fairview Southdale

I used the University of Minnesota Medical Center - Fairview in the last three years as an outpatient. I found the service was mediocre. I had a test showing a requirement for immediate attention, but neither the doctor or nurse contacted me. However, the clinic collected the lab test fee without hesitation and refused to refund. UMMC - Fairview charges more than other clinics for the same procedure, but gives a service level of no better quality. UMMC over- itemizes services in order to achieve higher revenue. One day after a procedure a nurse handed me a pill to take. The pill is normally given out free to patient after the procedure in other clinics; but it showed up in the bill as a $60 item (it actually costs less than 50 cents from Walgreens). UMMC expects a patient meeting a doctor in the packing lot because it always charges around $90 for the facility fee as the patient normally meets the doctor in an office. They did everything to make a stay as nice as you could have it for being in a hospital. Our Mom spent over a week there and had only good things to say about the place during her stay. Every staff member we spoke with treated us with respect and took any time needed to help us understand what was going on at all times. Also went over and above several times to keep us informed by calling us on their personal phones to update us on her condition when we were out of town. I could go on and on about all the things they did, but enough to say that if I,or anyone, ever needed to use Fairview Hospital would know they are in good hands. Pros: care, helpful, ask if need anything often, go over and above to make sure stay is as good as it can get Cons: pay for parking to visit ( but its a small fee, just had to think of something to put here !) more
