Brunch - FANTASTICO!!! 4/29/2006

I first tried El Guapo's brunch because I didn't feel like waiting in line at Soundbytes, which is next door. I am so glad I took a chance on El Guapo! Menu items I've tried are delicious and range from standards such as omlettes and breakfast burrittos to authentic ethnic foods such as fried plantains and chilaquiles (a very rare find in the US). Breakfast entree prices range from about $5-7. The biggest downside of an El Guapo brunch? Since no one seems to know about it, the place can feel deserted. However, I personally don't mind having half the restaurant to myself when I eat... it means immediate seating, no rush to finish eating, and great service. My biggest fear in writing a good review for El Guapo is that someday I'll need to wait in line to have breakfast there. Pros: Menu Choices, Price, Fast Seating Cons: Deserted more

Above and Beyond 11/14/2005

I went to El Guapo for the first time last week. After reading some reviews I decided to check it out. The one thing that shocked me was the service. I read some people say the service wasn't so great but I disagree. My Waitress was so sweet and knowledgable. I asked her about the meanings of some the spanish words and she knew everything!! I also was shocked when the manager came over and asked if everthing was okay. No where does that, especially when it's busy. I had the Shrimp Burrito and it was sooo good. A ton of food!! My husband had the Carne Asada and he loved it too. We both had the especial maragarita and were surprised at how smooth they were. I will be a regular here! Pros: Service!!, Food, Drinks Cons: Parking more

Great new find in Somerville 9/18/2005

My fiance and I went there for dinner one night. I expected really average burritos and fajitas but what I got was so much better. The dishes and the selection was superb. Lots of choices from a basic taco to more comlex dishes with mole sauce. You can do simple or fancy. Even the chips and salso that was included with our meal came with a delicious assortment of salsas to try. The sangria was also pretty delicious. Great place to go with friends and we though it was a little romantic. Definitely going back and it will become a regular place for us since we are tired of everything else right in Davis Square. Pros: location, selection, delicious food Cons: waitressnicebutsubpar more

Finally! 7/22/2005

I moved from Texas last year and have been miserable without decent Mexican food. El Guapo- finally! Free soda refills- unheard of here. Tri-color chips with three salsas. Our entrees were fresh and quick. My fajita was fabulous (ditto guacamole!); my fiance's enchiladas didn't look or taste as if they'd just come out from under a heat lamp, as so many do. The only bad things were the price of iced tea ($2.50- are you kidding?) and the noise level. When we arrived on a Saturday night the music on speakers was too loud, and once the (very good) guitar player began we weren't able to speak to each other for the rest of the meal. I hope the noise problem can be fixed, because great food is great, but you like to talk to your dinner partners! Overall, the absolute best Mexican I've found in the Boston area. Pros: food, free soda refills, value Cons: noise, slow service more

Come On In!! 6/28/2005

This past Friday night I had dinner with some of my friends at El Guapo and it was great! We had drinks at the bar before we were seated for a wonderful dinner. I had the Ranchero Filet and it was great. Cooked just the way I asked, medium rare. The especiale margarita I had was perfect, and might I add just enough alcohal to be able to enjoy a few of them. We also enjoyed the great sangria they had, which the server told us was great and we had to try it. The server was wonderful and very helpful with the menu and suggestions. The food was all out to the table in a timely manner, even with the resturant in full swing on a Friday night. Very enjoyable and definately recommend to all. Pros: food, drinks, servious more

Where's the tequila Margaritas 6/19/2005

If you are looking for a margarita with Tequila in it, don't go to El Guapo. The Margarita glasses are so small and filled with ice you could drink it in one gulp and if they are putting any Tequila in them, it can't bemore than a splash -- even on the most expensive versions. The food is average and the wait staff is obviously still learning the ropes. Very slow. Good bar area with TVs for watching sports but they need to improve their drinks before I would go back. more

Excellent wait staff, but food quality is lacking 6/10/2005

I went to El Guapo the other night and found it to have a very nice set-up and very attentive and helpful staff. However, the food took a while to come out after we ordered. We had the queso, which was quite good. We also had the seafood paella, which basically turned out to be a big pile of rice with some seafood tossed in (not particularly flavorful). I had the carne asada, which also included chorizo, an enchillada and rice and beans. The chorizo (sausage) was good, but the steak was really poor quality and was not particularly tasty. With the stuff I ordered above plus drinks (two beers & two margaritas) the bill came to $77 after a 20% tip. I thought that this was rather pricey for this type of restaurant and for the food quality... Pros: Service, Atmosphere Cons: Food, Price more

Has potential 6/9/2005

I found the quality of the food at El Guapo to be on-par with most other Mexican restaurants in the Boston area -- not stellar, but definitely passable. The margaritas were disappointingly small and weak for the price ($8+ each). They were served in 8-ounce glasses. The mix used, however, is quite tasty. The tri-colored chips and three salsas were also very good. Cons: value more
