Eagle Peak Shooting Range

I read the reviews for this range and nearly decided not to go. I'm glad I went. I recently moved here from a big state to the west of TX, and 2A rights are vanishing. I appreciate folks who take things seriously -- especially subjects that can be deadly. That being said, I don't deal with a$$holes very well. I may have been lucky, but the folks at the range were very professional and friendly today. \r \r When you operate a public range, you have no idea what sort of knucklehead may show up. We're using deadly weapons and failure to follow simple instructions is not acceptable. Today's range officer was a bald, heavy set guy with a serious demeanor. I've spent plenty of time on military ranges where a tower sniper will shoot you if you turn a weapon up range or any other potentially fatal act. During a cease fire you do not go near your station or weapon. You don't reload or anything similar. If I visited a range where the range master was allowing unsafe acts, I would leave immediately. Again, I did not witness any unprofessional behavior -- quite the opposite in fact. The bigger guy noticed I was regripping my left hand between rounds and brought it to my attention. \r \r Like anything else in life, you get out of it what you put into it. If you show up in a tank top and sandals, you may end up getting treated as a newbie. Follow the commands, follow the rules and you'll probably have a good time. Also, these guys are gun geeks, so asking them for tips and pointers may be beneficial. more

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY ANYONE WOULD PAY 10.00 TO BE VERBALY ABUSED BY A FAT SECURITY GAURD WANABE. I'm all about saftey but yelling at a shooter for putting his target on the wrong board was way out of line. The bad attitudes and rude behavior started as soon as you walked through the door for a membership. MY FIRST VISIT WAS MY LAST. I DO NOT RECCOMEND. more

As long as you follow the rules you won't have any problems here. It's as simple as that. I've been going here for about a year and I've had zero issues with anyone there. more

I get it. Guns are dangerous. Guns are deadly. Safety rules should and must be enforced at gun ranges. I have no problem with that. However, the staff at Eagle Peak, and especially the fat, abusive range officer seem to be proud of their attitude that injects anxiety into what should be an otherwise safe and enjoyable experience.\r \r I got yelled at for violating the posted rule prohibiting patrons from approaching the bench during a cease-fire time out. I acknowledged that I made a mistake and answered with a ""Roger That. Sorry."" Yet I had to endure another condescending 5-minute lecture as if I were a a five-year-old. Only a few minutes later during the next firing session, I see the same range officer cozy up to a man-woman couple next to me who were obviously firing a newly purchased 1911-style pistol for the first time. The range officer approached them and asked to see the weapon. He starts a long verbal essay about the manufacturer and model, sounding as if he was simply trying to impress them. As he held their weapon in his hand with his finger on the trigger, he asked them what caliber it was while simultaneously turning the barrel to his face so that he could visually guess the caliber. This is the very same guy who seemingly gets off on yelling and humiliating folks for the most minor infractions. What a moron. I won't be returning.\r \r I don't suggest that Eagle Peak relax their rules, but safety is not an excuse for the jack-assery that one has to endure at this place. more

This is by far the worst experience I've encountered in quite some time. Not only are the front desk personnel hostile, so are the range monitors. I was going to say their behavior was rude, but that word doesn't accurately describe these people. A**holes is a more fitting word. Condescending owners and employees infest this place. Don't waste your money here. There are many other rifle ranges around that understand the value of a customer. more

I don't recommend that you give this place your business. Besides the laundry list of range rules (you can't even load magazines or pick up a range bag during a cease fire) the range officers are just plain rude. I was told that I couldn't oil my gun on the line, that's right, no oiling. They also have that completely stupid no FMJ rifle ammo rule and they will be happy to sell you a 20 round box of trash steel case ammo for $11, the same stuff you can buy online and at Walmart for less than $5. Also, 16 years and younger are considered children and they have to be in direct supervision of an adult, so my 16 year old daughter who I know is ALOT smarter than those range officers couldn't even go to the bathroom without me. So if you don't want to waste you money and time and be treated like children, DON'T go here. more

I had been to this range years ago and returned this week. I was skeptical after reading a few of the reviews posted here and I detest mean people. I had to re join as my last visit must have been before the computer age. I gotta say these guys were BUTTERY NICE ! The customer service was among the best you can get in this day. I was shocked. The young guy helping me went out of his way to give me good attention and service. I was impressed with the range officer and the saftey protocol. The place was run over with kids and although I had to collar one that was wagging his rifle it was a good experience over all. more

I've been a member at this range for almost 2 years. I have read all the negative comments. I am ex-military and of all the ranges I have shot at in the greater Austin area I feel safest at Eagle's Peak. I realize that the guys operating the place are at times rough around the edges. Yes they yell at people, but most of the people being yelled at have usually violated one of the posted safety practices. These old guys have everyone's safety in mind. I have seen many an inexperienced shooter on this range. If people who shoot on this range think these guy are too tough they have no clue what it is to shoot on a military range. The rules will protect people and save their life. I have visited other ranges in the area and wasn't impressed with the gun safety. If you lack self discipline and don't appreciate shooting in a safe environment don't shoot here. These guys aren't always nice but they are safe. more

Never before have I seen on so many different levels the kind of poor, uncaring, and at times, abusive attitude displayed by each and every employee at Eagle Peak. It blows my mind to think that a business could succeed with this type of personnel. Now, don't think that I'm some greenhorn that decided to pull out my rifle for that yearly shooting session and got yelled at by an R.O. and got my feelings hurt. To the contrary, I've been to Eagle Peak many times just because it was the only range around that had halfway decent facilities in my area. I've spent countless dollars there and have always kept my mouth shut because I needed a place to shoot. Today, I brought my good friend to shoot along with my father. We were treated quite rudely by both people in the office and I decided I'd had enough. We decided to leave and never come back. There are now other ranges in our area that are far more pleasant to shoot at. I have been giving nearly all of my business to Texas shooting range in Liberty Hill which is close to my residence. I've always been greeted with a smile instead of a scowl and they have a better facility bar none. The days of behaving as if you are the only place in town are over....I can't help but think that Eagle Peaks days are numbered, especially as people realize that Texas Shooting Range has better facilities as well as a 1000 yard range, tactical bays and skeet/trap. Did I mention that you can shoot fmj rifle ammo at Texas Shooting Range? Happy trails, guys.... more

Well, it hasn't gotten any better. Same old cranky people, same old attitude.\r \r Recently had to take a class for renewing my CHL permit, the arrangements were made to do the shooting portion at Eagle Puke, I mean Eagle Peak.\r \r Got there close to when they opened, I admit they were slammed with lots of people a one very large group, but taking over 30 minutes to get through the line seems a bit crazy. To me the staff of three could have handled the situation a little better and speed up the process. I've got suggestions, but I know their mentality wouldn't consider a possible change.\r \r So, after finally paying the fees, having my range card taken, I was allowed entry to the range. Not more than a half a dozen steps, the screaming from the staff started to stow our weapons. I looked funny at him as the pistols were in the travel case and I really wasn't sure what to do because I was going to a different part of the range.\r \r After a brief exchange, ie. listening to more screaming, I finally got a chance to explain I was going to the area desinated for the CHL and didn't understand what he wanted me to do. His response, ""Oh, then go ahead"", no apology or anything.\r \r Don't get me wrong, I'm all for discipline and order at a gun range, I just believe there is a better way to communicate than yelling at your customers.\r \r If you can get over their attitude, it is a decent place to shoot but the location is their most attractive feature. more

Dec. 30, 2010, I took my 8 yr old son and 11 yr old daughter to have their first introduction to shooting. Having read some of the negative reviews, I, like MikeyG8181, was not sure what to expect. It was his review that told me to try it out. We were treated with respect and answered my questions with no attitude at all. They must have forgotten and left their ""old fart"" attitudes at home. There are rules, strict rules, resulting in my kids safety as well as everyone else. We felt totally safe in that environment. I suspect the reviews issued earlier were from someone with a personal axe to grind, or a complete idiot that has a general problem with rules and authority. Either way, this was a totally great experience, kids had a great time, and we will be back. Great job ""you old farts"". Keep the safety, good work, and fun going. If someone needs to be nipped for infractions of the safety rules, nip them hard. We will be back. more

So I've read the reviews here before I went and I was expecting the same experience that I get at EVERY shooting range (Red's, the outside range at Bertram (erased it's name from my memory)...Employeeys are a bunch of clickish prima donna jerks that are just waiting for world war 3 to pop off.\r \r I was pleasantly surprised when greeted by a reasonably pleasant older man behind the desk. I went through the video which was helpful to outline the range rules. This is something that every other place fails miserably at, and then treats you like a PETA member when you do something wrong.\r \r Anyway, I can say that I have never felt more safe at a range before...the officers are ON TOP of it. If you slip up...they will let you know about it. I consider this to be very acceptable when around firearms because you never know how safe the guy next to you REALLY is. Sure, no one likes to be called out for making a mistake, but around firearms, I am fine with that. \r \r Cease fires are often and well announced. Just like with anything in life, if you are polite and respectful to the folks working there, they will treat you the same in return.\r \r I am a fan and will always go back to Eagle Peak....and no where else.\r \r \r \r more

Okay, you first get there, the old fart greets you with a dirty attitude. He has the most evil look in his old wrinkly face, and makes you watch a first time 5 min rules video. The video is a bit confusing at times, but is okay since you just have to see it once. You come out and another nice(er) employee gives you paperwork and your card. I left my kid in the office while I went to get the shotgun and the ammo in the car, the old fart pushed my kid outside and yelled at me for not staying with him. I just said sorry and lowered my head with rage since I had already paid. \r \r The actual range was very nice, there were no officers that were watching you or bothering you, but still looking over you. When we left, we were surprised we were still alive as the old fart looked constipated when he said ""Come back again"":.\r \r The range is outstanding, but just beware the old fart(you'll know him when you see him) and follow all the rules very,very closelly if you want to have a good time. This is the most rude and unprofessional shooting range in the state of Texas. The employees are extremely rude on a regular basis . The best thing that could ever happen to this range is for them to be shut down !! Do not waste your time or money in experiencing the grossly over wieght range master getting in your face about any minor infraction that does not really matter. He weighs about three hundred pounds and likes to get right in your face. This business will not survive with the current employees. I went to meet a friend here and the elderly man working behind the counter was WAYY more into making sure his rifle was nice and shiny than he was making sure the customers had a good experience. He told me he checked his board for my friends name and didn't find it, when in fact he was there. So I ended up leaving thinking my friend wasn't there. What's worse about this is that these gentlemen will not learn from any of the online reviews or negative postings against them they read. They will instead insist that you are a ""liberal pussy"" who knows nothing about weapons and you are wasting their precious time. I got into it with one of the employees on an online forum and he made several degrading comments about my status as a US service member. These guys can not even handle the most simple tasks customers ask of them and in my eyes they do not deserve the privilege of operating a live weapon range. Do not take your children here, and visit this range at your own risk--it is not safe. Pros: You can sort of fire weapons here. Cons: Unsafe, incompetent, discourteous and pissed off staff. more

I have been shooting here for a couple of years ever since I got my first handgun. This is a great place, I take my 9 and 6 year old here. These guys are serious about the rules and the ONLY time I have ever seen them act rude is when someone gave them lip about the rules which are posted at every door and on every station(for those who didn't understand the verbal rundown). If you mess up, appologize don't back talk because it will be on then and it will be your fault. I like it that way, it lets me know I wont get shot on accident while hanging a target. When I forget to grab targets from the bench I ask the officer if he would mind getting them since it is a cease fire. they are always happy to do it. This place is great and probably the safest range I have ever been to. I spend hours there at a time. I buy reloading supplies there and other supplies when they have what I need. I still get corrected from time to time and it is truely for safety's sake. Go have fun and don't try to avoid the rules. Think of the officers as life guards and you'll have a great time. People seem to either love or hate Eagle Peak. I have taken at least 13 new people there and they all have had a great and safe time. I think people that don't have a good time are the one who question the ruled here. That does not fly at eagle peak. I knew from talking to many people in Austin that the employees at this business are a***holes, but I chose to see for myself. I am a NRA certified instructor and have been to over a thousand ranges around the country (both civilian and Military). I witnessed the employees of Eagle Peak verbally abuse customers who were asking range safety questions. There is no such things a stupid question, only stupid employees at Eagle Peak! The employees at eagle peak need an attitude adjustment or this business will fail. Yes it is a range and there are rules to follow. However, you can't explain away rude asinine behavior that these employees are famous for. Range safety is one thing, but being an a**hole to paying customers will only get your a** kicked when you leave for your car at the end of the day. This place will dry up as there are more outdoor ranges (with friendly staff who are willinig to answer questions about range rules) that are cheaper and closer to Austin opening up. Lone Star gun range has friendly staff and it's cheaper to shoot there. Do yourself a favor and let this business called Eagle Peak dry up and go away. How they survive, I will never understand. Every range has rules but this place is insane. We ignored the surly attitudes as we checked in. My guest realized he left his wallet in the car and sent his 15 year old boy to retrieve it. Immediately the manager started yelling about unsupervised minors. We were still inside the office!We packed up and left at once. Don't waste your time here unless you like being abused. Cons: Range Nazis more

Go to Eagle Peak knowing that they are providing you a rare service (in Austin), one where every single patron could harm you if they weren't practicing strict safety guidelines, and you'll realize exactly why these guys can so gruff. Guns aren't toys. I don't care who you are, places like this require every bit of what they offer. If they sense that you have no sense of humor, then you probably shouldn't be shooting around other people. Grow up, develop that spine, and be prepared to follow every order and take every ounce of ""abuse"" they dish. If you can't show good senses of humor and restraint at all times, I wouldn't want you shooting next to me. Pros: Excellent. An outdoor range!
